How do you find the production week?
My serial starts with DMPLX. It's a verizon 128gb space grey.
The screen on it is perfect. No dark spots,hot/cold spots or light bleed.

My air just developed a big line down the middle of the screen... I have already exchanged it 3 times and am sick of having to bring every single apple device I buy back to the shop for screen defects. I think I may just return it and go back to my 3 until an Android tablet with good specs and a 4:3 screen comes out

Don't think you'll ever see a decent android tablet in 4:3.

On the screen topic at hand I just exchanged my unit and got a new replacement. The replacement as far as I could tell in store looked fine no yellow and I couldn't see a noticable book spine. My old unit even in the bright light of the store had noticable book spine and the employee was shocked haha.

Ill report back after more use but so far this DLMPR (I think is what it was) seems like it will be fine.

Bad news bears. Still looks yellow as piss. Couple of pics.

They only had this line of serial at the store so even though they said that I wouldn't be able to return or exchange a store purchase on the Internet I'm going to email apple support and try to escalate this and get a new ipad air. The serials they keep giving me are like November production.

Why continue to play the game. Apple QC is slipping and the technology is not really any better than many of the android systems out there. I played the lottery and won this time with my air but I lost on my macbook pro. Still have a defective screen after several returns.

Even though I was told returns on purchases through the store are not returnable or refundable online I'm still going to give apple an email and see if they can't give me a newer unit.

It just seems like apple tablets are better than android tablets and others. But they sure do charge for it.

If they don't do anything for me as much as I hate to do it I might just return for a refund and use the money to buy some other stuff and maybe a cheaper tablet just for videos and stuff.

Very dissapointed.

I'm just about there with you. Trouble is every other bit of kit I have is Apple and I've had an iPad of every generation since they came out. I've ordered one from the online store for a last attempt, and I mean last, and it's due here on 14th Jan. It's a week 50 DMQLV so we'll see.

I'm not sure what happened but I think I jumped the gun or something. Upon closer examination of this ipad (which had 7.0.4 installed even with it only being DMPLR serial? Wtf) might not even have yellowing. The only time I think there is yellowing is on the keyboard, having the bottom left be where the tabs and bar is on safari I cannot notice any yellowing when it is as such, very strange considering the picture I uploaded makes it look yellow. I'll use this for a bit longer but it seems to be oddly absent now.

Now the mystery is why this had 7.0.4 on it. How odd.

Eh blast it all, it's still there disregard.

I received my replacement yesterday at the store. Upon examinations at the store there was nothing noticed but while viewing pages on Safari and reading ebooks there is this sickening yellow tint on the screen and it is not only on the left side. 70% of the screen has this tint and only a small portion on the right looks perfect white. It is much visible using the screen keyboard . The serial is DMPLK.
What do you advise my next step to be? Take it to store and ask for another replacement? ask for refund? The problem is, under the store light it is not much visible:(

Yes ... because Android tablets use another magical kind of display, right ?

The only difference is that android user interface is mostly black, and the "yellow tint" you are speaking about is just less noticeable.

This display is far worse than I originally thought, the whole right side of the display from not quite the halfway point is very blue and white (looks like it's supposed to) while the entire rest of the display is noticeably more yellow and awful.

Will probably just get a refund considering this is the kind of product apple apparently thinks is acceptable for its customers.

Why would it matter what color the interface is when web browsing or reading a book?

Hey everyone. This is my first post here, just wanted to get some opinions.

Got a new Air 16gb space gray a couple of weeks ago and I've noticed a couple of issues. The first is the very slight dark edge on the left side in portrait mode, I'm no stranger to this as all of my iPad 2s had the same issue but we're much larger (almost 2 inches into the screen). It seems to be present mostly in the center and isn't noticeable except when on a white or light gray screen.

The second issue is a dark patch on the same side, about an inch in. It's more visible with a lower backlight and varies in intensity depending on the angle the iPad is viewed at. For the most part if I hold the iPad in landscape (as I always tend to) this patch is obscured by UI elements. It's really only visible in pure white background as any text or graphics break up the effect and make it impossible to see. Most commonly visible in mail, calendar and contacts apps.

