The level of complaining here is unbearable. If the A11 cured cancer, people would complain why it doesn't cure AIDS.

The chip design team at Apple is nothing short of extraordinary. Snapdragon 835 is barely competitive with the A9, which is a 2 year old chip. The iPhone SE is faster than all Android flagships, think about that.

The A11 totally crushes anything from Qualcomm, it's not even close.

It’s all use case. The core question is how can does CPU power directly benefit me in my personal use.

What would be more valuable to me, Galaxy Note 8 style functionality on an A10 based iPhone or the A11 in an iPhone 8 as is?

I’d take note 8 style functionality.

I’m looking more forward to software enhancements than hardware. That’s just me though.
 
And my dad can beat up your dad. Has anyone stopped to wonder why on earth we need all this power in a friggin' cell phone?

And as powerful as iPhones are becoming, I would say the majority of average consumers don't utilize the full potential of the The processing power. Every year, the iPhone increasingly becomes more powerful with the A Series architecture . But then in retrospect, it doesn't translate into much difference for anybody to fully understand, because they don't exploit all the iPhones true power.
 
Poor Samsung ? How so ? .. How is iOS taking advantage of this super-speedy chip.. or even the A10/A10x ? Do explain..

Well FaceID and AR applications require fast processing. I'm sure there are a few other things that make use of the speed.

Everyone's use is different.

My personal use is I want the fastest phone possible because I hate lag.
 
But that’s the issue.. iOS and even most third party apps aren’t maximising the chip’s ability. What needs attention is, software..the hardware has already been quite advanced for a while now.

All that power and the home screen is still a grid of Apps..there are innovative ways to use power and Apple fails to realize that.
 
This is Apple we're talking about... I don't expect this to happen anytime soon but it's pretty safe bet I think that it's on the road, at least for (some?) of their laptops.

They would need to maintain that development for a market that caps at 5million total on a good day. Plus take over from intel the development of boards/chipsets for it. There is no 65million unit a quarter for them.

They would be in the same place IBM was with the PowerPC. And it was a financial disaster.
 
Why does that matter? I would rather have Apple push the boundaries of CPU performance than be complacent.

I don’t think you understand.. The relationship between hardware and software is something like this :

A system has 100 GB RAM and 6 core i7 processor, but the software only uses 10 GB Ram and 2 cores, at best!

Apple doesn't manufacture which would be a key weakness. They rely on suppliers which is their downfall.

I got into VainGlory recently and the performance is phenomenal on my iPad Pro.

I think you're against technology advancement. Who needs more than 128K RAM!?

EXACTLY. I look at my teenage daughter and all her friends with iPhones. An iPhone 5 processor is more than enough for anything they ever use it for.

And if someone is doing high end video editing on an iphone that actually leverages that power, I've got to ask why? Editing on a screen that small using just your fingers is so more inefficient than using a computer, that you're probably wasting infinitely more time than that 'fast' processor is saving you.

Yes, but it also makes intensive tasks faster. iPhones are expensive, it should have the fastest SoC possible.

Apple's advancement in SoC development is the reason why your daughter can use such an old iPhone. The A11 will last a very long time as well.
 
iOS is a subset of MacOS. They're not that far apart. Take the A11 chip, triple the amount of cores, up the speed significantly, and add in another GPU and you easily could have desktop class performance*. You have much more cooling to deal with and more power, so it's not a stretch. And while I am not a coder, I imagine that many apps could be ported from Intel to A11 with a click of a button in xcode.

They're not there yet, but could be with a desktop version of this chip. A11x? A11xx? 12 or 24 (6/6 - 12/12) cores + 12 GPU cores running at 3GHz with active cooling? Why not?

* Desktop as in Core i7/9

There's something very wrong with those benchmark figures. They are definately not comparable across ARM and x64. If they are, they are so limited and singlestreamed that it says nothing at all about the processors real capabilities when running average code on a single core.
There is no way in h*** it comes anywhere near the intel skylake 3.5Ghz in singlecore performance. These numbers suggest it's only about 10% slower in single core performance - completely unrealistic!

These benchmarks are based on the integration of the hardware and software. There is no way you can get that kind of result on a MacBook with an A11, because the OS is doing so much more. iOS and MacOS are not even close in terms of size and processor requirements just to get the dang thing running. I, for one, cannot wait for the day that my laptop is just a keyboard and screen and the phone is the brains. Those days are not here yet! And I'm not saying the A11 can't run MacOS, I am sure it can.. it just can't do it nearly as fast as an i series.
