Someone said jailbreaking has little risk.

So my question is going to seem very dumb and I apologize in advance.

I understand the benefits and want to try jailbreaking. I understand the names/terms. How do I jailbreak? What's the first step besides wiping my phone? ಠ_ಠ

I'm sure this gets asked every time there's a new jailbreak story, but what are some of the current benefits to jailbreaking?

The only one I think I'd be interested in is the quick-reply SMS feature that allows you to reply to a text without leaving an app. It'd be great if Apple implemented that, because I don't think I'm gonna bother jail breaking just for that.

But what else is there?

It enables you to download applications that won't be protected by Apples strict protection measures. It provides freedom to do risky things that Apple thinks are too risky that may compromise it's system and reputation.

It's pretty simple. You download Absinthe, click the program to unpack it, plug your iPad into your computer, go to the executable located in the unpacked folder, run it, click "Jailbreak", and wait.

The process itself is pretty smooth, but it isn't all easy sailing. I've jailbroken 3 times now, and I still don't have Cydia on my springboard. I'm probably missing some important step or something...

same here, although i suspect, like me, the jailbreak has failed.
the absinthe tool says at the end to re-try it.

I dont know if this has been asked here yet, but im on 5.0.1 and i jailbroke my ipad 2 the last time through the tethered way. Should I do upgrade, lose my jailbreak and jailbreak again? Is there any benefit to upgrading to 5.1?

Intelliscreenx man! It's seriously the best app ever. YouTube it

Apple needs to buy them out and inpliment it.

So clean

I haven't Jailbroken my iPhone since the 3G, maybe 3Gs.

What are the reasons to jailbreak now? You get the apps for free, you can tether 3G to your laptop/iPad right? Anything else new that's happened in the last couple years?

Back then I seem to remember it being an issue. Glitchy, and always worried about the new software updates. Then again those software updates always seemed to bring out new "features" in some sense.

Appreciate any update on the whole jailbreak experience.

Sbsettings, Callbar and Iblacklist are my reasons. Enough for me.

All of you download Zephyr in Cydia and you will never go back to stock iOS.

No need to ever again use the home button!

That's awesome, but in all fairness, the multitasking gestures in iOS 5 have taken care of that for months now. :)

I'm not sure how the jailbreak does it's thing, but if it has to go online to download all the important bits and pieces, then this might be the problem. The servers are swamped.

Whether that's the case or not, I'm gonna wait til later on tonight to try it again.

You can make your OS actually look not stupid. The OS is so archaic and boring, it's an eyesore.

that explains why mine doesn't complete successfully then.
it didn't mention that on the site with the download link though.....

mine goes thru the process and after reboot, sits and then says device recovered if you want to try jailbreaking again disconnect and reconnect.

Ya I had the problem with my iPhone and I restored and it worked. Right now that's the theory. I guess they haven't updated the site yet with the new info.

Not working

Ive been sitting at "Waiting for reboot" for over an hour, twice. I think its not working. iPad3

This jailbreak will not work if you updated to 5.1.1 OTA (wireless through the device) you must restore to 5.1.1 via iTunes first.

Thanks for the heads up, I was having trouble since I updated the device wirelessly..

Just download the software, back up your iPhone, wipe everything, then click jailbreak on the software, resync and upload your stuff from iTunes, and then enjoy Cydia :)

I wont be jailbreaking this time because all i really care about is Lockinfo. iOS every year takes away (very slowly i might add) reasons to jailbreak. Yes, intelliscreen, messages+, sbsettings are amazing, but I am just going to wait this one out. I am actually very happy with iOS 5 on my iPhone 4S :D
