I can't wait for this phone to be out to end this idiotic speculation.

Why would they fill in the breaks with liquidmetal if the purpose of the breaks is to prevent metal contact?

The bands will be plastic. Deal with it. The breaks in the iPhone 4/4s/5/5s are all plastic too. The home buttons were plastic. iPhone 4 even has a plastic gasket around BOTH pieces of glass!

It doesn't even look too much different from that iPhone 5 you all love so much, which you hated when it leaked.

As with every iPhone that has a new design, you'll bitch about things that don't matter, and then when you buy the phone, you'll realize that it's less about how it looks, and more about how it feels in the hand.

Everyone cried about the glass back on the iPhone 4, and how the iPhone 5 still has glass inlays that crack. Guess what, bitches? This new iPhone has no glass on the back! Isn't that what you asked for?

Everyone cried about iOS 6 being ugly with its realistic textures. Then they give you iOS 7. No more textures! Isn't that what you asked for?

Apparently any time Apple gives users what they ask for, those users don't like it. And then they get it, and love it.

Fuss, fuss, fuss. Either people have short-term memories or haven't been around long enough to know this outcry of design complaints happens each time we get leaked photos of a new iPhone. It's the same sticking points over and over (un-Apple, ugly, cheap, Jobs would never, Jony should be...)

Also, nobody can doubt that we know the final design. Many leaked parts from multiple sources all indicate the same look. This is it, folks. Apple is running at full production to get these things shipped in a month, OF COURSE the design has been finalized. Don't be silly in thinking that these are fake, pre-production concepts, prototypes, whatever. Fact is that these parts are coming down the assembly lines as we speak, and again, we've known what the past 4 iPhones have looked like well in advance, this one is no different.

I agree. This is most likely a pre-pre-production prototype from months ago when they were still playing with the external design. From the scratches and dents it looks as if it was thrown in a bin to be destroyed and never made it there.

For the lens, I think it would be smart for apple to have a protruding lens ring. They have several patents that cover adding external lenses and accessories. I have a stick on metal ring for external lenses and it actually prevents scratches on the rest of my 5S by elevating the back slightly and taking the majority of the stress and scratches.

I suspect that the plastic bands are one of two things,

1. An early prototype that will not be used or has since been modified
2. Will externally house some kind of antenna molded inside of the rubber inlay.

If the design is in fact real, it appears that a grove has been cut into the case. This would in no way stop the metal from conducting from one part of the phone to the other like the current 4-5S design does by physically isolating the sections electrically.

What if instead, the grove held an antenna wire encased in plastic to isolate it. This antenna could be either for the cellular/wifi or for some other tech like wireless charging or NFC. (yeah I hate to bring up those rumors but it is possible)

So either this is an early non-functioning prototype that was scrapped, or actual wires or antennas will be added to the plastic bands to provide a clear path for wireless signals.

I vote number 2. We've never seen any iPhone prototype leaks that differed significantly from the finished product. Early prototypes are produced on a smaller scale where leaks are much easier to prevent.

And while the straight lines do not electrically separate the back casing (something we already could guess since April from the Ukrainianiphone CAD renders), the top curved line parts do isolate the top and bottom aluminum parts of the iPhone from the main casing, which in the current models are used for the switchable cell antennas.

I also had the theory that antennas could be inserted inside the plastic lines, but from this picture it doesn't seem to be the case as the plastic seems to be filled.

There are gaps on the side which correspond to the antenna part below. Maybe the middle straight line part that is not over the gaps is just for cosmetic and structural reasons, as only filling out the antenna gaps with plastic would've looked even weirder.

No the purpose of the plastic is for signal to pass through, and they are separated in the same respect. You can't send radio signals through aluminum, hence the glass on the iPhone 5/5S. If they used Liquidmetal then they could make a MUCH MUCH smaller band with the only purpose of separating the antennas, probably so tiny you could barely see it. It would look far better than some of these purported leaks. Radio signals can pass through Liquidmetal and in fact Liquidmetal can act AS the antenna. The reason the Apple logo is going to be Liquidmetal on this iPhone is so signals can pass through it, and it is far better than plastic.

I'm not sure if this forum is full of actual mouth-breathers or just people pretending to be retards for fun.

You've all been in deep discussion over bits and pieces of a phone for months now, you'll believe and talk about anything. I thought this forum was supposed to somewhat know about Apple? Tim really did mean he'll double down I guess.

You're all gassing about rough manufacturing prototypes that got discarded and passed around months ago. Prototypes that likely look hardly anything like the actual coming phone but can at least can show how the actual phone handles the manufacture process to Apple. These prototypes have likely had design elements thrown in to try and make it look as far apart from the actual to-be-released phone as possible. Similar to when car manufactures test out cars and try to obscure their shape as much as possible.

Some of you honestly think that what you've seen over the past few months is a final, or even any stage of design of the real phone? Chinese knockoffs have more precision and sleekness than these prototypes.

Most people on this forum are likley 15 years old, or just incredibly stupid.

