I avoid Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop like the plague because they are too slow. If they ever get their act together one day and speed things up, I'll consider coming back.

I think the real issue is what one person said on the Adobe forums: it's confusing what the presenter said, sure. But why would they demonstrate a feature on stage in front of millions and not say "p.s. We may not actually go through with this one."

Something seems fishy here. Apple keynotes aren't some fly by night event where some rogue Adobe employee makes vague statements that might not be true as this adobe rep is now saying. I strongly expect that anything said in an apple keynote is reviewed on a high level by both apple and adobe. As ElRojito said, it was a large effort for Adobe to demonstrate this thing they supposedly have no interest in.

If this isn't a symptom of a high level fight between adobe and apple, it will cause one. Apple would certainly be pissed if they invited Adobe to speak at their keynote, Adobe promises to support Apple's newly implemented API only to have Adobe reneg a little while later. Indeed, Apple probably brought Adobe up there to say "look developers, we are doing this Metal thing, so should you!" What kind of message does that send to developers when Adobe then renegs?

Apple this is why you're supposed to keep Pro Apps going. Your competitors don't owe you their support, they basically don't want to hitch their product to your unique technologies.

When you killed Aperture you lost leverage

Final Cut Pro X should have been the first app showing Metal speed enhancements. Those who are serious about computing make their own hardware and software.

if the Mac or the iPhone / iPad can do the job itself, who's gonna spend on the display card to accelerate the process??

From a strategic standpoint, why doesn't Apple buy Adobe? They would then own the tech, could rejigger the teams/remove bad apples, and would insure that their hardware would have pro-level software to run in perpetuity. Seems like they are allowing a problem that vexed Steve Jobs for years to fester: letting the whims of another company impact the speed/power/utility of Apple's hardware (e.g. Flash). Why not lance this boil and move on already?

Adobe is firmly committed to performance because it accelerates creativity - Adobe is also firmly committed to the Mac platform. We share as much as we can about the directions we’re exploring and will continue to try and set realistic expectations about when specific advancements will come to market. When we demonstrated what was possible, we made a clear statement - which I repeat here: "Adobe is committed to bringing Metal to all of its Mac OS Creative Cloud applications, such as Illustrator and After Effects I showed you today, as well as Photoshop and Premiere Pro. We are very excited to see what Metal can do for our Creative Cloud users."

In an age where DX12 is Windows only, Metal is OS X/iOS only and Vulkan is cross-platform AND Linux I'd say bye-bye to both DX and Metal. Thank you AMD for kick-starting all this with Mantle.

Bull. Apple would have never brought them on stage if they didn't believe it was a done deal. Adobe changed their mind, but instead of admitting it, they say they never made the promise in the first place. If the engineer really misspoke, Adobe would have corrected it immediately.

Well this same message was also posted on Adobe's official forum. Things are definitely getting interesting...

The lack of meaningful updates and the actual removal of features moving to the latest After Effects (due to their new backend stuff) is why I've been learning Fusion. As soon as BMD releases the Studio version for OSX I'll be throwing money at it.

Of course AE is still the go to app for 2D motion graphics... I have yet to find a product that can replace it. Fusion can do a bunch of things, but many are just easier in AE. I'll be doing all my future comping in Fusion though.
