Is it really wise to put their entire data system under one roof? Apple's fate is one fire/earthquake/Godzilla-attack away from being eliminated in one take.

When is the last time you heard of any major natural disaster in NC? I'm quite sure it's far enough inland that hurricanes are not a major concern. And I think it's high enough that flooding is not an issue either.. Seems like the perfect place.

Is it possible that this data center is required to suport the future Mac OS App Store?

Nope... this thing is massive. You don't need this many servers to support something like that.

Look at Valve/Steam... do they have a 1 billon $$ Data Center? They are serving multi GB files to millions daily.

Man, if I were google or MS I'd be really nervous about what Apple has up their sleeve.

MS along with google have a lot more data centers than apple

^ What about Godzilla?

Seriously, one incident could bring down the one facility and all of a sudden, Apple's entire data capacity is gone in one fell swoop.

Nobody can match this kind of data hosting ability on short notice.

well if you already have the land, and have the construction team in place, it may be easier and cheaper to expand it now rather than later.

Steve: Hey Mr. Construction Company Owner.. want another 600 Million? to build a second one?

CCO: Yup!!!

I assume if it's as successful as they hope they will build a 3rd/4th/5th in different parts of the country to reduce latency.

500,000 square feet? That's almost 3x the size of my local Walmart Supercenter. Imagine how many servers they can hold? And they want to double it!?

The company I work for has 2 Million Sq Ft of warehouse space. yeah.. you get lost in that place and need a golf cart to get around.

I live about 20 min south of where the data center is. We are too far inland for Hurricanes to be a concern, the weather is very calm here most of the time. The only threat the data center would face is the occasional Tornado which we do get a few of in the spring time.

But what about Godzilla?

xServes?

From what I understand, NetApp is Apple's go to company for data storage. NetApp also builds the most efficient data centers in the world. I would be surprised if NetApp and Apple weren't working on this thing together.

Did you mean xSAN? NetApp makes storage, xServe is a server. Two different devices.

Can you imagine how many Xserves that place can hold? Apple has got to be their own best customer.

can you imagine how many petabytes upon petabytes are in there.

They have a data center in California that is quite large. I would assume they have others as well.

Besides, have you not seen the hype about Time Machine? If anything goes wrong, all they have to do is to roll it back. At least this is what the ACEHM (Apple Consumer Electronics Hype Machine) tells me

Datacenter Expansion

I live 30 minutes or so away, and am familiar with some of the contractors involved in the project. The second phase of the datacenter was being scoped out quite a while back. AT&T just ran a dedicated fiber line across the street from my house that is headed directly to the facility. (from what I could gather from the techs burying the cable under people's driveways)

Well, they DID put it outside of missile range of Redmond Washington.

Don't forget hurricanes, probably the most likely in
NC.
