I want to know what chip I have. I don't know why. It will not affect me at all. I love my 6S and it has been running great. But I just want to know....

But still too nervous to install an unknown app. And thats worse because now I have the means to know but won't let myself find out. =]

It's 14 nanometers vs. 16 nanometers and that referees to how far apart microscopic components of the chip are away from each other, not the dimensions of the chip.

Edit: The nanometre (International spelling as used by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures; SI symbol: nm) or nanometer (American spelling) is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one billionth of a metre ( 0.000000001 m)

That's kind of the point. All the news outlets have been assuming smaller chip size must mean smaller process node. In reality it is far more complex then that, especially since not all parts of the chips are 14/16/etc nanometers.

Yes, performance wise this has little impact on performance. But on battery life it does a lot, because a chip with a larger architecture generates more heat.

Not necessarily. There are many factors that determine power usage / heat generation. The layout could be different. The resistance of the different layers could be different. Larger may tend towards more power usage, but it isn't an absolute by any means.

I installed it just to see what all the rage was about. Got a Samsung chip on my 6s 64gb, not that it matters.... I do wonder if it matters what factory they came out of though, got a C9.

Isn't it the die that's a difference size (and thus density) rather than the chip. Surely the chip size is the same?

No matter how much Apple hates Samsung, they still heavily rely on them to manufacture their products.

Samsung is a big company. Apple hates the Samsung mobile division. Apple has very little opinion about Samsung refrigerators. Apple loves the Samsung semiconductor division. I am sure the Samsung semiconductor division is highly embarrased by the Samsung mobile division.

I can't in good conscience use a iPhone 6s with a Samsung manufactured A9

If Apple can build an iPhone 6s with a Samsung manufactured CPU, then why can you not buy it?

I can't believe that with the X Code debacle that just happened people are installing apps outside of the App Store on their phones just to find out which chip they have. You people deserve to be hacked.

I installed it but with the intention of doing a wipe right after (which I am doing right now). I am doing this because Apple support screwed up my Apple Music account (canceling it instead of iTunes Match) and that left me with a bunch of offline'd music I can't do anything with. No passwords entered, etc.

Honestly, even that wasn't really malicious software that went inside the operating system. It was software within apps, that opened up pop-ups asking for Apple ID passwords within an app. Outside of the app, it didn't work as it was sandboxed. Literally any app can create its own pop-ups, for what it's worth.

We do not recommend Macrumors readers install the app. Oh, and here's the link to the app....

Pretty stupid of MR to even write the article. Must be a slow day. But if your board here is a link to untested software. Lets us know what you think so our forums count will grow and maybe will have a new headliner tomorrow on how many phones were compromised.

Just your iCloud password with all those previous backups.

If I wasn't running iOS 9.1 Beta, I'd probably check it out then wipe it. It's just too much of a PITA to update back up to the Public Beta.

Anyone know what iOS API is being used to get the CPU identifier? Even if it's a private API, a developer could write a very simple open source app and upload it to github, where anyone with Xcode could run it.

if you are debating to get 6s or 6s Plus, this is another reason to get 6s plus. you will have better chance to get Samsugn chip with 6s Plus.
