I agree you right in the sense where no evidence has been found where specific serial numbers are related to a better screen quality. But maybe... I'm saying 'maybe' a new batch might offer a better quality and then the serial can indicates the production week where this new batch has been produced: do I'm fully wrong?

I concur. It's logical to assume that suppliers are making screens to meet demand as opposed to Apple having a stockpile of them.

Apple Executive Relations called me after I sent that email containing the photographs. They are arranging for a replacement to be sent to me. I have requested it to be pre-checked for defects before it is sent out.

We shall see!

All I want is a screen that I can read on :)

I hate to say this, what are the chances some random person checking in a warehouse will actually have such well-calibrated eyesight that they'll be able to spot slight yellowing/darkness on the left side? Especially if they're only checking for a few seconds?

Once executive relations are involved they usually try to do everything in their power to help. The problem is that if all the iPads have a display problem, there's only so much they can do. A few years ago, I was having a display problem with macbook pros (yellowish and uneven illumination). The manager of the Apple Store bent over backwards to help and we did multiple swaps and a display repair/swap - but there just weren't any good displays. Then he took the next step and upgraded me to the top of line 17" model from the 15" cheapest one. That solved the problem and showed just how committed to customer service Apple can be. But had there not been a different model with a different size screen (i.e. different manufacturer and quality), there would have been nothing he could help me with.

Anyway, don't mean to squash your hopes...just saying that the problem might be beyond executive relations.

I wish you good luck though and hope you get one that is satisfactory.

I hear you. I still have hope, fingers crossed...

Right, my refund has gone through and although my bank account is ready for a new attempt, I really don't know what to do!

On one hand I've grown used to having an iPad for an entire year (first the 4 then the air). On the other, the amount of frustrated returns and exchanges is really making me think twice if I should bother getting any of the new models.
It really is too much of a gamble and while, yes, you can always return it and exchange it, I don't know if I want to go through the frustrating experience of unboxing, powering up and seeing a beautiful yellow left side...

hmm, i dunno, i must be very lucky, ordered just 3 days ago at apple store online on black friday, and got today Air delivered to my door, and screen is perfect!!
Actually my ipad 2 has quite a yellow screen, as i can see now comparing it to my air, but i havent seen that before for all those years of using my ipad 2. Funny :)

Very lucky indeed. I ordered mine on Black Friday but won't receive it until the 15th. Ugh.

Also, I returned an iPad air to target because of the screen defect. Hopefully a month newer and straight from apple gets me a better screen with no pink or yellow sides. My first wasn't bad, but distracting and noticeable. Hoping for better luck this time around.

Sorry for this question, again and again, but in oder to know the production week: What's the Serial Number please? (5th 1st letters) Thx :)

Do you actually use iPad in productive way, or do you try hard to find faults in it?
Apple sold gazillions of Airs and .0001% are faulty ;)
The rest are being enjoyed by iPad users..
Currently I'm one of them :)

They have not sold "gazillions", whatever fantasy number that's supposed to represent. And you have zero factual idea of how many faulty ones there are. Those are your made up stats to support your rosy hypothesis.

My factual stats are, approximately 50 iPad Airs inspected in 3 Apple stores in 2 states, a Best Buy, an AT&T store, and an independent Apple retailer. 5 owned personally.

0% of ~55 without some degree of color shift, from yellow to blue/pink/neutral. Zero.

Dozens of photos posted here and on other sites of the Air...few if any showing no color shft.

Multiple reports from others in this and other threads here and on other sites, who have inspected Airs on display in their local stores, describing zero evenly colored screens.

Millions of happy owners with no complaints? Sure. Millions with color shifts in their screens that they can not detect or don't care about? I'd bet the house on it.

So, you're one in a million who "sees things". Not bad... :D

I saw two good screens in the Apple store i was at out of the 10 I checked. some of them were really bad and others were middling.

My 4th machine has the spine but doesn't have any yellowing - my other three had spines and dirty left side yellowing. The yellowing is such a massive turn off and really makes the screen ugly.

My new one has a uniform colour and a nice white balance that doesn't oversaturate the images on it (was able to check it against the last iPad I had as they haven't picked it up yet and the images display better detail on the new one for some reason).

