The only remaining reason really is that people want to pirate things.

I don't pirate apps. I do it because I want some apps that aren't approved by apple and probably won't ever be approved by apple. I've bought some apps on cydia that I want to use. Why do you think everyone who jailbreaks wants to pirate apps?

I keep on getting.
“VPN Connection”
“A configuration error occurred”

:(

If you see an "Error establishing a database connection" error, go to Settings and turn on VPN, and wait instead. The VPN connection will give an error. This is normal. A reboot should happen a few moments after the error.

It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff.

You couldn't be any more wrong.

My main goal with jail breaking is just to unlock so I can use a local SIM when traveling. So, how do I unlock? Use this jailbreak and then what?

Unfortunately, to be able to unlock your phone you need to have a very specific combination of firmware and baseband, and be jailbroken.

Which phone do you have, which version of iOS are you running and which baseband is it?

Because they aren't actual companies bound by public expectations of branding, naming and such?

But those expectations are real regardless of whether or not they're actual companies, aren't they?

Do they want to attract the largest possible user base or not?

Their naming scheme seems targeted at 12 year old script kiddies. Hackers run Mozilla, and even they have the sense to name a product "Firefox" and not "F1r3f0x".

Because android still sucks. The only thing i jailbreak for is to enable tethering to my iPad. Got my phone unlocked when my o2 contract ended and changed to a different networks rolling contract plan which can't unlock the native tethering on the handset.

I'm looking to buy an unlocked iphone5 in the future and if tethering isn't enabled when i buy it i'll be waiting for a jailbreak for that.

More like because the owners of the games you emulate would sue apple if they allowed them.

This is a legitimate concern, but the solution is to just provide the emulator with no software, or a couple freeware titles. Then it's up to the user to add in games if they want. Apple distributes nothing copyrighted, so isn't liable.

They just don't want the competition from people running games in emulators instead of buying them in the store.

This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android? Im an iPhone user and i like it the way it is. if i wanted a jailbroken one, i would simply get a (cheapier) Android..

is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.

I can't speak for everyone, but I have a feeling a lot of people enjoy the thought of actually having complete control over how their iDevice works. Personally, I enjoy Themes and Icons... I think it adds a nice touch to making that iDevice a lil more personal.

I'll admit, I've pirated apps before, but ever since I found AppShopper in the AppStore, I dont pirate as much because with AppShopper, when you search for an App, and you like it - you can TRACK that App within AppShopper. AppShopper will tell you when the App Goes on Sale.. and gives you a nice bar Graph of the Apps changes (updates, price changes...etc)

Normally.. if you want long enough, the App you want will go on sale, or even Free!

Personally, I'm not a fan of Android... yet. I've only really used the older versions of the operating System, but I gotta admit, IceCreamSandwich looks amazing.. lots of bonus points there.

:) Nice question

4S
5.0.1 (9A405)
baseband = modem firmware? 1.0.13

Thanks

They can name it whatever they want... It's a little dorky but Oh well. But I do agree with the fact that a normal name might attract a larger audience. However then again the average person shouldn't jailbreak their devices due to the fact that many people wouldn't know how to fix things that can possibly go wrong during jail breaking

Do you click ok and wait for reboot? Or just leave it alone. Mine doesn't seem to reboot. Also should still have it plugged in?

Guys, why do you mark down everyone who asks 'why do you jailbreak'? It's a legit question to people who have never considered it or aren't as 'technical' as you.

The people who are getting marked down are saying ignorant things like this:

It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff.

Maybe next time you ask "why do you jailbreak?" you should avoid painting all jailbreakers as pirates. I understand it's your impression from what you've encountered, but hopefully you won't have this impression going forward.

I've already gone over this in my previous post, but to reiterate: I jailbreak and I have never pirated an iOS app and never will. Hell, I even buy apps from Cydia. All the people who I know who jailbreak are interested in additional functionality, not apps for free.

Well jailbreaking voids your warranty right? So I'm wondering if restoring after jailbreak will "get your warranty back". Did you really not understand the first time?

