I have jailbroken before (for tethering reasons mostly and the 3G unrestrictor), but I have 1 question. In times past I have always had a little trouble restoring my phone from a back up. (Last time I just ended up restoring new which was a pain) Now that we have iCloud backups, does that mean that we can restore the phone from an iCloud backup without the need to pug it into the computer? Also, will that back up restore things like game progress? (I dont want to have to ulcock all of thoes Angry Birds levels again!)

Thanks!

Finally able to tether my Parrot Asteroid in the car ! :D
which tethering app do people recommend ?

The only remaining reason really is that people want to pirate things.

Not true. I want to JB almost exclusively for AutoSilent. The other utilities were nice but not needed. I haven't pirated one app.

Dear Apple Haters, please keep this thread on topic. Start your own "Why do people jailbreak? I don't get it? Why not just get an Android phone?" thread.

On that point, can the 4S be SIM unlocked after jailbreaking?

That would be my biggest reason for jailbreaking the 4S; unlocking it so I can use it as a world phone. (I blame AT&T for this, since they still refuse to unlock ANY iphone even after fulfilling the 2yr contract obligation). It is MY phone, all paid for, not AT&T's, yet they still manage to maintain lock.

Thanks to the jailbreaking/unlocking community, I was able to fully utilize my 3GS as a world phone without being tied down by AT&T. Hopefully, the 4S will be freed from their grasp soon.

On why jailbreak:

I've been an on-and-off jailbreaker since before the App Store existed, starting with the original iPhone.

First of all: I've never pirated an iOS app. Never have and never will. It's ok to do if you are doing it to evaluate software that doesn't have a demo/free version, but I don't even do it for that case.

iOS 5 is great, but there are a few things I'd like to tweak. For example, changing brightness is a pain with stock iOS and is something I do often; with a jailbreak there is a widget to toggle 20%/80% brightness from the notification screen (as well as a slider you can bring up). There's a bunch of other little things that I'd like to tweak, some of which may not even be possible with current jailbreak apps, but I'm a developer so I can try changing things myself. From what I understand MobileSubstrate works pretty well.

Should I have just gotten an Android phone instead? Maybe. I evaluated the Galaxy Nexus before getting an iPhone 4S, but ultimately I was unimpressed. Android has noticeable lag in all it's operations, even with ICS. The browser rendered things incorrectly often. Having the touch-screen Back/Home/App switcher buttons so close to where the keyboard pops up caused constant accidentally keypresses. I don't notice the 500ms audio lag, but I know it prevents certain types of music creation apps to be produced (I use music creation apps on my iPhone). Tons of little things. Galaxy Nexus's AMOLED screen was not as impressive as I thought it would be (especially if you lower the brightness below maximum). Maybe I would've felt different if I just bought the device and spent time using it. iOS simply has a faster UI, which I think is really important for the device I keep in my pocket. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe Android's flexibility would make up for it's laggy UI. I'm probably going to get an ICS-running Android device at some point, because I know Java well and it would be cool to hack on it. My coworker has a Galaxy Nexus, and so far I am glad I got the 4S. He is always complaining about something not working.

Interestingly, I heard from one of the jailbreak developers that iOS is easier to hack on the Android. MobileSubstrate makes it easy to do ad-hoc modifications, whereas with Android you have to recompile things which can be slow, especially if you don't have beefy hardware.

i like to jailbreak for one simple reason: The feeling that i completely own my device.

Yeah, it's a principle thing. I'm a bit of an idealist. I don't pirate any software, but i install a bunch of tweaks like sbsettings and retinapad. There's also some apps (mostly emulators) that i install, which are not on the app store because of apple's "we rejected this app because it does some random trivial thing we don't like" policy.

Without a jailbreak, i'm 95% satisfied with my ios devices. Jailbreak brings that to 99%. It's also fun to poke around the device in a unix shell and see how everything works. I'm a bit of an old-school geek so this stuff appeals to me.

There's my reason.

edit: That said, i am waiting until next week to jailbreak my ipad because i want to make sure there's no "completely bricks the device in rare cases" bugs. :)

LOL maybe I will wait as well

Yes, there are people who are Jailbreaking for legitimate and legal reasons. The ones who just pirate apps give Jailbreaking a bad name. Apps like MyWi are just the opposite- you have to buy them, but they are only on Jailbroken phones.

After a few attempts to load Absinthe and got the database error, it finally loaded, but all I saw were articles. Not sure what I am supposed to do. Now whey I click the absinthe icon, it goes to an all white screen with no text.

Someone try this:

Turn off your iPhone. Does it stay turned off? Mine reboots immediately. It can't stay off after being jailbroken. Weird

Let's see how quickly I get marked down for this one...

Guys, why do you mark down everyone who asks 'why do you jailbreak'? It's a legit question to people who have never considered it or aren't as 'technical' as you.

It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff. I jailbroke my Apple TV a while ago with XBMC and the only benefit I could see is that it enabled you to view movies in other formats - i.e. movies which had probably been gotten by illegal means. The expense of this 'freedom' is that you have to either forfeit any official updates or rejailbrake every time you update the firmware.

You may be doing this because it give you a perception of freedom - if you want that get Android and Linux, that's not what Apple is about. Apple is a closed platform and works best when it remains so.

Honestly guys I really fail to see what you are trying to achieve other than piracy and when the next virus comes up that affects jailbroken devices don't complain.

Unlock?

My main goal with jail breaking is just to unlock so I can use a local SIM when traveling. So, how do I unlock? Use this jailbreak and then what?
