I'm not being arrogant, so please try to help me understand why people jailbreak?

Besides being able to tether without dealing with your cell provider, I see that as a big positive but what else?

There are HUNDREDS of apps already available, no need to jailbreak.

Customizable? Doesn't really interest me, that's mostly a cosmetic thing.

What are the real benefits? Plus I hear more stories of people go back because they had more problems having the phone jailbroken.

Thanks
The reasons, benefits, and detractors for jailbreaking vary from person to person. The reasons I jailbreak are probably different than why a lot of other people jailbreak. It's up to you to find a reason YOU want to jailbreak, or some reason jailbreaking would benefit you.

There are also plenty of people out there who don't see any benefit to jailbreaking and so they don't. Sounds like you're in this category for now.

That said, my main reason for jailbreaking: My iDevices are MY devices, not Apple's. I want full access to MY devices. As a sys admin, I don't want [Apple] restricting what I can and cannot do with MY device. I'm totally OK with being unsupported by Apple when I do this and with the potential ramifications of glitches and bugs brought about by jailbreaking.

edit:
Oh, and adblocking, sbsettings, other tweaks that the devices are capable of but Apple doesn't want to support.

Yes, I see zero interest in those things except being able to tether without paying extra for it. That's about it. Even then I don't see the need to jailbreak. I guess I just wanted to make sure that was IT with regard to why people jailbreak.
Thanks

Well to be sure, everyone has their own reasons. Clearly none of them interest you so you probably aren't a good candidate for jailbreaking anyway.

Your question was kind of like asking why some people want AWD in a car when you personally don't have the need for it. Kind of answering your own question in a way.

The only remaining reason really is that people want to pirate things.

Really?

The only reason I jailbreak is for iBlacklist so I can control inbound texts and calls. And yes, I paid for the app! Not everyone is a pirate...

to the people that asked... why we jailbreak?
what do you mean why we jailbreak?

3G unrestrictor
Signal
SBSettings
iWep Pro (wifi cracker)

Apps Apple would never approve... I could care less for tweaks of course others have different reasons on why they do it, I think that covers your question now get the hell out of this thread don't hijack it... I'd hate to see this thread turn into a "why u no jailbreak" crap...

BiteSMS and 3G Unrestrictor for FaceTime calls. That's the only reason I jailbreak these days.

server seem to be down at the moment. I did jailbreak my device, but after clicking on the "jailbreak" icon it says "Error establishing a database connection". Well, we'll have to wait a little bit.

With this jailbreak, is there still any way to turn my 4S into a hotspot? I thought I ran across something in the past that mywi wasn't working anymore? I could be mistaken. I've still got the unlimited data with AT&T. Thanks!

Thank you, Dev Team!

The FIRST app I installed was Bitesms! Woot! I got my full license back!

It works - officially running jailbroke iPhone 4S

Enable VNP under setting

So if you restore your device after jailbreak do you get your warranty back? I don't want to void my 4S' warranty yet

Yes

I like to jailbreak for one simple reason: The feeling that I completely own my device.

Yeah, it's a principle thing. I'm a bit of an idealist. I don't pirate any software, but I install a bunch of tweaks like SBSettings and Retinapad. There's also some apps (mostly emulators) that I install, which are not on the app store because of Apple's "we rejected this app because it does some random trivial thing we don't like" policy.

Without a jailbreak, I'm 95% satisfied with my iOS devices. Jailbreak brings that to 99%. It's also fun to poke around the device in a UNIX shell and see how everything works. I'm a bit of an old-school geek so this stuff appeals to me.

There's my reason.

EDIT: That said, I AM waiting until next week to jailbreak my iPad because I want to make sure there's no "completely bricks the device in rare cases" bugs. :)

How do I jailbreak it ? Just download that link? plug in iPhone and done? How long does it take?

This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android? Im an iPhone user and i like it the way it is. if i wanted a jailbroken one, i would simply get a (cheapier) Android..

is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.

Because android still sucks. The only thing i jailbreak for is to enable tethering to my iPad. Got my phone unlocked when my o2 contract ended and changed to a different networks rolling contract plan which can't unlock the native tethering on the handset.

I'm looking to buy an unlocked iphone5 in the future and if tethering isn't enabled when i buy it i'll be waiting for a jailbreak for that.

More like because the owners of the games you emulate would sue apple if they allowed them.

a jailbroken iphone does not equal an android... you're keeping all the benefits of ios while getting rid of the cons. you're not changing operating systems, or ecosystem, you're just getting rid of its limitations.

i love my iphone and i'm invested into the ecosystem, but its not perfect and there are some things that irk me and jailbreaking gets rid of them!

for example...
no accessory splash (allows me to actually use my ipod controls while its connected to my car stereo)

3GUnrestrictor (tricks my phone into thinking its on wifi and allows me to download files larger than 20mb and do the other things that are wifi only)

location faker (i use it to watch in network games that are normally blacked out on the mlb atbat app)

navigate from maps (since natively everything defaults you to the maps app which doesn't offer navigation, this allows you the option from within maps to navigate with navigon, tom tom, etc without having to go into that app and enter all the info all over again)

those are probably my main reasons for jailbreaking. i use other things too but the above is what bothers me most about stock ios.

Try the tango app. Its better IMO you can make video calls to non apple phones as well which I like. I can also leave video messages. Since I've not had 3G unrestricter the last few months its been nice. Just my 2 cents
