They need to be as light as a magazine. That is the holy grail.

Exactly which magazine? I can think of about 50 of them that weigh 2-3x what an Air weighs.

The OP is being ridiculous in sayings its not an issue for him. Its an issue for everyone...

Learn the difference between "issue" and "present". It may be present for everyone, but that doesn't mean it's an issue for everyone, or that everyone has the problem to the same degree.

Also maybe investigate the definition of ridiculous. The OP's post was calm and informative. Your's however...

There is no apple store in my town, but we have Media Markt which sells some Apple's products . I went there to test out the display models and all of them had the issie described, however I had to look for the exact spot to press until the issue beacame visible, witch quite some pressure to be honest. Now that must mean one thing, some Air 2's are obviously more susceptible.

I've ordered a 64 Gig Gold variant which should arrive in about 2 days, so I just hope that it is as "bad" as the display models in the store, as this means that I will probably not notice this problem much, if ever.

Here's a video I took in the store witch my iPhone 4s, it's camera is not as good as the newer iPhones but it was good enough to show that.

Air 2 Screen distoring when holding.

I went to best buy and checked out their display model. Even with the security tether which provides a lot of resistance, one handed holding (similar to my video) doesn't present the problem. There was a slight distortion a bit lower and closer to the edge of the lcd when I intentionally shook the iPad in my hand. I could get the other spots to show but that required more pressure that I would want to exert on my personal iPad.

I'll give Apple a call tomorrow and setup a return. Hopefully take 2 will work out better for me,

iFix photo gives some hint of the possible problem

Hi guys,

the internal photo of the ipad Air 2 suggests that the problem may come from the protruding chip, which points to the back of the LCD.

See the attached photo (from ifixit teardown).

If it makes you feel any better I have a 64 GB air 2 and have no issues

As I've mentioned in previous posts, deal with it or return.
All notebook computer screens exhibit the same issue... ;)
It is normal!!!
it is not normal for a device kept on a hand. and if the device is this "fragile", how on earth can you put it to a bag with other stuff without worrying possible damages? im concerned about carrying it in my bag and then there may be too much pressure damaging the screen because the backcover bends too much (too thin?) causing other parts touch the screen. what is too much a pressure? i dont know, and definitely not going to test it either...

I wonder if there is room to put something flat over the chips.

I think so, when you look at the ipad air (see attached), you can see it is pretty flat there (at the right edge). So it is obvious it may be the result of the new "thinner and lighter design".

I wonder if there is room to put something flat over the chips.

When Apple switches to OLED display this issue will be history along with backlight bleed, uniformity issues, bad pixel, etc. and it'll be thinner since there's no backlight layer.

I haven't found any issues when holding.

If you press strongly (and crazily), some marks appear. I don't see it as a problem.

Tried holding my Air 2 with one hand on the right side and I get the small blotch of distortion on the right middle only if I apply a lot of pressure on the back. And I mean an abnormal amount of pressure. My test was holding it with my thumb on the front and 2 fingers pushing on the back, and gently releasing my thumb grip so that all the pressure is coming from my fingers on the back. At that point I still don't see any distortion. The only time I get distortion is when I try to lift the iPad using the 2 fingers on the back, thumb still gently on the front side, like I'm trying to fling the iPad upward with my fingers on the back of it if that makes sense. Only then do I get the blotch at the right middle area of the screen. That is much more pressure than I'd ever apply in normal use and is pretty normal behavior for LCD screens. I think mine is just fine.

That's what I thought and what I tried as well. If you press abnormally hard, then the distortion spot will appear.

But then I try to hold using my right hand and walk so that the iPad wiggles. When the wiggling is pressing against my fingers at the back, the distortion spot appears. Just from simple pressure from wiggling. I thought this is small issue but then after I found out about that, I think that's quite a problem, guys.

So I tried the one they have at BestBuy today. Lo and behold, that one also has the distortion everybody is complaining about. There was also an Air 1 next to it, and there I could not reproduce the distortion.

However, I don't think it's a deal breaker. You have to press at a particular spot to get the distortion, and if you put a case on it the extra stiffness of the case will probably make it not an issue anymore.

I also checked out the vibrations from the speakers... that is definitely annoying and in my opinion worse than the distortion issue.

Just tried this and it doesn't cause distortion on mine. If I walk with a hop while doing that then I get a small spot of distortion. I can't say I spend my time hopping with iPad in one hand lol, so I really don't care if distortion appears while doing that. Appears that various units are more sensitive to pressure than others. If you have an otherwise perfect screen I wouldn't try to exchange for another unit. Not worth it to deal with possible dead pixels or other screen issues that may pop up in replacement units. I'd doubt Apple geniuses would even acknowledge this as an issue if you brought it in.

A case makes it worse in my experience.

Really... that's interesting. I would think that at really stiff case should help. But I still don't think it will be an issue for me. I am right handed, so I will mostly hold it in my left hand while using it.

Would be interesting though to know that this will not cause premature damage to the LCD screen while holding or transporting it. When I carry it in my backpack together with some laptops, it can get squeezed pretty good, and my iPad 2 never had an issue then.

I'm gonna keep mine. What else am I gonna do? Its an issue with all Air 2's. The vast majority of the time I'm holding it in landscape orientation and its either resting in my lap, on a flat surface or on my chest while lying down so I rarely hold in a position where I'm applying the pressure to make it happen. For me and the way I personally use its not a big deal to me.

Wonder if Apple will change anything in production due to this

Doubt it. At least when it comes to the Air 2 model. Apple's notorious for downplaying something like this. But I guarantee the problem won't be in the Air 3.