Pity about the spine, but I'm going to live with it for a while and see how I go.
To be honest, I haven't noticed it since I've been using it (3 days). That's not to say I'm happy with the spine, but I've given up and told Apple so when they called me to ask how the machine is. They said if down the track it causes me trouble then I can get it replaced no questions asked and told me they would send me a smart case free of charge.

Small consolation, but I'm tired of the return merry-go-round and wanted to get off. Unsurprisingly, my disposition has improved now that it's over! Haha.

I'm on my third iPad Air now, the latest one was a warranty replacement at Milton Keynes Genius Bar for one that was originally bought from Currys/PC World so I have lost my chance for a refund.

My current one is a week 42 (oct) and has a slight yellowing on the bottom left hand corner which Is quite evident in iBooks, Google and the keyboard.

What do you suggest? To go back to a Genius Bar or order a warranty replacement via apple care? Do you know if they put a charge on your card if done via Apple Care over the telephone to ensure you return the orginal one?

I'm thinking maybe the AppleCare warranty replacement maybe newer as the one I picked up from Milton Keynes Genius Bar last Thursday was an October week 42.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I just got my iPad air over the weekend and initially I thought my screen was perfect until I watched a movie in a dark lit room and notice some light bleeding from the edges. It isn't that bad really but I don't want to risk exchanging it and getting an even worse one. What do you guys think I should do? My screen calibration is spot on perfect...don't really want a yellow screen.

I may just wait it out until next year and try a replacement then.

If your screen color calibration is perfect then keep it. That would be my advice since you have absolutely no guaranty to get a better screen with a replacement. The risk looks higher when replacing it! But really up to you then ;)

Here is my understanding of the situation : out of three replacements of iPad Air, three had flawed screen. So to me, 100% of the iPad Airs are screwed and should have never reached the market.

Those who pretend they got a perfect screen must be aware that having a perfect iPad Air is an accident. They should return it. The normal iPad Air has a specific yellowing hue and book spine effect...
Waiting now for my refund.

Ordered two from staples. Both with DMPL serial numbers (very close. Probably same batch and hour of production so I don't know if supplier has much to do with it)

White 32 gb air with verizon Lte.

See the difference for yourself.

Tested in dark room with brightness at zero. Both facing the same way. I believe the best way to test it is at minimum brightness since brightness hides the issue.

Amazing there is such a big difference. One is much cooler, and don't see a shadow. It's not perfect. I see some very minor warm spots, but it is the best I have seen.

They are out there people.

Btw. I went to two different apple stores. Only 1/4 have this good screen. Consistently at both stores. I went through 3 iPad airs. This is my third one with the good screen.

Screens. Leaned with mf cloth. No settings played with. iPhone 5 camera.

And yes. Absolutely sure both are at min brightness. Unbelievable right?

My personal guess is that it is the glass used for the screen that causes the tinge. The shadow I'm not sure.

Something interesting I found: even the white border on the front has different tinges. Oddly enough, the bad screen with the yellow and dark shadow has a cleaner brighter white, while the good screen on bottom has a white border with a yellower tinge.

The top screen also seems to show some details better, such as the wood wallpapers (you see wood grain details better) but it is not as bright and colors are not as bight. So weird.

Wow, the bottom one is quality.

I agree with brightness hiding the tint issues. Thankfully my 64 Air from John Lewis is spot on. It's replacing a 128 cellular Air as I also bought an rMini for "out and about" (which is being replaced due to yellow screen)

Hi! Which John Lewis did you get it from? My last attempt purchased 3 weeks ago and which I returned 2 days ago was from the Oxford Street store.

So... what's the update? It's been 30 days since I bought my Air at BB and have 15 more days to get an exchange or a refund. Are better batches coming in?

My screen has definitely gotten less yellow *overall*. In fact, it is much brighter/clearer than my iPad 4 or my mom's iPad 3. HOWEVER, it definitely still has that distracting yellow tint on the left. :/ I still prefer this tint though than a uniform piss yellow tint... at least I get 3/4's of a bright clear screen haha.

We seem to be getting both positive and negative feedback, although new posts seem to have slowed down a bit. I feel tempted to act like a vulture and hover over people with iPad Air at the Personal Setup are of my local Apple Store just to check their screens, lolol! :)

I don't think you can really evaluate a screen properly under the Apple lighting.
