Anyone who knows anything about these models isn't surprised. The industry is to blame for the scare and unrealistic expectations of this technology. Now it seems like it was a desperate ploy to grab what little cash VCs and other investors were offering to bet on gimmicks

I'm not surprised that a pattern recognition algorithm cannot really become intelligent. Pattern recognition is a big evolutionary advantage for humans but it is one of many different skills we developed along the evolutionary trajectory that got us here.
I'm convinced that trying to build AGI with silicon is essentially like trying to build a poor quality emulator of the human brain-- and an emulator is always going to be worse than a system running natively. There aren't enough researchers seriously considering the possiblity that the human brain is the evolutionary end-point for intelligence because intelligence actually requires our strange biochemical system to function.

Silicon Valley's belief that more computing power, data, and larger models will inevitably lead to better performance, and ultimately the holy grail – artificial general intelligence (AGI) – could be based on false assumptions

yep

No we won't.
I'll take that bet. I will bet $1000 a Tesla drives fully automatous on public city streets in the next 5 years. DM me and we can set it up. If you want 10K I will do that too since this is the safest bet ever. Again...Waymo already does this.

But before you bet you should watch these videos to get an idea of the current state of the tech:

AI has been the driving engine for Tesla for just about 10 months and the progress is already amazing. 5 years from now will be 2 more hardware upgrades. It actually finally realistically happening.

These tech bubbles are popping more quickly than ever. Maybe we should stop giving these jokers unlimited funds based on pie in the sky promises that never pan out. All they've achieved with is the theft of a vast store of human knowledge and in return they've degraded the internet with mountains of AI slop that is making life worse. Pull their funding and let them rot as the hucksters they are.

Can you please tell me legitimate use cases for everyday people to use AR? There is nothing I have seen from AR that would ever make me think this tech is really useful.

Don't give me commercial applications. I want everyday needs that my phone or watch can't already do 90% as well or better.

Also not trying to be an a$$ but everyone keeps talking about AR as the future but never gives any real world use cases. At least you can watch movies and play games with VR.
You set a really narrow window there. “Tell me all the legitimate uses after you remove the most obvious use cases” 😄 Why couldn’t a pair of smart glasses (that don’t look dorky) replace 90% of what you do on your phone now? Calendars, email, notifications, notes, calls, messages, etc.?

Driving down a dark road in the rain. Glasses silhouette a family of deer just off on the side of the road.

Oh man, I know that guy from somewhere, where do I know him from. (Looks up and to the right to see that’s John Wick.)

Assembling something at home; where does this piece go? (Looks down and to the left to see a 3D assembly model.)

Going to a sports game. Where is that new rookie everyone is talking about? He hasn’t been on the field yet. (Lens blinks yellow as rookie steps out on to the field.)

Dang it, missed that goal. (Blinks twice to get an instant replay. Blinks three times to get an instant replay from someone’s glasses at a different angle.)

I’m bored. (Looks up to the left to play a game.)

There’s a lot that can be done as good or better.

In 5 years I think it's reasonable to think we will, under some conditions. Like, maybe not in snowy areas.
So in other words it won’t Be able to drive us in 5 years. 😄

Have you guys actually used "AI" large language models? The models will constantly make things up instead of admitting they don't know something. For example, make up a name and ask who it is. "Who was Baron Fitzgerald Peabody?" All models will make up a complete fictional background. They aren't smart, and this isn't the future.

Taking their answers at face value and using them in real life will lead to some very awkward repercussions. I hope no one is using these for school or work.

People are using ChatGPT and Gemini for 90% of the work required for their college degrees as we speak, and they are getting straight A's. My brother is currently working on his MBA, and people have openly admitted this to him. Pretty sad, if you ask me.

And some use cases are just a nice demo but are useless. Like the “re write my message in a formal way”, really?, are we expected to use THAT?. How about a function that summarizes PDF sent to me in WhatsApp?. Or just make a useful Siri for making and sending calendar appointments????. And better keyboard.

I lost so many friends this year worst year of my life women hating me being single I been using the AI apps all the time for companionship. 😥😥

- You think a pair of Raybans are going to have long range infrared? 🤣 Cars with with much more powerful sensors are already doing this and can react faster than you. Mercedes has done it for years.

"Where do I know him from?"
- Yea 99.9% of people are opting out of allowing some random person from knowing their name.

"Assembly something at home"
- Could be kinda useful if I need hands free, went no where when the Halo lens did it. I could still just use my phone though. Done dozens of repairs at home by simply watching YouTube videos.

"Going to a sports game"
- Just google it! Watch the Jumbotron for the replay. If it's a big play, just go on Twitter and watch the replay during a commercial break.

"Im bored"
- pull my phone and play a game.

What's funny too is that you still need your phone to interact with the device. Or you were some stupid bracelet to maybe type in the air. I dunno man, you haven't convinced me. Again, 90% of what you said could be done by the phone and in some cases probably better with the phone. It's just not the future of tech.

I'm not betting, because I just don't care that much, and I don't gamble.

I stick to what I said.

Not quite sure what they’re expecting. It’s just glorified pattern-recognition software, and there are only so many ways to dress it up as ‘the next big thing’.
"just" is what people say, who are so afraid of the new technology that the not even try to understand, what's going on. It is the first time in history that a machine is able to handle human language. Just 5 years ago, even translation between major languages was really bad. Now the machines can not only translate, but comprehend the text so that the are able to to make a summary or transform the style.

To know all is not a feature of human intelligence. Some people tend to make up things, when they don't know the facts. So did LLMs do. One current hot topic on research is RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation). Machine learn to detect the limits of their knowledge and rather making something up, do some research on the internet.

Of cause, after this astonishing progress in AI, there is a slow-down until new research is done. Only using more and more hardware-power will not bring much progress.

Because people who don't wear glasses, generally don't want to wear glasses. I have to wear glasses for vision, and I dislike wearing glasses despite having done so for the past 8 years. This is part of the issue with wearable tech I feel. Personally I like having a feeling of separation from myself and the tech I'm using (which is why I don't think Vision Pro or its equivalents will ever fully take off). I could bet wrong of course!
