Gizmo5 • Acrobits Softphone

I purchase Gizmo5 App in August 2010. Gizmo5 was scaled down version of Acrobits Softphone. I didn't need multiple SIP providers feature.

I purchased G.729 Annex A Codex in February 2011. Vacation in Puerto Rico the month of March 2011. Beginning April 2011 -> Gizmo5 is SHUTDOWN! Acrobits will NOT transfer In-App software purchase to Acrobits Softphone App nor issue a refund. :( Bad Customer Service!

G.729 Annex A Codex is licensed software but Acrobits doesn't treat it as such.

The issue could be codec related, but it could be other things as well. Could you do the following? In the Softphone, tap on settings, then preferences. Turn Log SIP Traffic on. Tap done, then restart the Softphone. Attempt to make a call over 3G. When it fails, go back to settings and tap on SIP Log. Tap on Send to Acrobits and include your name in the note. Then visit our help desk and create a ticket. In the ticket, describe the issue and note that you sent the log.

Here is our help desk.

I agree this stinks, but we don't have any control over this. We had no advance notice that Gizmo5 was closing shop and removed the App from the store when we became aware of it.

As far as the codec, it is licensed, but is not transferrable. Each new client or device requires a new license even if you are no longer using the previous client. But that's really just for information, Apple does not provide a way to transfer in app purchases even if the licensing for the codec allowed it.

Hi, I'm a long time user and a big fan of Acrobits. It's really the best VoIP client out there! Bravo and thanks alot!

I was wondering: do you know of any VoIP service providers (like the Betamax ones) that provide secure calls? This would prevent eavesdropping at the hotspot/3G/internet provider's side.

If you mean secure calls through SRTP/SDES, I don't know of any providers that offer this. It's usually only supported on PBXs, but any other users feel free to comment if you know one.

A lot of providers work with ZRTP (betamax, easycall.pl, Verse, NextGeVoip, 4T Group, callcentric). There are probably many more as well, you kind of have to test them. I'd say about 1 out of every 4 or 5 providers I've tested it with work with it to some extent. But it does need to be used in a controlled environment. It works only on SIP to SIP calls and the other device must support ZRTP as well. For the most part, these providers I only tested going between users on the same network (betamax to betamax, easycall to easycall, etc.) but there are probably some that support calling between networks as well. For example, callcentric I believe works with ZRTP for calls between callcentric accounts and calls to SIP addresses outside their network, but it doesn't work for incoming calls from other SIP providers. It's hard to give a complete list of providers that support it, since ZRTP isn't really 'supported' by any provider, it's designed to work within existing architecture.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this.

I was thinking about calling out to traditional phone lines. For this, ZRTP doesn't seem to work with voipbuster, poivy or easyvoip (all three betamax). I'm disconnected after 1 second.

That's right, ZRTP won't work for this. ZRTP is very secure, but can only be used in a controlled environment (VoIP to VoIP and both phones must support ZRTP). It relies on a key exchange with the other side which a traditional or mobile phone will not be able to do.

The only alternative is SRTP/SDES. But this is usually only available with PBXs. I suspect there might be a few SIP providers that support it, but I don't know any off hand. But then you have the possibility of 'man in the middle' attacks. IMO (and some may feel different), though you can use it other times, this is really only useful in a controlled environment as well (i.e. extension to extension or user to user on the same network). Once you make a call outside the network, you can't know for sure the whole route of the call is secure.

Problem with incoming calls

Hi

I have been using Softphone for a longer period of time now and I was not once able to hold a conversation with anybody who tried to call me. I tried both WiFi and 3G.

On my iPhone 3GS i have the 729 codec which is designed to work with 3G network however I have more luck making outbound calls then receiving them. It seems that after the call is established I cannot hear anything. When I made a call this morning I was able to hold a conversation but then 30 sec later when my fried was trying to call me back I could see an incoming call but when I pressed "answer" i could not hear anything. The signal strength was showing full bars and the right I could see "?/729G"

The funny part was - I was using the same service on my android phone before I got an iphone and it was working perfectly fine.

I will welcome any suggestions

I'm sorry you're having issues. I'd like to start by mentioning (both for your benefit and other forum readers) the limitations of G.729. It can help a lot with quality issues over 3G (since it take far less bandwidth than G.711 for example). But it is unlikely to solve issues with one way audio.

That said, problems with one way audio are one of the most common issues with SIP, especially on 3G (sometimes this is intentional on the 3G providers side, sometimes not). Sometimes they are quite simple to solve, sometimes they can be quite tough. We'll take a look at the issue on 3G as well, but let's see if we can get everything working properly over wifi first.

But before we start troubleshooting, let me ask an important question first.

Does the issue occur when you receive a call when Acrobits Softphone is open and in the foreground, or only when you receive a call through push notifications? Please test this on wifi first, if you haven't already.

P.S. The fact that it worked on your android device may be significant, but I've found in situations like this, it's better to start with no assumptions since they can often lead you in the wrong direction.

Is this same app like Skype?

Why is this better?

Hello,

Acrobits Softphone is quite different from Skype. Skype is a voip provider that provides their own proprietary software.

Acrobits Softphone is an open SIP Client, not a service provider. It does not work on its own. It will work with any VoIP provider that supports the SIP protocol. And the services SIP providers offer vary from a cheap way to make international calls to services capable of replacing your phone. So I would say it's definitely more versatile than Skype.

But it's not really a good comparison to compare it to Skype, they're very different. I like Skype and use it all the time for instant messaging and sometimes for video calls, but I wouldn't use it as one of my primary phone lines.

Unable to hear other party

Hi, I have an iPhone 2g.. When the app is open (in foreground), and someone calls me or I initiate a call, they can hear me but I can't hear them.

However if the app is closed (with push notification), when someone calls and I answer it, I am able to hear the other party.

What is the problem?

Thanks!

I'm sorry you're having an issue. Please try this. Go to the advanced settings of the SIP Account and add a STUN Server. Try stun.acrobits.cz if you don't know one. Try first with discover global ip set to internal, then set to external.

If you still have an issue, you should visit our help desk and open a ticket. We'll need to do some troubleshooting.

VoIP telephone

I have a phone connected to my live box, which rings at randomly. Sometimes once a day or in a week. If I pick it up, it's just dead line; if I leave it, it gives up after 4-5 rings or so. CLID just says 'out of area'. This is frustrating; does anyone have any hints for stopping it.
