Well I'm on my third device now.... Only the first one had the shadowy area on the left. The second and now third have had the color issue with the yellowing on the left in portrait. I'm returning this third one tonight and will try the retina mini when it's released. Hopefully it won't have the same issues. :(

Sigh... I got my 2nd and it is the same as just about everybody else on this thread - two tone screen. Not as bad as my first, but even my wife noticed it without me pointing it out. I was on the phone to Apple support AGAIN last night for an hour of futility. It took them one hour to tell me to take it into an Apple store. I've had a nightmare with Applecare this time to be honest and feel etremely frustrated with the whole process.

I have a question. I want to swap this one over for a new one. Can I just go to the the Apple store without a genius bar reservation as the Apple store in my city is booked out until next thursday and that's too long to wait. I bought it from Apple online store. So I think I'm just going to get them to pick it up and give me a new one again, although they may not do it again as they may want to actually "see" the issue before giving me a new one.... sigh...

Having seen a grand total of five iPads (not including store demo models), each had an issue. Most prominent was the yellow tint on the left in portrait. Some had ugly pink/green tints as well. Just seems like you either put up with it or return it.

Funny thing is I checked my dad's iPad 3. What do you know - horrible yellowish/greenish tint running up and down the right side.

Do you have eyesight or reading comprehension problems? Did you not see the two CAMERA photos I posted after the screen shots? You have an issue with someone trying to calm people down, so maybe you need to get over that. There are people looking at this thread, and then asking "What should I look for to know if I have a problem?" That's my problem with this thread, although I don't doubt some people are having real issues.

I'll skip snide comments, and display the sort of manners you should have learned. ;)

Kid, you embarrassed yourself with a mistake. Many here have tried to help you by pointing out where you went wrong, but you continued to argue with them instead of stopping, and trying to figure out where you went wrong (hell, one guy told you explicitly). Learn from your mistakes, learn how to be self-deprecating, and move on.

I don't want to argue with you anymore. It could end up being really embarrassing for you.

Your posting two camera photos does nothing to mitigate that you posted a screenshot of the problem, and insist that the real-world experience is closer to the screen shot. Not once, but at least two more times.

And to even argue that point now by pointing out that you posted two camera photos, to try to somehow counter your screenshot debacle...priceless...If anything it makes it worse because now you are using the screenshot as a baseline comparison against the cell phone photos.

Not only that, but you, YOURSELF, said: "Ignore the cell phone photos. It looks more like the screenshot"

For those that missed the fun:

Here's a pic taken with my phone. The screen shots are a much better representation of what the screen looks like. 100% brightness in a dark room.

EDIT!!! That pic looks NOTHING like my screen. Forget judging them from cell phone pics, because that looks like a moldy old towel....LOL! If my screen looked anything like that, it would have been returned immediately, so for the folks using this thread to decide on buying, ignore photos like the one in this post. Trust me! ;)

To make it worse, you are going on the offensive due to your own embarrassment, without addressing your mistake at all, and insulting other people with insults that more accurately reflect your own oversights.

I can tell I won't get anywhere with you by pointing out your mistakes, flawed logic, etc., and I have learned the best way to deal with people like is like this:

I am sorry. I was wrong. Good luck in your endeavors.

Number one, I'm no kid. Two, you seem to have a fixation issue. Do you use the word "logic" as frequently in real life as you do here. You seem to have found the right thread for fixation, so enjoy.......

As with the iPad 3, I've seen far more defective screens in person than good ones. This leads me to think that the issue is much wider spread than people are reporting, for the simple reason that most people don't notice it.

I work as a photo retoucher by trade. At our studio, we will hang 10 versions of the same image on the wall, each with extremely subtle differences in the treatment of color. If you are a retoucher or photographer by trade, or highly sensitive to color, you can easily pick out the one that's too blue, or too magenta, or too warm, etc. But the majority of the general public will merely see 10 identical images on the wall.

Do you use iPads in your photography work? A poster on the Apple Support forum said he works as a photographer, and calibrates his rMBP for accurate retouching. I've also read posts from people that they show photos to clients using retina iPads, and I wonder if there's any way to calibrate this device. I'm guessing there isn't, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

BTW... Thank you for remaining civil during this lengthy thread. It was clear that you were frustrated from the beginning, but have offered sensible advice to those who have screen problems, and posters fearing that they might not be able to see the problem. ;)

I returned my AT&T 128GB Space Grey due to yellow tint on the left with dark yellow tint being worse on the left bottom in portrait. The tint gradually faded to the right to a near pink tint on the far right side.

The Apple sales person said he was not surprised and he always waits a few weeks on new product releases for this specific reason.

