(Sigh.)

So, hey usagora! I've heard this really awesome song that I think you'll enjoy... it's called "Word Crimes", and just about 1:05 in is bound to be your favorite part!

I'm actually really into grammar and don't need to click your link to know exactly what you're talking about (because I've seen the video years ago), but I've never understood why people like you get so condescending when people make a simple, easy to make typo. I mean, if you want to nitpick, you should've put a comma after "hey", you should put a single space between the periods in ellipses, etc. So I guess we're even 🙄

My perfect iPhone:

Bezelless, notchless, Touch ID (with Face ID), USB-C, and yes, I would still like Dynamic Island.
Yep, although I would add, telescopic zoom/ prisms for all cams so no more camera bump!
If you want the ultimate icing on top of that, wireless OTA charging lie witricity or similar.

The notch was a defining design element —love it or hate it. The iPhone has to have a recognizable feature so that people know it’s an iPhone. Not a generic slab of screen.
Those that have an iPhone know they have an iPhone. Signalling it to others is just vanity. Besides what is recognisably Apple about design features that have literally changed multiple times in just a few years. Home Button > Notch > narrower Notch > Slot / Dynamic Island. Not to mention things like Flat Edge design which had fanboys demanding every product should follow so it all looked "uNiQuElY aPpLe".

No, it was introduced at a time where both iOS and Android phones were trying to ditch the bezels, the iPhone was not the first to do it either. Android manufacturers moved on and tries other things (drop-shaped or punch holes, even that ridiculous motorized pop-up selfie camera).

Despite making it slightly more narrow, the notch is ridiculously dated and should have been replaced with something else for a while now, but there wasn't anything better available in the iOS world - so bad they indirectly made the statement for the notch stronger by having a really dated design (the iPhone SE) remind you how bad bezels are and that the notch is a technical marvel when compared to them.
I hear this critique often, but I don't think it takes in to consideration the massive size of Apple's production pipeline. Apple is two years ahead in order to get hundreds of millions of devices produced. And the question isn't can we get rid of the notch, do cameras under displays, do TouchID under display, etc. it's can we do this over hundreds of millions of displays in full production. And how far back to we have to start buying and installing new equipment, scheduling process, other suppliers, vendors, etc. So any change you are seeing today is the result of two or more years of work. It's not possible at Apple's scale to just make sudden hardware changes.

Imagine a phone without a notch but with two front facing speakers? Wild concept, huh?

Sony somehow manages to do it.... while even adding a headphone jack, fingerprint scanner on the power button (the most logical place to put it) and a microSD card slot.

Dynamic Island should be the always on display, a part of the display that is always on and you can interact with. So when the phone is dark it always shows the time or countdown or an alert. Whatever is really important.

I would be happy if they designed a phone with a built in but replaceable case. Both sides made of glass? Gets scratched up in your pocket? Materials that are easy to slip off any uneven surface or your hand? There are better ways...that we will never get from Apple because they make too much on repairs, replacements and warranties.

If the Dynamic Island does come to the non-Pro 15 models next year, I would think that would mean that they’ll also be getting Pro Motion. I can’t imagine those animations looking too good on a 60Hz display.

Apple adheres to higher standards for sure, but Android manufacturers are quicker to turn around and try other solutions - even if it's to copy Apple, they do it and they do it quickly to not miss the bus.

I feel like Apple should be able to move a little faster, although I respect that they don't just go out and do whatever, they aim for fewer changes that work (rather than throw yourself in every direction hoping to find one that works).

They have the money for it, too.

Uh what?

That makes no sense. It's just a set of basic animations.

Many products have recognizable design elements and logos.

True, things change and their phones are recognizable via logs and design elements.
Not to mention things like Flat Edge design which had fanboys demanding every product should follow so it all looked "uNiQuElY aPpLe".
Not at all condescending.

I think they will continue to reserve Pro Motion for the pro level devices. They have not brought it to the non-pro iPads either and its been several years since it was released for iPad.

Yes ProMotion will likely be reserved for the Pro devices, but that is completely separate from Dynamic Island. There is no need at all for ProMotion to support Dynamic Island.

I agree with you, Dynamic Island will be across the board I am sure.

During the Dynamic Island intro, Joswiak does say that they've put the proximity sensor behind the display for the first time. So they're making inroads there. I'm sure the physical 'island' will shrink over the next few generations as they're able to put more and more behind the screen. However, i think the 'digital' island is a differentiator and is here to stay for a while!
When they'll make it a circle or much smaller hole, I will be in

Is there any real point to the tiny sliver of illuminated pixels above the pill cutout? Maybe just move the notch to the edge of the screen?
I wondered why there was the sliver of pixels until the keynote. That extra screen real estate is arguably necessary to make the Dynamic Island animation look good.

Alternatively, perhaps their miniaturization efforts also required them to move it down a bit, I dunno.

Look at the notch on the 13 and then at the pill just beneath it. Look how there's still room to the sides of "dynamic island." And there's still empty space above it. They could easily have used exactly the same thing on the iPhone 13. Why did they even mess with the notch size if they weren't going to do anything with the extra space?

I'm glad I got the last iPhone with a SIM slot in it for now, but the notch is actually one of the few negatives of the 13. It doesn't matter how wide it is when that space is still wasted, it matters how tall it is and it got worse in that way.
