Same issue here with the same Pioneer receiver (VSX-821-K). I manually trained the Apple TV using the receiver remote. If I repeatedly press the volume up/down button on the Apple remote, it does eventually change the volume on the receiver one notch. Hopefully Apple can fix the issue with a software update.
Yeah I hope so too. What's weird is that when I try the CEC option it won't work at all, but the ATV will turn off and on the receiver.

No problems with an E-series Vizio TV. Trained the AppleTV by pointing the TV remote at the ATV and held the volume up/down as indicated in the training process. Then simply point the ATV remote at the TV and it controls the volume without issue.

For me, with my A/V receiver, it appears to work. I hold down the volume up and down and the line moves across and it says it's set up. But then it won't actually control the volume well at all. It's so intermittent. I tried fully charging the remote and even held the remote right next to the receiver and it just doesn't work well.

Is the Bluetooth remote actually sending the IR signal, or is the Apple TV working as an IR blaster?

That's been my question since when you hit the volume buttons, the led on the atv blinks, but the remote telling the atv you're hitting the volume buttons could be done over Bluetooth, not the atv receiving the ir signal.

I did some testing. My Siri remote will sporadically change the volume if I keep clicking the buttons. I tried moving the remote completely out of line-of-sight of the receiver and the ATV light still blinks but the volume never changed at all on the receiver. Move it back into line-of-sight and I can get occasional volume adjustments.

Sounds like my experience turning on the TV. Usually end up clicking 10 times before something happens.

I've trained the ATV for controlling the volume of my Pioneer amplifier several times, and it does not work in any reliable fashion.

I'm having the same problem. My receiver (Pioneer VSX 821-K) supposedly has CEC but that doesn't work.
When I put the ATV to sleep it DOES turn off the receiver but volume does nothing.

So I used my receiver remote to train the IR. The ATV remote will only adjust the volume if I click the button repeatedly. And only then sporadically.

Same issue for me with VSX-S300. Power on/off works fine but no volume control even when Siri remote learns the receiver remote signal which seems to be ok.

Anyone had luck with training the remote to control volume through the IR? I learned a new device for volume control but when I do to use it, doesn't change a thing. Using a Phillips receiver here. When I train it it is receiving the IR signal from the receivers original remote so I'm baffled.

Hope this helps & not trying to be repetitive. I personally own 4 of the new Apple tv4 & this has worked on all 4 with one being hooked up to a yamahah receiver, zvox speaker, & the other 2 are connected to bose speakers.

Go to settings:
Remotes & Devices:
Under Home Theater Control choose volume control
then choose learn new device.
After this you will notice a screen with a plus & minus sign.
The key is to place both remotes on a flat surface facing each
other.

Now press & hold the volume up button on your remote until the progress bar
goes all the way across the screen at which point the screen will change & then press
& hold the down volume button until the progress bar goes across the screen. This takes
a few seconds & works great for me.

Hmm, I'll give that a try. But I was always under the impression it was the Apple TV that received the ir signals not the remote (that's how it was on the previous gen), but I definetly give it a try. Thanks!

I believe the Apple TV is the IR blaster and the remote sends via Bluetooth to ATV. ATV also has an IR receiver - so you can use old remotes, or third part harmony etc remotes.

I think I can confirm that pointing the remotes at each other to program does nothing... tried it a few times. It only 'learned' the remote when I pointed it at the Apple TV. The remote does have an IR blaster (the TV only picks it up if I'm pointing at the TV)... I set the settings to be "TV via IR".

The IR blaster is in the remote. I confirmed this by training the Siri remote with a remote for a sound bar I have in another room. I then brought the trained Siri remote to the other room and pointed it at my sound bar and it controlled the volume just fine. The Apple TV does not have an IR blaster on the box, just the remote.

I wonder what's going on? Can you try pushing the volume up/down buttons repeatedly and see if it works sometimes? The IR signal should either be there or not. I don't get it.
Same here. If I press the volume up button 10 times, it goes trough maybe once - if I'm lucky. So sad :( (Pioneer VSX-323)

Same thing for me. But a new weird discovery. If i point my original remote at the TV while pressing the volume up/down on Siri remote then the volume control works (ish)

My idea is either
1. the signal comes from the actual apple tv (behind my tv) bounces off the original remote and back into sound bar.
2. The signal needs some kind of color filter. Infra red or UV and the original remote provides that filter.

I have samsung soundbar (audio via digital cable)

Need to find a fix for this. Its super annoying.

That's weird. For me, and others, it does work occasionally just not enough to be useful. I keep hoping an update can fix this. I can't imagine it's hardware related. We're just talking about blinking IR LEDs

The latest tvOS beta has an update for the remote to make it work with more receivers. Maybe someone who has the beta could confirm this.

"What's new in tvOS 9.2:

Remote - According to the release notes, there's a firmware update for the Apple TV Remote. It includes improved motion sensor performance and support for additional sound bar and receiver hardware."

When tvOS 9.2 is made public, be sure to check how to install remote firmware update, just in case it is not auto updated.

Has anyone tried this to see if it makes a difference?

The update didn't fix the issue for me, but it sounds like the remote gets automatically updated separately after the Apple TV.

Yeah, that's what I read but I'm at work now. I was wondering if anyone tried to update the remote.
