'Absinthe A5' Brings First Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2

I guess... I wonder if a fix will simply require a re-jailbreak or whether a full restore, then jailbreak will be necessary. Also, I wonder if iTunes is working fine for someone that doesn't have iTunes Match activated.

This only happens on the new jailbreak btw. My iPhone 4 (using redsn0w) doesn't have the same problem. Music player works perfectly fine.
 
Just did my 4S. All seems to be well so far. Moving onto my iPad next, so hopefully that goes well too.
 
Hey BiggAW, I have AT&T and am interested in what speed you get with tethering, have you tested wetehring with a laptop on speedtest.net yet?

I jailbreak for 2 reasons. Both of which should just be allowed. I do nothing illegal, I don't pirate software, I don't do it to avoid paying for tethering.

First, FaceTime over 3G. I travel a lot and use FaceTime to visit with my wife while away. Hotel wifi in the evening is generally unusable or to expensive to justify for a call.

Second, the ability to download items from apple over 20MB. It's my bandwidth, I pay for it. I fully support a warning before downloading large items. People should be aware that the textbook they just chose to download will consume 2GB of their plan, but that should be their choice.
 
iPad has an untethered JB, it was 4.3.3

This is not the first Untethered JB for the ipad2. The people who write these articles should spend more than 30 sec prepping for there 10 sec of fame! The first untethered JB for the iPad2 was 4.3.3

The network around here is not performing very well. I got about 1700 down on the laptop, and 2000 on the phone the other day, so the tethering performance was solid. Right now I'm not even hitting 1mbit on the phone. I'm in college, so everyone must have bought their new 4S'es and stuff back to school and slowed it down.
 
Okay, JB complete, everything seems fine. Any pointers on what I should install. I'm definitely going to give Bitesms a try, any other suggestions? Tethering app? Other must haves?
 
Actually, I'm not able to download anything from Cydia. None of the packages are available.....
 
Having been out of the jailbreak in scene since iOS 5, I clueless.

Is there an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 iPhone 4
 
I want to apologize in advance if I ask any stupid questions about jailbreaking. I want to jailbreak and I am on 5.0.1 with my 4s, but I just want to ask, what can't I do when I'm jailbroken? Obviously I can't update to a new firmware when it is released by Apple, but is there anything else I might do to "brick" the phone?
 
Wait, so with this jailbreak release, can I get 3g on my ipad 2 using my iphone 4s 3g connection? I thought I heard somewhere this is possible though it still costs money..though a one time fee.
 
I curious why this is news on MacRumors? Isn't jail breaking an Apple iOS device against the EULA? Seems like MR is sanctioning this by allowing discussion and essentially free advertising for a jail breaking program.

What's your point? It's not illegal, apple just doesn't like it. Kinda like eating sweets before dinner, your mom might get mad, but boo hoo.
 
I have Cydia installed now, but for anything i try to download, or re-download from my previous purchases (myWi, my3G, etc) I get a message saying it can't locate package. Cannot be found in your current sources. But these apps come from the default sources right? The 5 that I think are usually there show up in the Sources list. So what's going on?

Good luck using that on AT&T. They caught me right away when my laptops on a trip. I won't illegally tether anymore because I don't to lose my unlimited data plan.

Cydia is getting slammed right now. This isn't Apple's App Store, Cydia (and the sources used for files) simply can't handle so many people trying to download stuff at the same time.

I've been jailbroken almost constantly since the middle of 2010. I used MyWi every time I traveled to connect my laptop. AT&T has never once bothered me about it.

I believe AT&T is more concerned about excessive data use that seeing other things on your connection.

WHITE ICONS is the biggest issue I've seen with this jailbreak. Respringing is the only fix, and even that is temporary.

iBooks "works" as well as it did on previous 4.3.x/5.x jailbreaks. Books will open - but it still has image-decoding errors with DRM.

The book I test things with is the free "Winnie the Pooh" book that was given out free. It displayed corrupted images with both the Corona A4 and Absinthe A5 jailbreaks.

However, even with these DRM/image-decoding errors, iBooks may seem to work just fine for you.

Mine works fine too until I try to "stop" a download or play a few songs "in the cloud" (not on the device) in succession. Can you try that and report back?

I've tried everything. Still get the same issues. As long as I play nice and either download first to play or play something I already have on, there are no playback issues.

Just tried that on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Most of the images are fine but I did notice some that didn't load entirely. Is that what you're talking about?

At least the app opens though. I *need* iBooks. :D
 
All I know is that since I've updated to iOS5 my ipod touches wifi has not worked as before and response time is extremely slow, I can't wait for the chance to downgrade.

This. And unlocking the phone to use with alternate carriers. I buy my phones used and they are almost never factory unlocked. That is pretty much all I use.
 
Ahh, makes sense. Either way, thanks for letting me know. Seems like there's not a major drop in speed when you're tethering. Hopefully they improve the network there, I can only imagine how many people are on an iphone in different colleges right now.

I completely understand, I wouldn't want to lose an unlimited plan over tethering either. Were you using MyWi or PDANet? I'm going to assume that whichever one you were using also had the hide tethering option turned on as well.

No I needed to do a full restore for it to work.. It had nothing to do with the servers for me.
