It worked on Pioneer VSX-521.

Had to update remote firmware separately to 0x0245.
Volume: Receiver via IR works.
Didn't have to Learn New Device

How did you force the update? When I went home for lunch I followed the procedure I found elsewhere (highlight the remote in settings and click the play button 4 times quickly). It bumped me back to the previous menu but there was no indication of anything updating.

It updated in the background after following that same procedure. I just put ATV4 to sleep and checked an hour later and the version had changed.

Has anyone tried this to see if it makes a difference?

Yep, it worked for me and my Samsung Soundbar. Previously I could not operate the volume control on the soundbar using the Apple Remote, but after the firmware update, I can.

After updating to tvOS 9.2, I checked the firmware for the remote and it was reading 0x0245. Good.

I had previously tried to set up the remote to work with my Samsung sound-bar, so I had a profile already set up, and it just started working. Totally awesome!!

If you are using a Samsung Soundbar, check your firmware guys, and then try your volume controls on the remote. If it doesn't work, go through the setup procedures here:

Control your TV or receiver with your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote - Apple Support

Well it didn't work for me. The volume for my Pioneer VSX-821-K still only works sporadically. I verified my remote was updated.

Very disappointing.

Be sure to try the setting...Receiver via IR. At first, I deleted all the prior custom settings and then tried "Learn New Device". Didn't work. Deleted the new custom. Then I set to "Receiver via IR", pointed remote at receiver and tried +/-. That worked.

Fingers crossed for success for you.

How do I do the remote firmware update ? I'm on the older firmware.

I've read the online guide, go into remotes/devices > bluetooth and my remote should appear in the list but it doesn't. If I go into remotes/devices > remote I can see I'm running 0x0241

Any tips on how to force the firmware update ?

Thanks. :)
[doublepost=1458720524][/doublepost]ok not to worry, I just kept pressing the play button loads of times and then suddenly my firmware became 0x0245 !
[doublepost=1458720655][/doublepost]and after all that, my Pioneer VSX-329k still doesn't work with the remote :( if I press the volume up/down many many times it might register for a second on the amp....

Doesn't work with learn new device...

Try ticking the setting "Receiver via IR"

Still no good for me. If I keep it as a learnt device and press the volume buttons several times, I might get the amp to show the volume and then maybe if I keep pressing enough times it might alter the volume by one number. Grrrrrrr

Do a restart on the ATV4, then retry.

I did delete all of my "custom" learnt device entries and had the amp turned on. Then ticked the "Receiver via IR". Pointed remote directly at receiver.

Upgraded remote to 0x0245, but still no luck here with my Pioneer VSX-821-K receiver. :(

Did you try the "Receiver via IR" setting? I have the same receiver and that's what worked for me. I deleted the Custom one I created and switched it to "Receiver via IR"

I'm not seeing that option. I wonder if it has to do with the way the receiver is connected to my TV or some other configuration issue?

Hmmm...I had it but I'm not sure how it got there. I've tried so many different things to get it to work.

When I did the IR learning process I had manually entered a description of "Receiver via IR". ;)

Settings -> Remotes and Devices -> Volume Control (last entry) -> Receiver via IR (from the List of Possibilities)
[doublepost=1458834857][/doublepost]Other Notes for Set Up:

Be sure to have the Receiver On during set up

If your ATV isn't directly connnected to your receiver (like HDMI switch, HDMI to Toslink, etc.) then temporarily make an HDMI direct connection from ATV to Receiver. After set up you should be able to change back.

Be sure to point remote directly at Receiver's IR sensor when using +/-.

I applied the OS update, updated the firmware of the Siri remote, deleted and retrained the ATV, and still the volume buttons on the Siri remote have no affect on my Pioneer VSX-520. Grrrr.

"retrained the ATV" = NO

For most Pioneer Receivers, there is no training, learn remote, etc. It won't work.

Pioneer Receiver (Master) Code is now in Apple ATV. Just follow my instructions above your post. The ATV sets the code automagically when the Receiver is connected to the ATV via HDMI. MOST Pioneer Receivers will work this way, but no guarantee on all.

Thanks worked like a charm!

I wonder why the Apple TV doesn't display the "Receiver via IR" option by default and just ask for your brand of receiver. It's a little frustrating since I assume this was the cause of the problem from the beginning, since I don't have my Apple TV connected with HDMI to my receiver.

Apple only seemingly added the Pioneer Code on the 9.2 update, so probably didn't work until this past Monday.

It is too bad that they don't explain the process so that users without direct HDMI connect of ATV to Receiver know how to do a workaround.

P.S. Way too many codes (not always by Manufacturer, sometimes device) to list, it's easier to program. Pioneer is one manufacturer which has used the same receiver code for at least the last five years...why it wasn't in original release is odd.