If you restore it back to stock, they can't tell it was ever Jailbroken. If they can't tell it was ever Jailbroken, then they don't know you voided your warranty...

My main goal with jail breaking is just to unlock so I can use a local SIM when traveling. So, how do I unlock? Use this jailbreak and then what?

There is no unlock as of now. You'd need to buy a factory unlocked iPhone if you're on AT&T. Verizon will unlock for international use, but T-Mobile or AT&T SIMs won't work.

It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff. I jailbroke my Apple TV a while ago with XBMC and the only benefit I could see is that it enabled you to view movies in other formats - i.e. movies which had probably been gotten by illegal means. The expense of this 'freedom' is that you have to either forfeit any official updates or rejailbrake every time you update the firmware.

You may be doing this because it give you a perception of freedom - if you want that get Android and Linux, that's not what Apple is about. Apple is a closed platform and works best when it remains so.

Honestly guys I really fail to see what you are trying to achieve other than piracy and when the next virus comes up that affects jailbroken devices don't complain.

there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking "why do you jailbreak" its' the false accusations that get the mark down. you would have been fine if you stopped with your first paragraph. if you fail to see why people jailbreak "aside from piracy" you are either walking around with your eyes shut or are illiterate. accusing everyone that jailbreaks of pirating apps is the equivelant of accusing everyone who listens to digital music of pirating it. and you don't need a jailbroken device to do that

just because ios hits your sweet spot doesn't mean everyone else is satisfied. we all like different things.

It's cool man, I have ill-informed opinions too. I just don't post them in threads full of people who ARE informed about the subjects, without reading ANY of the previous posts which already generously cover it for you, even though it's no ones responsibility to do so.

If you want to know why people jailbreak, try it and see. If NONE of the thousands of reasons installable in Cydia do anything for you, then simply hit restore. ...instead of making us explain it to you all over and over again.

In what cases does it void the warranty and not void it?

Apples policy is not to support jailbroken iPhones. Sometimes you might have a sympathetic genius who's still going to help you, but the official line is that it's unsupported.

Other times, the genius might not even be able to tell if the phone is jailbroken or not.

But whatever happens, it's impossible to "brick" your iPhone these days, there is always a way back down to unjailbroken iOS, in which case your warranty still holds.

I too have a jailbroke Apple TV and use XBMC. I'm surprised the only benefit you can see is to view movies obtained illegally. I for one have my entire DVD collection ripped and use multiple Apple TV's to view it. I don't do this to steal movies off the Internet, I do this because I hate dusty DVD cases taking up space. In addition having small kids my kids always seem to finger print and/or ruin their movies. I think this is a legitimate use. I don't sell these DVD's afterwards (which would be illegal if I kept soft copies). I pack the DVD's in those plastic containers you can buy from Walmart and put them in my storage unit. I know which movies are on which of my external HD's just in case I lose a drive and have to retrieve the box from storage to reload the movies.

There's legitimate reasons to jailbreak. For the record my iPhone isn't jailbroken mainly because I personally don't have a need at the moment to run apps that are not in the appstore.... but the moment I need to I won't hesitate. I was one of the few that was able to get the tether app downloaded before Apple yanked it... if I wasn't able to get it I'd likely be looking at jailbreaking. :) I can see the argument for "unlimited" plans having restrictions on tethering but since I PAY for a finite amount of data (2gb), I sleep very well at night knowing I can use MY 2GB the way I want to. I'm also paying more than my share because I have 3 devices I pay monthly for data. 2 iPHones and 1 ipad (the other iphone is my wife's and I don't think she's ever opened her browser on her phone let along tethered so she barely uses any of HER 2GB).

Mine didn't reboot until I re-entered Absinthe app on phone, then it crashed, rebooted and I had cydia.

So I've downloaded the new jailbreak tool but now every time I try to open it the tool just crashes and won't open... Not sure if I missed something and was supposed to download something else too or what...

Just jailbroken successfully, no problems at all (using the VPN fix).

In my case, it rebooted automatically...if it doesn't, I'd restart, tap the Absinthe icon, then go to VPN and see if that works.
