'bout time!

The App Store is way better than a box. Especially since it can be installed and updated easily thru iTunes, and on more than one Mac! Wish others would not be so hesitant.

Discounted? Amazon has Photoshop Elements 9 for Mac "discounted" as well, including the organizer and [gasp!] physical discs. I'd probably buy it from the app store if it was truly "discounted", but at this price only the ignorant or foolish would buy from the app store.

I don't see how, one key advantage of buying from the app store is that once purchased, apps can be legitimately installed on all of your macs ;)

Elements is too limited for many people. Adobe would make bucketloads of money if they would make an $80 photoshop lite instead of an $80 overly simplified grandma-aimed app. Just remove all the features that the pros really absolutely have to have, like color calibration systems, and sell this lite version for 80 to 100 dollars. That way adobe would convert all us pirates into paying customers without losing the massive amount of dough that they get from the actual imaging pros out there who are willing to pay $1000+ for the pro version of photoshop. Adobe would probably make boatloads of extra profit if they did this.

Have you actually used Elements? Just asking. To me it really is Photoshop lite, a good deal of the what the full app does but minus the stuff most normal people wouldn't use. Not that I'm saying Elements is perfect, it isn't, but I think people underestimate what you can do with it.

I think Elements is great for most average users, I've always found it weird how people position it as some kind of iPhoto competitor though - I use it more as an image manipulation / creation tool. Perhaps a lot of that is down to how Adobe have marketed it (the picture in the article being a prime example!). All I am saying is, in a variety of uses it's not often I come up against missing features that cause much of a problem.

As for the price - Well, compared to the full Photoshop, and considering how much of that you get for such a small fraction of the price, I think it's quite reasonable per se.

But even saying that, I bought my copy from Amazon just before Christmas for about £20 ($35ish) on a special offer. I hadn't been able to justify upgrading from the previous version until then.

And even though I have the physical edition, I've never used the organizer at all, so I don't know how much of a miss that is really.

The ultimate will be when Apple has 100% market share of everything on earth. Then we can all sit back and basque in the glory.

You must be kidding! 100% market share is worse than a monopoly. Unless you are an investor, why on earth would you want Apple to have all that power and be able to charge a premium for everything. Is it just because you adore the company so much? Or... perhaps, it's truly a (bad) joke?

I just got an email flyer from Roxio offering Toast Pro 11 for $99 that includes PSE in the bundle - much better deal.

If you were really an Apple fan, that is what you should want. We want all other companies to go out of business so that only Apple remains. We don't care how much it costs, we just want Apple to make trillions of dollars. Steve knows what is best for us. He is our leader. We worship him. If Steve says it, we believe it. If Steve makes it, we buy it and can't believe how we ever got along without it. We find ways to use it that make no sense at all, even if something else is easier and faster and cheaper. This is what Steve wants.

Looks like it's targeted at people who own cats. Seems professional enough!

Ah...Adobe.

The anti-Apple judas.

Boycott.

Say that to a professional photographer. If I have to choose, I'll choose Photoshop any day over any Apple product. I would be sad, I would miss it, but Photoshop earns me a living and I can run it on Windows (it actually runs slightly better).

Please don't make ignorant comments like this, some people depend on Adobe, thus they cannot be boycotted. I for one love Adobe for the amazing products they make, despite the annoying bugs and inconsistencies. No one's perfect, and that includes Apple. Adobe is the only company in the world that makes such professional applications (I'm not talking about this cat-photo app), and that is something worth admiring. Probably every single advert you see went through Photoshop.

Feeling the pressure...

Adobe had to release it.

I think they start to feel the pressure from Aperture's new pricing in the app store, as well as Photosynt on the app store. Next up is going to be Lightroom on the app store.

Sometimes you just have to give up to a great idea (the mac app store) because you risk, by not being available, to give up a lot of customers to the competition.

Competition is healthy. I still think Adobe is shy because by being bold (releasing full suite or other more professional programs) they would imply that they are now playing according to Apple's rules.

I think they should be bold and let customers decide. But corporations are managed by people. And people are human beings...

If you want "Elements, buy a Wacom tablet. Elements is bundled inside for "free" and the table is not much more than the price of Elements and you NEED a pen tablet to edit photos

Sorry I have to disagree. I have used both, much prefer the mouse. Some people like myself have shaky hands. A mouse keeps it in check as i can rest my arm correctly. For others a mouse may be a terrible option for editing. I could not live without one.

The last time I used it was like 3 to 5 years ago, so maybe they've improved it and added many more features, but the last time I used Adobe Element I found it to be sorely lacking a ton of features that I use to edit images.

Nice idea, too expensive

Separating the editor and putting it on the App Store for lower price ought to be a good idea. Only problem is that it's actually cheaper to buy the full product from Amazon (at least, in the UK).

If Steve told you to jump off a cliff would you do it?

This is way overpriced. The full elements can often be had for $50 after rebate. Sometimes even less.

They should offer this for $29.99.

Too true

If you want physical media, just create a disk image of the install package and burn

cool. I'd agree with that.

Do Apple really take 30% of every sale on the Mac App Store?

That's pretty insane.

Are you really serious???

You must be the iRobot.

At least LTD can sound intelligent often enough.

30% may seem like a high amount, but it does put your software in a easy to access realm with the Mac consumer. You will make more selling on the Mac App store than you will selling to a bundle distributor. Sometimes its less than pennies on the dollar with those.

You will not make as much however if you were selling from your own server I do not think.

Not a marketing, margin expert but have worked for middlemen. This is how it goes.

Adobe can say goodbye to their high priced junk on the App Store....

Hey Adobe.... It's Called Pixelmator a company who is getting closer to the same features found in your Bloated PoC software PS.

It's only $30 too.

You gotta do better then this Adobe.... but you won't and you'll be forced to strategize in a few years ....