The only exchange unit was a Sprint 128GB Space Grey. The left side is still more yellow than the right which is a cool blue tint. The backlight makes a big difference, because its not noticeable in bright or intense light. Dim light and lower backlight settings show more contrast between left and right. Initial I thought the problem was getting worse over time as the day progressed, until I turned on more lights in the office. I'll hold on to this one to see how reading is tonight.

My wife's iPad Air is perfect and her screen max brightness is considerably higher. In fact, she has received release day iPhones and iPads since the iPhone 3G in perfect condition and we always by in pairs

Not trying to cut in, but might have some info to contribute to your question.

I have a Datacolor Spyder to calibrate my desktop and laptop displays. I believe that Datacolor offers an iOS app. My understanding, though, is that any calibration is limited strictly to the Datacolor app because the iOS system doesn't support/allow/whatever system-wide color profiles. Any calibration would only be reflected within the app. So the purpose of their app is to display photos on your iPad in what is basically a color-calibrated viewer.

Even were calibration possible it wouldn't help in the case of the problems with the hue different on one side of the screen versus the other. No amount of calibration would be able to resolve that. Calibrating for the yellow side would result in the blue side being even bluer while calibrating for the blue side would make the yellow side even yellower.

I returned mine because of this issue and Im waiting for the new mini. Since Samsung is making those displays rather than LG or Sharp, they should be just fine.
Apple no longer uses a single supplier for displays in any model. It's a crapshoot. You get whatever's shipping.

Edit: Note that historically, display issues are a common challenge for Apple.

From now on just get your wife to choose which one she wants and then take that one! She's like a divining wife!

......

I'm calling Apple this arvo to either replace my 2nd unit or get a refund if they are going to be arsseholes about it, like they were last night on the phone. They really pushed me away from getting it replaced. The language they used was really interesting. Today I'm going to give them a gobful in a very calm and stern way.

After paying so much for an item, the least you want is a decent screen. The scratch/dings issue wouldn't bother me as much. Hell, if my iPad had the ding issue slate iPads/iPhones had but a perfect screen, I'd keep it. I hate this three tone screen I have... It goes from yellow/green to neutral to pink.

So..... what's the update? Those who have returned your iPads, have you gotten a better screen or is everyone waiting a few weeks until a new batch comes in?

"waiting a few weeks until a new batch comes in?" the million question... who knows :(

I hope everyone return everything! macbook pros too https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=18330806 , so Apple really start to make something! about the screens

I think this is normal and gets better after so many hours using it. I originally had the yellow screen issue with 2 iPad 4's. The first one I took back. Second one had the same issue. I had forgotten about it and now the screen does not show it. Same thing with my iPad air. Still looks a bit yellow but seems to be improving.

curious about why that yellow issue happens, mmm whats the technical response? anyone knows?

I think you just got used to it. I thought the same of my yellow-tinted iPad 3 *until* a friend bought one of his own and I compared my screen to his. HUGE difference. -_- I had just gotten used to my yellow-screen.

I've gone through 3 iPads so far.

1. Dark speck stuck under the screen
2. Dead Pixel, 2 faint horizontal shadowy lines across the screen in portrait mode.
3. Yellow tint on left side of the screen in portrait mode.

At this point I plan on keeping the latest one. The only time I notice the yellow tint is when the split keyboard comes up. It's very frustrating because it's a huge waste of time to keep having to go back and exchange them. I'm shocked all of these are getting through QA.

Same problem except only one faint shadowy line, check out my thread.

For the faint lines, see page 7 of this thread. I have one faint line on my iPad Air. They do not appear as dead pixels, otherwise it would be far more obvious.

If I came back to the Apple Store in 3 weeks from purchase, will they replace my iPad Air with a refurbished product? Is this a convenient exchange?

Did you return it? It's so faint compared to what everyone's showing I don't think I can get a pic to even show you guys.

That's outside the 14day return period so I guess they could try and repair it or give you a refurb. I guess it depends on how bad the defect is and what it is. Personally, I don't see a repair as such a bad option. It could mean that you absolutely get a good screen that way... or not. Who knows with Apple anymore.

I just got off the phone with them (again) and set up my third replacement, but not before they got their policy wrong, they stuffed up and put me through to the wrong department and spoke to 5 different people.

I better get a good screen this time otherwise it's clobbering time.

No way. I can clearly tell a difference between my 4th gen iPad and my air.

I have had a right trial with trying to get a decent screen. The first one i got had a dead pixel, the second had a dead pixel AND a scratched screen and the third displays the same colour balance problem and yellowing that you guys have. Here are some pics with the saturation and contrast edited to show the problem.
