Oops...

I made a backup - deleted everything (as it recommended)
I then jailbroke the phone and did a restore from itunes.

I then pressed cydia. It was preparing to load for the first time, but instead of loading properly my iphone rebooted.

My iphone loaded back up but I've lost the main apps - like store, messages, phone!

I have done another restore but it hasn't brought back the main apps.

Am I doing something stupid or have I buggered my phone?

Sorry if I appear to be a 'noob' but jailbreaking isn't something I do everyday.

Thank you in advance

----------

Also I am missing 'settings' to try to reset the homescreen.

----------

I've just found this: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/01/30/fix-white-missing-icons-iphone/

Though cydia is missing too!

Should I re-jailbreak the phone?

----------

can't re-jailbreak..

If i go to search I can find apps I have downloaded, songs, messages and contacts though no stock apps.

apparently apple released a revision of 5.1.1 for the iPhone 4 so be CAREFUL and make sure you download the "old" 5.1.1 from somewhere else and dont update through itunes from now on if u havent already

the new 5.1.1 built is (9B208) and won't work

I assume that mine is the newest version from itunes...

Is there anything I can do to fix this? My phone is pretty useless at the moment :(

go there http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

and chose the iPhone 4 - 5.1.1 (9B206) built. download it and restore to this file instead of what iTunes automatically does. so far its still working so u better hurry, apple might stop signing that firmware soon

Thank you. You've been most helpful. I have it downloading now. Here's to hoping it works!

So just to make sure. Once this firmware is installed I should be able to jailbreak it?

yep most likely, worked just fine on all my 3 iDevices.

1. update/restore to 5.1.1 (9B206)
2. set up your iPhone as new (from the device itself, just skip through all those set-ups on the iPhone until u reach the homescreen and have signal)
2.2 iTunes on your computer should show the "set up as new or from backup" screen, leave that be for now.
3. use absinthe to jailbreak your iPhone
- crossing fingers -
3.1 iPhone should boot back up and show the Cydia icon
4. go on itunes and chose "restore from backup" option

I haven't been able to get the jailbreak working for either my Verizon Iphone 4, or my Wifi Ipad 2. For both, I did a clean restore, first, without setting it up at all, then connecting it to Absinthe 2.0.1. It starts the jailbreak process, but gets stuck on waiting to reboot. Any suggestions?

You're a dude, thanks a lot!

Yeah, you just think you're cool. I'll show you what's REALLY cool...

This is what the iPad was made for. Some of you might go on and on about inter-connectivity, productivity, information at your fingertips. Whatever. All that matters is I can finally play Maniac Mansion on my iPad.

This is the future people...as I imagined it to be when I was 12 back in '92.

Day Of The Tentacle FTW! I'll be jailbreaking just for this. :)

Off topic Jailbreak Question....

Since the new jailbreak works for Apple TV2....
I used seasOnpass to jailbreak my Apple TV2 today. My goal is to be able to get Hulu plus and stream .avi to my ATV2.

How do I get Hulu on it? I purchaces aTV Flash and it solves the .avi issue but no Hulu....

Does Cyndia work on ATV2?

:apple:

I'm sure this gets asked every time there's a new jailbreak story, but what are some of the current benefits to jailbreaking?

The only one I think I'd be interested in is the quick-reply SMS feature that allows you to reply to a text without leaving an app. It'd be great if Apple implemented that, because I don't think I'm gonna bother jail breaking just for that.

But what else is there?

http://cydiablog.com/category/cydia-apps/

If these don't interest you, fine... but they do others. Some modify their Jeeps, some don't.

jail breaking is becoming obsolete. Why? because there are no benefits.

You know I get that many folks like yourself have no need to jailbreak, but what I don't understand is why users like you have this smug and superior attitude to folks that *do* want to Jailbreak? Many many people have shown the benefits of JB for themselves - just do a search on through the forums on this site alone. Yet, users like yourself give this attitude. Seriously... why?

Who made you the "king of iOS?"

Intelliscreen is good but...

Intelliscreenx man! It's seriously the best app ever. YouTube it

Apple needs to buy them out and inpliment it.

So clean

The application lets open and reply my Whatsapp messgs even though my phone is blocked. It only lets you read the mails and tweets, but for some reason gives full control of my phone with whatsapp. I dont know if i made my self clear...?