I don't understand this rant. You're calling people retards for believing this is how the final design will look? For the last two years we have had these leaks and the leaked parts always turn out to be the final design. So how do we not understand apple by thinking these are real?

Now Tim Cook and apple could really have doubled down but till it's proven I don't see how people are retarded for thinking these parts are legit.

Exactly.

For those wondering why the lens protrudes....

Since I like photography I'm actually exited to see what lens attachments they can come up with. High quality I hope :D

Does the 5th gen iPod touch rock when you put it on a flat surface because of the camera lense?

Yes, and my first thought was how horrible it was. However, when I got it, I found it too thin and slippery to use comfortably, so I bought a Griffin Reveal case. The case makes it a pleasure to hold, and the camera is recessed when the Touch is in the case. I haven't thought about it since.

Maybe the entire top and bottom of the phone (the rounded top and bottom ends) which don't appear attached and seem separated by the plastic, will be Liquidmetal and act as the antenna (assuming they can make it look identical in color to the rest of the device). You can see in this picture, the entire top and bottom are shown in a different color to represent the different parts or possibly even different materials as well.

As you can see, and you guys are right that mentioned it, the antenna would have to be inside that plastic because the aluminum is still attached to the top part. The only part that seems like it isn't attached to the other metal is the very top part, which seems separated by the band. Unless (as you mention) the antenna doesn't need to go across the middle where it is connected, and simply stops on those groves, and they simply continue the plastic across for aesthetic reasons, as it would look even worse to stop the bands in those groves and have solid aluminum across.

That's a patent, and most of their patents don't ever become reality.

Yes that's exactly why I'm calling them retards, well done. We both know there have been significantly less leaks, this isn't two years ago where I myself could probably walk into the assembly line area and take a picture.

I should have specified, I believe the overall shape will be similar, of course, I'm not even sure to say if there will even be a bigger phone at all.

All I do know is those god ugly band things on the rear will not be there or look anything like that. I also doubt a protruding camera.

I can't find any statement confirming that Liquidmetal is radio transparent. The only signal that passes through the glass of the iPhone 5/5s is WiFi, and the cell signals pass through the upper and lower portions of the metal housing, bordering the glass. Between these antennas and the main body is pieces of plastic.

Cellular iPads use plastic for radio transparency, and have a dedicated area for it at the top of the device, even when the Apple logo was plastic on them.

There is probably much less signal reach from the Apple logo area.

This iPhone 6 part has the same upper and lower segments that the 5 and 5s have, but no glass. That is why there's a thick plastic band, so that the radio antennas don't touch the housing and the metal inlays. With this iPhone 6 housing, the inlays and the top/bottom segments can be antennas for WiFi or Bluetooth. They wouldn't waste any space inside the device for antennas.

They've been engineering antennas to be part of the housing for 5 years.

Well only 3 weeks to go we'll find out if they really doubled down.Every year I get excited to see if the leaks are wrong. If this is the design it will grow on people like all the others.

Yikes!
I would hate my iPhone band to be peeling off like that. Not only does it look terrible, but a new attenagate may be brewing if that is representative of the wear and tear we can look forward to. And it is just not the most elegant of iPhone.

There could be a backlash at how low end and gaudy this iPhone looks compared to even the plastic 3gs.

You make me wanna facepalm.

To me, it looks like the top and bottom bits will have glass over them (just like the iPhone 5/5s) and the thickness of the glass will bring it flush with the camera lens. The iPhone 5/5s looks similar with lens sitting flush with the glass but would stick out a little with the glass removed.

I guess someone needs to turn the iPhone 6 shell sideways and show thickness measurements of the middle part and the top/bottom part - I bet you the top and bottom parts are slightly thinner to leave room for glass.

This is easy. Take a flat block of something and place two pennies on opposite corners. You'll discover that it would rock back and forth on either side of the axis between the two corners with the protrusion, since the other two corners aren't supported.

I highly question some people's intelligence and common sense, in this thread, if we really have to elaborate about basic knowledge like that.

also with protruding camera, phone will not lay flat

:apple:

It will lay flat if you put a case on it that is about the thickness of the camera protrusion  If the camera does indeed protrude (which looks to be more and more likely), and if I decide to buy one, that is the first thing I will do.

They don't peel, the people who took the pictures busted the plastic off because they specialize in reproducing these parts out of precious metals.

This has to be fake. No way Apple would put out a phone this ugly/amateur looking.

Just because you can't find it, doesn't make it so. Maybe refer here, to the inventor of it talking about it: http://www.cultofmac.com/54827/liquidmetal-inventor-exotic-alloy-may-make-new-iphone-antenna-exclusive/

The only signal that passes through those is Wifi huh? Can bluetooth pass through metal?

Cellular iPads use plastic section at the top for wifi? How do the non-cellular get wifi without that?

Actually I think they did it because I asked them to try it.

So Apple would intentionally make a device thin so it needs the lens to protrude, then the customer will have to buy a case that makes the phone thicker so it will lay flat.

Yeah ?
