You would think that Apple must incur costs taking these units back so often. It seems fairly rampant too with many people exchanging them for various reasons. What I'm getting at is wouldn't it end up possibly cheaper in the long run to just do better product testing ahead of time?

Nearly 50% of the sale price is pure profit for Apple. Unless 50% of the people who buy an Air 2 return it (and I doubt the actual number is anywhere close to 1%), Apple will still make tons of money on the iPad Air 2.

Not to mention they are minting money with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus so they can afford a few hits on the iPad.

Maybe so. But there still have to be additional costs they have to eat to deal with the return process. You're right though, they are printing money anyways so what is a few million in return fees? Guess that's why the quality is hit or miss and device to device variation is higher than ever. It just doesn't matter.

What I'm getting at is wouldn't it end up possibly cheaper in the long run to just do better product testing ahead of time? Sure, I'm a software quality engineer by trade so my opinions are jaded. Even so, it would seem that this screen issue and vibration issue should have been caught way back.

Both could have been fixed prior to launch and then there would have been WAY fewer returns and less complaints. Oh well.

Just take a look around these forums or even the first few pages of this thread, there are millions of Apple fans who will put up with defects just because it's Apple and they will go as far as denying any issues whatsoever. That's a huge amount of people giving Apple money without questioning them at all and with the mark up Apple have no reason to change.

I do wonder though if next year we will see more improvements to the actual product rather than just thinner and lighter, I've seen a lot more comments by the media about "It's thin enough" than I did with the Air 1.

It really does fluctuate from device to device which is weird. The display ,odel I tired at Best Buy a few weeks ago didn't have much of this screen distortion but it vibrated like a Mexican jumping bean with any appreciable volume level. I type while music is ON and I dont care for head phones so that alone killed the deal for me.

Other people report minimal vibrations but if you even look at the device the wrong way it shows that LCD distortion issue.

The quality diffences from unit to unit are not what I'd expect from Apple. Still love their tablets and my Air has been great but I expect it's more of a dice roll now as tow there you get one with issues or without. That's somewhat disappointing.

you mind describing mexican jumping bean? :p

by the way my air 2 does this lcd distortion next to the apple logo but only if I press hard

No distortion here after a week

I've had my Air 2 for just over a week. Out of the box I tested for this: if I pressed hard towards the bottom it was slightly visible but now I can't get it to happen at all. Not that I spend a lot of time pressing hard on the back of my iPad. :). The screen really is beautiful! Coming from an iPad 2, it's a massive improvement in every category.

Glad ya like it. No doubt it's a HUGE update coming from an iPad 2. :D

Has anyone ordered a new unit online? I ask this because maybe Apple has fixed the problem of the distortion spots by now? Maybe not…

I wouldn't count on it. It seems to be a by product of the incredible thinness. There will always be some variance in mfg but overall, they'll all do it to some extent.

I don't think there will be any fix, since it doesn't seem to be a real issue.
The iPad air 2 is just a light and thin device, and within production tolerances maybe there are units that are just a little bit "too thin".

I couldn't reproduce the issue on any of the displayed unit of my nearest Apple Store, unless I don't deliberately press hard on the back.
But I would return a unit that show the issue just by keeping in my hand.

Not on the 5 units I've tested so far.
I'm going to check another Apple store next week

Not according to my experience so far...

Then you are not holding them properly to get the distortion.

THEY ALL DO IT.

Some according to this thread do it more, mine does and so did everyone at the apple store.

Is it a bad problem, not at all to me.

Again. Not according to my experience.
Surely if you actually PRESS on it, you can reproduce the issue even on my air 1. But not just keeping in your hand, on the 5 units I tested.

no way. air 1 can not be compared to air2 - all air 2 units distort screen, and high portion of all air2 distorts screen just while tapping right part of display... personally tested approx 20 units, all do distort applying slight pressure on back (no way air 1 does that with that amount of pressure).. and more than 10 had issue with just tapping screen on right side... except that apple store near you must be magical;)

It’s not an “issue”, it’s a problem. All of the iPad Air 2 units exhibit this problem. Some Air 2’s show the distortion easily with light to moderate pressure, while others show the distortion with medium pressure. It is indeed a real problem.

Like I said, they all do it when holding (or applying slight pressure) in the right spot, You obviously DO NOT KNOW WHERE THAT IS.

I suspect there is some variance and more importantly, a variance in what one considers a reasonable amount of pressure to apply. I know exactly what spot it is, and I can get mine to do it slightly if I press or squeeze considerably harder than I would consider reasonable. In normal use its not anything I would EVER notice, and I would bet the same would be true of 99+% of the regular population. It's a trade-off for making the device so thin and light, and in my opinion, one well worth it. There are PLENTY of thicker tablets out there for you to chose from if you decide this bothers you.

Where did you come from??
Most importantly why would you quote me when I posted this below?

WOW people are just amazing these days.

Next time take your time before you post.

Like I said in a post before on this same page,

I think you need to step back and relax. Your bolded sentence is anything but clear (I take it English might not be your first language?)

You said they all do it when holding it in the right spot. I'm telling you that mine doesn't, and I've been following and participating in this thread from the beginning.

Just wow!!

Obviously you know more than all of us that went to apple store's and verified ALL air 2's have the issue, including myself.

OK, to all that think the screen distortion is there, zhenya says you are all making this up and english is not your first language.

Lol, mine doesn't do it at all...I hold it all the time and press...never seen it period...you need to actually check ALL IPads :D and I have pressed really hard...maybe I'm lucky...it is the wifi lte T-Mobile model

i have tested this at 4 different apple stores ,futureshop, staples,BestBuy,walmart,Costco, etc.. Every single one had the distortion issue. Some needed more pressure, some less, but they all did it.

I have personally had 4 units in my home that had the issue. Does it bother me ?no ,because in real world use it doesn`t affect me personally but i can understand how some people would be bothered by it.

Apple will find a way to reinforce the body to flex less in the "AIR 3" for sure.

My Air 2 I received yesterday distorts in one spot if I apply pressure in the just the right spot. During normal use, picking it up, holding one handed, etc. it is perfectly fine.
