So if Netflix wants to blame their revenue decline on password sharing, are they going to lower the price for subscribers not sharing the password?

That is, if Netflix wants to charge $2.99/month for each additional stream often used outside the household (e.g., college kids, friends), it would be only fair to lower the price of Netflix Standard and Netflix Premium by at least $2.99/month.
Agreed. I would even accept a $1.99 drop. The ridiculous thing about Netflix is that they force people into buying bundles of unrelated things, such as high definition and multiple streams, and then decide people are ripping them off if they try to use them.

I'm about to crackdown on that cancellation button. Treating paying customers like thieves is usually an activity relegated to AT&T. Good job, Netflix! You've almost completely shot yourself in the foot.

I'm somewhat surprised Netflix still has as many subscribers as it does. I dropped it years ago and haven't missed it. Not sure account sharing is their problem. Unsatisfactory content, senseless pricing tiers, and overall high prices seem to be more of a problem. Seems they're only addressing the high prices by considering putting in ads, which is something a lot of people switched to streaming to get away from.

I wonder how they plan to „crack down“ on account sharing. People do travel or might be away for work during the week or outside, watching on mobile data ??‍♂️

My guess is they track the IPs and/or MAC addresses of devices that connect and have created a baseline of where "home" is based on the most common IP range of connections.

Occasional connections from outside IPs will be tolerated since it will be presumed one is travelling or using a mobile device on another network. And if they track MACs, they can identify what are mobile devices.

But if you have significant connections from another IP range (the shared account) that will flag in their system.

I wonder what the average person spends in coffee shops per month as they whine about Netflix
A dash of reality, yes coffee prices have gone up a lot. Seriously no one says any particular streaming service is ideal. It pays to try out each service to see if it has value for you. But the subscription pricing and limited 4K or HDR/DV content varies with these streaming services. At this time there are too many of them, in time you will see some consolidation because no one needs all of them, gets too expensive.

The price was never an issue for me, I always used rarbgaccess.org. I loved the beginning of Netflix with great shows like House of Cards or Narcos or Daredevil or Marco Polo…but only season 1 & 2 were great! I didn’t mind the wokism but it just went too much & didn’t bring anything to the story. And then look at the end of shows like House of Cards, Punisher, Daredevil, Altered Carbon and the worst…Designed Survivor!

So you get great show only for 1 season, why?!

One show is although the exception: Ozark! Although the end is a bit disappointing I was expected much worst.

I still watch a fair bit on Netflix but their move into pretty much every genre of TV show has changed what I watch - I like their food shows, and they've added some wacky game shows, which I've enjoyed. And I'm quite jacked about their reboot of Iron Chef coming next month.

But compared to Disney/Apple/Prime Video, they are considerably overpriced.

They need to wade into the account sharing thing carefully, though. It's one thing to say they're going to crack down on freeloaders sharing a primary account. But all it will take is for Twitter to light up one day with reports of people's primary accounts being disabled due to the actions of freeloaders to cause enough backlash to make them rethink this. And I don't think primary account holders would stand for being asked regularly to somehow prove they are the primary account holder (i.e., two step verification on their phones when they open the app).

What makes Apple TV+ any better? It's the same thing as almost all the streaming services: either low quality content or not enough content. For Netflix, it's mostly the former and Apple mostly the latter (arguably both). At least Apple hasn't started raising prices... yet.
It's definitely better content. The list of Emmy awards does not lie.

Netflix’s business model is doomed at their price point.

It made sense when they had everyone else’s content, but they aren’t worth $20 when you also need to pay $5 for Parks & Rec on peacock, $5 for Star Trek on Paramount, $10 for the Sopranos on HBO, etc.

They didn’t evolve as the rest of the industry formed around them.
Hold on finnely somthing where we in scandinavia dion't get shafted, Netflix still have star trek here (not discovery, but that's bad trek anyway so who cares)

Counter opinion: I'd rather have one well-written, well-acted self-contained story in one season than a concept run into the ditch over multiple mediocre seasons.

I realize, however, that doesn't bring people into long-term or recurring subscriptions with streamers.

If someone buys a Premium plan for $19.99/month and shares the account with four other friends or households, each can end up only having to pay $5/month (half the price of a $9.99 basic plan) plus get HD and Ultra HD in the process.

Since not everyone in the same household wants to watch the same thing at the same time, Netflix gave customers the option to have multiple screens in use simultaneously for less than having to subscribe to multiple $9.99 accounts.

However, I do think they should've anticipated an account/password sharing issue.
Then they should include HD/4K in the single account just like every other Streaming Service. Do they expect everyone to sign up for the 4 user account just to get 4K, only to end up not using 3 of those? What a waste

I agree with your opinion but what I meant and didn’t clarify is I don’t mind if it’s 1 2 or 33 seasons like The Simpsons, it’s all about the story & an end. 2 shows I loved last year: Dopesick & & 1883 & The White Lotus. One season but great stories.

I don't subscribe to Netflix the entire year. I alternate which streaming services I use/pay for. There are way too many to keep up with. It doesn't make sense to pay for multiple services at the same time when you are barely watching one service over another. I may watch HBOMax for a few months, then cancel and watch Netflix and so on.

I'm always surprised that more people don't cycle through these streaming services month to month. It's easy enough. I have, at any given time, one of HBO, ATV+, NF, Hulu, or Prime. This month it's HBO. I've been catching up on tons of stuff. Enough good content to keep me busy. Tokyo Vice, Batman, Hacks, the cop show with Jon Bernthal I don't know the name of, etc. Next month it's Apple. Again, they've added enough interesting content in the last 4-5 months to keep me busy for 4 weeks. Severance, Pachinko, Slow Horses, and the david attenborough dino doc come to mind. Still cheaper and less hassle than cable. Yeah it's a bummer that there isn't a great one-stop shop for everything, but it's just the nature of the beast.

So they’re going to crack down on sharing. If they don’t get that right - absolutely spot-on right first time - then they’re going to upset more and more users who will resent what’s happening and vote with their feet. And then what? The only option will be to put up prices even more. That will trigger more departures. It’s a slippery slope. I’m already looking at my various streaming subscriptions to figure out which one will be next.

Just bought a 5TB portable HDD. Setting up Plex as we speak. Peace Netflix ✌️
Eventhough I have Netflix, I have everything on Plex as well. It's just a nicer, faster interface and playback is also much more reliable as well with quick access to local files via ethernet.

That is exactly what I do. I cycle through the various streaming services. There is always something to watch on them.

Netflix is circling the drain. I wouldn't advocate for an acquisition as it is, but I can see it becoming a bargain bin pickup for parts that Apple could keep as a separate brand like they do with Beats. A company of Apple's spending power could buy existing content for it, as a sort of repository of documentaries and older TV episodes and movies. Apple TV+ would remain focused on originals and high quality production. High value properties like Stranger Things, Squid Game and Black Mirror could move to Apple TV+.

Netflix might not be worth what they want people to pay for it, but the company's branding still has cachet.

Fair enough. Appreciate the clarification. And I agree with you on this as well.

Agree with the crackdown on account sharing.
You're getting downvoted for a legit reason. My family has 4 people. Parents at location A, sister also at location A but also B (during school) and me at location C. Are we suppose to get three accounts now?

FYI; gave you another downvote.
