It's like saying that the Mac OS sucks for games. In reality the OS is fine, it's just that developers won't make as much money for their Mac version so they put far less time and effort into making them function as well as they do on Windows. Only a few companies, Blizzard in particular, put the same amount of time into their Mac versions, and it can be seen.

That's mostly true, but Microsoft provides a lot of tools and support for game developers using ActiveX, while apple does not have a similar program, so yes, apple is partly to blame for the lack of games on osx.

Apple, please get your collective thumb out of your collective ass and start doing what consumers pay you to do. Hell, 5% user base means nothing so Steve can wage his private war against Adobe on his own time. In a mean time real people need Flash so start delivering.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that flash is never going to die. Google is already massively supporting HTML5: http://www.youtube.com/html5

Once YouTube starts using HTML5 I think the switch will start to happen on more sites that use flash.

On the topic of the actual release, definitely slight performance boost but it was trash before so i'm still not impressed. So far i've noticed you can't scroll through flash videos anymore, you have to move your mouse cursor off of the flash object. I've also noticed that you have to now click inside the flash window to activate its controls which is annoying.

HTML 5 can't do P2P like flash can
HTML 5 can't dynamically create images or sounds and allow the user to save them to disk.
HTML 5 won't be out for a few more years.. Flash would have leaped frogged by then making HTML 5 look old.
HTML 5 is not a cross PLATFORM/DEVICE/BROWSER technology .. and it won't be for years.

flash is not going anywhere. flash is seen in small parts of almost every major organizations' websites.

sounds like a long-standing personal grudge Jobs has with Adobe.
Kiss and make up already. massive egos at work here, and Mac users get the result of that.

Flash is everywhere it needs to run well on OS X and the iPhone. Please Apple and Adobe work it out quickly.

Try http://www.originaltommys.com without flash. I was trying to find a location to get a great burger on a recent trip with my iPhone and it was very frustrating.

Which is why Flash needs to be defeated and succeeded by HTML 5. No single vendor should have such a stranglehold on the Web.

If there is one thing I would never ever in a million and one years do, is installing a beta version of Flash on my Mac.

Heck, I'd rather use a windows box for a year than put a beta version of that POS on my baby.

This seems strange as Open CL is free?
I don't know, but given that OS X clearly does expose APIs for GPU usage and the Windows support is limited to a few NVidia cards but whatever they're using apparently isn't available on Linux (unlike NVidia's own proprietary arbitrary code on GPU solution, CUDA), they're referring to the DRM features commonly associated with HDMI and other high definition interconnects.

Everything HTML 5 don't, Flash does.

Sorry it was too easy!

Honestly I wonder why I even post on this site. When did I EVER say that HTML5 could replace Flash tomorrow? Please quote me on this.

Seems to work as usual for Safari and Firefox.

I saw a decrease in CPU usage (not as dramatic as Flash 9 to Flash 10 unfortunately), but it is extremely unstable under Firefox. I had to uninstall it just to use my computer.

People need to understand Flash will never die out ... it's only getting more popular. EVERY company uses flash ... EVEN GOOGLE!!!

Apple and Apple Fan boys are the only ones BUTT-ACHING!!

So simply because Adobe has monopolized the internet in every way possible we should bow down to their poorly developed player?

Lack of programming interfaces to support it?

I don't understand Adobe sometimes. Being that they are the progenitors of flash (yes not exactly the correct use of that word), shouldn't they be responsible for that portion? In other words they rejected using OpenCL and GCD for a performance boost.

Regardless, It seems that tensions between Adobe and Apple are remaining elevated. It is sad that Adobe continues to leave Apple versions of their software slightly more crippled (in regards to performance) as compared to their PC equivalent.

Amen brother!

People like to be lazy, lack the discernment or simply don't have the brains to understand that a monopoly is never good.

Besides, the only times in which my web browsers crashed, either in windows, Linux or OS X, is when a heavy flash based application is launched.

Honestly? It is good as an "universal application", but then again it would be nice to run it outside browsers for example. It is kind of easy to use flash and put all the security and instability problems on someone else's shoulders.

Don't you mean adobe?

no apple

with a windows box i can upgrade my graphics driver anytime by going to nvidia's or ATI's website. with apple you have to wait until they release an OS update.

i bet Apple won't publish the API's that adobe needs to access the graphics hardware from OS X

I can't since I'm on a venerable PPC machine (Powermac G4 - still going strong!).

I still don't believe the hype. The same they have said about the 10.0 version - better performance bla bla bla - and here we go 450% on a Mac Freaking Pro. :D

I'm on a 3.06 early 09 iMac with an ATI Radeon 4850. Safari 64-bit with a 64-bit kernel.

Funny thing is I tried to upload it to Photobucket and Imageshack and neither of them worked. Guess that's another bug to chalk up to the list.

You mean ... because SOME developers don't know HOW to program for Flash!! GET IT RIGHT!

Look at sites like YouTube, Google, Yahoo, Last.FM, Pandora ... these are companies who pay great developers to create great performing flash applications.

It's not FLASH .. it's some of the people writing programs for flash.

On my hackintosh (Intel E2140 @ 2GHz, Geforce 8500GT and Leopard 10.5.8) I get these results:
Hack before update: 25.37fps average
Hack after update: 32.12fps average

With the latest flash on my iMac with 10.6.2 I only get 14fps average. :(

Does Apple in all it's Adobe hating glory not see the irony that one of the most Flash-heavy sites around is the Nike+ site(s) that form the interface for their Nike+/iPod/iPhone integration?

Great developers my ass:rolleyes:

Prior to this update my MacBook Pro would be maxing out its processor from simply watching a YouTube video.

Apple can't really be held responsible for Adobe's team of monkey coders for Mac OS X flash. H.264 aside, they have made an inferior app for Mac OS X for years now.

compared to Windows, OS X does suck for games. MS has DirectX which they have developed since the 1990's that makes developing games easy for Windows

Sounds like APPLE needs to step it's game up then .... because Flash runs perfectly on Linux and Windows
