What are the reasons to jailbreak now? You get the apps for free, you can tether 3G to your laptop/iPad right? Anything else new that's happened in the last couple years?

Most people I know don't jailbreak for free apps. And, by default, those aren't available - you have to go hunt for those repositories.

I have jailbroken my old iPod Touch and my iPhone 3GS for the extra functionality and flexibility. Apps that Apple rejected for silly reasons - those are in the default repo. Apps that bring functionality which may or may not eventually show up in iOS. For example, quick app switching was available on jailbroken devices before it was added to iOS.

Apps like SBSettings give you customizable one-touch access to toggle all your radios, your brightness, most anything. Activator gives you the ability to customize how you switch apps, go to the home screen, etc. I find it faster and simpler to just swipe the taskbar to go "home" rather than hit the home button (and, on my iPod Touch with its broken home button - it lets me continue to use the device!). Being able to customize your lockscreen is a big one for a lot of people.

In short: It's mainly about adding functionality, not about thievery.

I completely agree with you on that. I have bought countless apps on Cydia that are going to the hard working people who created them to bring choice and freedom to a great phone and OS. The people that assume jailbreaking is about stealing have never really jailbroken their device. A good app in Cydia can go from .99 cents to 15-20 bucks, but most are well worth the money :)

For me, the burning question is: How well (or how poorly) does the iPhone 3GS run with 5.1.1? I'm on 4.1 right now, and am mostly happy with it (thanks to Cydia) - but 5.x does add a few nice things like iCloud support.

What is fold to unlock?

Is that an expose for iPad?

its called "CardSwitcher" and shows all open apps next to each other and u can select whatever u want and this is "Fold to Unlock"

Wow, I gotta try that, just for those features:

Let's see:

Notifications. (ios does that)
Icons in the status bar (Press twice and that comes up in ios)
For weather I actually look outside
What is better multitasking?

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I do one thing at a time. Has served me well over the years.

It's really hard to swipe, point, drag and click with a finger and occasionally push the home button.

Damn Apple forces us to work out unnecessarily!

you sound like my grandma and i said notification WIDGETS and iOS DOES NOT support icons in the status bar for silent ringer etc by default. i also don't think looking outside the window will help u with the weather of another part of the country ;)

better multitasking involves expose like behavior

Anybody who says jailbreaking is "risky" or "illegal" has no clue what they're talking about. Pirating apps is illegal, but that's not the only reason to jailbreak your iDevice. Jailbreaking brings tremendous functionality to an already excellent piece of technology. There's no risk, only reward.

A few questions hopefully someone can answer:

I have an iPhone 4 running 5.0 unlocked with Gevey Ultra. (Not Ultra S)

Can I upgrade my iPhone 4 to 5.1.1 with absinthe, and unlock it with Gevey Ultra?

Can't seem to find this info anywhere. .. thanks

also, will Absinthe preserve my baseband? Do i need to? I have 4.10.01

iPad 3 + Quasar = OH MY GOD!!!!!!!

I actually played Infinity Blade II in 1/4 size window with 2 other apps on screen. It was smooth as silk. And FINALLY can have a video playing while using other apps.

For $10 it changes the whole iPad experience IMO. I feel like my mb air and iPad just got married. :)

The only reason I would have to JB is to unlock and there is no(not that I know of) unlock for the current base band.

I am NOT trying to get out of my contract with AT&T, all I want is to use my phone when I travel out of country.

Jailbroken and waiting for Cydia to get back on track :D

And I don't see why people still even ask for reasons to JB. If you need reasons then JB it yourself and go through the library of tweaks. I'm sure you'll find something, and you'll never go back to the bland stock experience. :)

worked for me?

This jailbreak will not work if you updated to 5.1.1 OTA (wireless through the device) you must restore to 5.1.1 via iTunes first.

Not true, I just did it.. Jailbreak is working perfectly. Also went against the devs and didn't do a full wipe after making a backup. Having no issues so far.

tried it 4 times and it never manages to jailbreak for me.
does the "restore" part, reboots, and then says it failed and iphone is still unjailbroken.
