Yippee

Jailbroke my iPhone 4s over the weekend and its all working fine for me... no problems with iTunes Match, Wifi, Tethering... anything so far... The only thing I have noticed is the battery life seems less, but as I charge my phone overnight its not really an issue, and might all be in my head anyhoo...

Everytime I got to the part where I launched Absinthe, it just said "Please wait while we set some things up" and never went anywhere. VPN trick never worked. Restoring to my last backup now to try again.

App trasnsfer

After jailbreaking, what are some of the ways of getting apps on your device outside of purchasing through the app store? Are there any advantages/disadvantages of the methods? I only know of the following two...

1) Installous app (was extremely slow on iPad 2)
2) Using laptop/desktop, download from apptrackr and add via iTunes

1) Installous app (was extremely slow on iPad 2)

The reason for the slow speed of installs (if you refer to downloading) is due to the wifi implementation on your router, most routers it's fine..some it can be a complete biatch with when downloading files.

Solution, turn your mac into a hotspot.

Breaks Music Player

I ran the jailbreak absinthe but had to revert it because it broke the iPhone 4s music player. Videos and youtube still worked, but the music stopped.

Ahh, makes sense. Either way, thanks for letting me know. Seems like there's not a major drop in speed when you're tethering. Hopefully they improve the network there, I can only imagine how many people are on an iphone in different colleges right now.

No problem. I don't think there's much to improve, something was broken yesterday as my Speedtest were in the 700k range. They're over 1.5mbps now. The network is clearly in good shape, as it tests over 6000 when no one's here, but there's only two sites for 15,000 undergrads, and thousands more grads, staff, faculty, and associated people. AT&T doesn't even see the worst of it. Verizon has three sites, but they have a lot more customers up here.

One note though, is that there may not be any difference between tethering and the phone, I realized today that the environment I was testing in is extremely polluted in terms of wifi signals, and a router on 10mbit ethernet can only seem to pull 2mbps at best.

Good luck using that on AT&T. They caught me right away when my laptops on a trip. I won't illegally tether anymore because I don't to lose my unlimited data plan.

I don't care. I have the 2GB, worst that happens is I end up on the 3GB plan. I seem to think that they just don't care on the metered plans...

jailbreaking in _no_way_ effects battery life.

its just because its new, so you're playing with it more.

there is nothing in the process of jailbreaking that would in any way effect battery.

in fact, it actually indirectly fixed my battery issue, as i decided to do a clean restore first, with the newer build of 5.0.1, which actually fixed terrible battery issues i was having. before, i was not able to get to the afternoon with moderate usage (listening to music on the train and playing a non-3d intense game like solitaire)

now i've been going since 8:30am, its 12:30, i've been using my phone all morning at im at about 75%.

the likelihood of "bricking" an iphone by jailbreaking is 99.9999% impossible. the .0001% is in case your phone gets hit by lightning while you're doing it.

jailbreak applications however have the possibility to cause issues that would make you have to restore. just be diligent and don't install a zillion unnecessary things at a time with no way to trace back potential problems/issues.

I want to apologize in advance if I ask any stupid questions about jailbreaking. I want to jailbreak and I am on 5.0.1 with my 4s, but I just want to ask, what can't I do when I'm jailbroken? Obviously I can't update to a new firmware when it is released by Apple, but is there anything else I might do to "brick" the phone?

or don't be a scumbag and pirate apps.
people spend time making applications and charge a fee for them if they are something they invest our time in. i don't walk in to your mcdonalds and steal burgers from you, don't steal software from developers.

how do you not feel like a total scrumbag by asking this sort of question out in the public? do you just have no shame?

use the 3rd method. put in your paypal information and pay for the work someone is selling.

Apples policy is not to support jailbroken iPhones. Sometimes you might have a sympathetic genius who's still going to help you, but the official line is that it's unsupported.

Other times, the genius might not even be able to tell if the phone is jailbroken or not.

But whatever happens, it's impossible to "brick" your iPhone these days, there is always a way back down to unjailbroken iOS, in which case your warranty still holds.

Help!! I am very new to jailbreaking. Looks cool and I would love some new customizations. I haven't had any issues with my 4S so far besides the typical battery life that everyone else has. I want to jailbreak my phone but I'm worried if I do encounter any problems, my warranty will no longer be there and the store won't be able to do anything for me.
If I jailbreak and then restore it back to factory settings through Itunes can it be detected that it was ever jailbroken??

Helpp!!

Thanks!

No, it can't be detected if you restore it from DFU mode. Just restoring in iTunes can leave traces behind...

Let me guess, you live in a country with an oppressive, totalitarian leadership. You don't? On your iPhone you do.

----------

95% of all quoted statistics are BS.

Example time… In the USA, do they let you bring anything into the country? No.
Unjailbroken iPhone=Country with closed borders.

The stat was made up based on the amount of people I know pirate their iPhone apps…

Scumbag? I've spent over $150 in the app store since xmas and I currently have 2 apps I am "testing." If I like it I will buy it. Good luck...

I finally got the jailbreak to work, but I was having the same issues with iTunes Match mentioned above. I think I found a fix:

Go into Settings > Music and turn off iTunes Match.
Go into Settings > General > Usage and delete all your music and podcasts by swiping left across them.
Reboot.
Go into Settings > Music and turn iTunes Match back on (and the "show all" option as well)

Redownload desired music from the cloud.

there is nothing in any EULA/T&C/etc that allows for you to "well, im only gonna kinda pirate it.. i promise i'll delete it after."

it's still piracy.

In the case of downloading apps, not only is it a highly fair and equitable system, so you should support doing it the right way, but pirating also undermines the argument for legitimate reasons to Jailbreak (like buying software Apple don't allow).

I would have a huge problem pirating apps (especially when there are a ton of free ones), but I torrent music and TV shows all the time. The artists don't get anything anyways, the industry just sucks it up, and I already pay for the TV shows through my cable bill, I just want them in nice little AVI and MKV files with the commercials removed.

Reasons I jailbroke... High quailty youtube over 3g, facetime over 3g, 5 dock icons, MiWi, and to disable the sleep buttons hang up the call feature.

jailbreaking in _no_way_ effects battery life.

Although you're right, there is a problem inasmuch as people install all kinds of new things that use battery. Most of the things that require Winterboard (or its successor) to be installed are things that are going to cause battery to be used because of increased graphics usage, for example.

I jailbroke my iPad 2 perfectly but it fails every time I try my iPhone.

It always gets stuck at "Beginning jailbreak. This may take a while."

I have left it running for nearly 30 minutes with no change, it only took like a minute for my iPad.

Then after I force quit the app and try again, it always tells me that there was a problem and that it tries to fix it. But then I try jailbreaking after that only to be stuck in the same cycle.

Can anybody help?