After reading through this thread I'm not nearly as determined to exchange it. The color is beautiful and even. The whites are cool and un-tinted. There is no backlight bleed whatsoever, blacks are perfect-even at max brightness in a dark room.

I'm thinking I've gotten reasonably lucky and am now hesitant to exchange it because of what seems (after reading this thread) like a good chance I'll be getting something worse if I do. I am extremely contrast sensitive so someone else may not even be able to see what I do (it does show up well in photos though).

I have AppleCare+ on it so I'm good for 2 years if it gets any worse or if I find the newer production models are coming out all perfect.

Helpful opinions are welcome. Think I should count my blessings, wait on newer models to hit the shelves or go back and demand satisfaction no matter how many times or gallons of gas it takes?

Welcome to the MacRumors. :) Definitely stick with what you have. Especially if you have an even screen with no uneven tint. All of the iPads I've seen had the darker tint on the far left side. Sounds like you got a good one. Congrats and enjoy.

Yes, you should get a refund as an extreme measure to stop your OCD. That you have OCD you clearly demonstrated by on and off calling the same screen as good and bad. It should be simple: you glance at it first, and if it looks good to you, you should never return back to scrupulously examining it.

I agree with you, although your continuing OCD with accusing others of OCD is getting annoying.:D But, from my experience, the problem gets better or worse depending on room lighting, so I can see someone buying an Air and thinking it looks good when using it in a well lit room, only to find it looks bad later on when using it in a lower lit room.

I wound up returning my air last week, even though I had gotten it priced matched for under $400. I wouldn't even want to stick someone on ebay with a unit having the bad display issues I've had. Looks like it a back to my 3rd gen.

Let me assure you that the diagnosis of OCD doesn't include the desire to replace faulty iPad screens manufactured my huge companies that are saving money on our behalf and forcing customers to manage their own quality control.

My iPad air screen (the third one) is really problematic. In certain lighting conditions with full brightness it looks good, as in evenly illuminated without tint. In other conditions, the left side is darker (in portrait mode) and looks dirty and there is also a darker shadow area an inch from left edge. I was willing to deal with that because I had mainly been using it in portrait mode and knew that replacing it would probably not result in a better display and it could be worse. In landscape mode, the darker 'side' is very very visible - so much that it really stands out and makes the iPad reading experience less enjoyable.

To make it worse, any brightness setting around 50% makes the display look yellowish rather than dimmed down white.

Anyway, all this has been said before. Some people just prefer to live in denial, that's all.

It's called hopeful euphoria. First look you think, at last and you're so chuffed that you post on this forum. Then you start using it and you think, wait, pants, that IS yellow - again for the umpteenth time. And then you vent on here and post how frustrating it all is.

And I know this is true. I've done it too.

And if I dare mention that I'm typing this on a Note 8 that I bought before Xmas at a discount because I ended up with no tablet having sold my decent iPads, I'll suddenly be called a Samsung troll. I know how it works here. Sigh.

By the way, this Is a great tablet for £200. Fast, lovely white mostly even screen, works better with my Sonos system than any iPad ever did, and hops on my wifi hotspot better than my iPads.

But yup, still want an iPad.

Fact of the matter is, most people aren't going to notice these screen defects like some of us here will. That's why screens with the book spine effect and discoloration slip out of the factories. Why should Apple raise the price of their products for everyone to please the few of us that are ultra-picky about screen quality? As long as they continue to swap with us until we're happy, it's really petty to complain about "quality control".

A row of dead pixels? Yeah, that's gonna be a problem for everyone. But a piece of dust under the glass? I'm one of the only people I know that will notice it and also be annoyed by it. I'm thankful that Apple continues to bend over backwards for people like me, and I wish more people on these forums realized that Apple is under no obligation to keep swapping with us until we get a device that we deem to be perfect. Enjoy it while you can, because they can choose to tighten up their exchange policy at any time.