Not sure if it's just me or not but has anyone noticed on iPhone 4S 5.1.1, some cydia tweaks won't install such as intelliscreen x, sbsettings, and cydelete?

another jailbreak dummy question

ok, i bought springtomize, which is pretty awesome! but when i plugged my iPad back in iTunes said my my computer is not authorized for this device. is it safe to click yes? i'm not doing it till i hear some one say yes...lol

i hit yes and i just get stuck in a loop. i authorize it says ok, the says it's already authorized, then asks me to authorize again!! if i can never sync with my iMac then jail breaking was a very stupid move!

5. Tethering. Unlimited no charge tethering!! (no more paying more money to greedy carriers)

That's what interests me. I'd like to tether my iPad to my iPhone. Question: Do I need to jb both, or just the iPad?

I had iPhone 1 jb'd and really enjoyed the tweaks even back then. I'm excited to see what's been cooked up in the last 4-5 years!

You would jailbreak the iPhone, not the iPad. The point of the hack would be to make the iPhone able to share its connection via WiFi, without you needing to pay your carrier for the "privilege." The iPad would then connect to it as if it were a regular WiFi hotspot. Beware, however, that carriers like AT&T will detect unauthorized tethering by automatically analyzing user agent strings (and other details about the packets).

Day of the Tentacle comes next. But for now, I'm playing...(dramatic pause)...Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. :D

Also, does anyone have a good jailbroken task manager they can recommend me? I'm thinking about plunking down some change for a few UI enhancement apps, and I want to make sure I can easily kill off a few if I want to conserve my battery life.

I just viewed the 'Fold to Unlock' You Tube video. It seems to have no advantage over the normal unlock screen, what's the point?

It's just a visual effect that some people like. I'm with you on that; I don't install cosmetic tweaks.

Seeking advice

There appear to be some experienced jailbreakers here, so I would certainly appreciate your insight and advice. I've been a Mac user since 1984, but I hadn't jumped on the iOS bandwagon until I bought an iPad 3 this March. I've long read about jailbreaking, so I'm no stranger to its merits. But one of the main reasons I avoided jailbreaking my iPad date it's because I myself perceive jailbreaks to be "troublesome." No doubt experienced jailbreakers will disagree with this, but again, I'm not an experience jailbreaker myself. I am simply someone intrigued by jailbreaking and I want to explore if the good will outweigh the bad FOR ME.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but what I perceive "bad" to be is the rather troublesome process required to jailbreak. Yes I'm well aware that jailbreaking today is easier than it used to be. But the fact remains that it is still not classified as "hassle-free." Please let me explain.

From what I understand about jailbreaking, if I have a jailbroken iPad, whenever there's a new iOS update, I cannot immediately apply that iOS update unless I want to eliminate my jailbreak. In others words, i would need to wait until the next edition jailbreak comes out which allows me to jailbreak the latest iOS version. Right? Also, as many have reported concerning this latest untethered jailbreak, I would need to completely wipe my iPad, apply the jailbreak, then restore everything to my iPad. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but it would appear that I would need to repeat this process each and every time an iOS update comes out. Is this correct? That may not hassle other people but I perceive such to be a hassle for me. Even so I still cannot help but be strangely attracted to the freedom jail breaking offers.

So to repeat, the reason I struggle with the decision on whether or not to jailbreak my iPad is the fact that jailbreaking, at least in my mind, appears to involve a lot of perpetual hassle for people like me who like to stay current on the latest iOS updates. What are your thoughts and insights on this?

Thank you.

Break it down to the simplistics. Like, does iOS do everything you want it to do as is? Is having a goodly bit of flexibility and control over the OS, such as having access to the file system and a myriad options for better multitasking, sound like it'd be worth the hassle to you? Are you willing to put up with the occasional snags and weirdness that come with all this flexibility and control?

The best way I can describe it is that it makes the iPad feel a lot like a user friendly Linux distro, with all the pluses and minuses you usually come across while goofing around in Linux land. Hell, it's even got a terminal in there you can play with. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then yeah, go for it. Jailbreak like a straight up mofo.

But if you're find yourself satisfied with the more limited but ultimately stable experience the iPad offers straight out of the box, then...eh. It might not be for you.
