I'm really glad you like dragging up a life changing illness, and relating it to being unsatisfied with a screen.

If you really did suffer with OCD, you'd know why your comments are so absurd and, quite frankly, in bad taste.

Thank you for that!

I got a replacement and it looks okay, haven't got into any finer inspection though.

Production week: 47 (November)

DMRL starting

Well said. Every post about a screen problem has been followed by a ridiculous OCD comment and in addition to being in poor taste it's getting old.

I got my air exchanged today. The first one she pulled out of the box had a terrible book spine, and the next one has an uneven screen tint. It's not too bad, and I probably will keep it, because at this point, getting a perfect screen is too rare to keep trying. It sucks because my last one was perfect, but I'm not about to keep wasting time at the Apple store. This will probably be the last Apple product I buy though.

I found a white air serial dmplw. Week 51 and the screen looks killer. Checked it at 50% brightness and no yellow on keyboard or anywhere else no dark bands either on left side. It is nice and bright with a cool tone also went into dark room with brightness set to 100 % and there was very minimal light bleed around couple edges, which is a non issue for me. And no dead pixels either.*
so its a keeper

I'm getting my new ipad air next week, really excited since I'm upgrading from ipad 3. Anyhow. Have been reading this thread a bit and just wanted to ask you what the "book spine" effect is and maybe if someone could make a step by step guide to how you quality control your ipad display.

Thanks

My advice: if it looks OK it's OK. Don't get into the trap that I have about testing and looking for flaws. They're almost always there if you look long enough. So if it looks nice, enjoy it!

That's not a keeper, Yardman, it's miraculous ;)

Yea. i guess it is been readin and seein pics of all the horrible screens u guys been gettin around here so i was expecting the worst. I did have another serial number unit but never opened it. Then i read about guys gettin some good dmpl units so i checked all the meijers around here and found one.

Air screen, left corner is brighter than right

Do anybody have the issue when one corner - left - is brighter than right? On my iPad Air it doesn't look like yellow tint but when I use Safari or other programs with white background, it seems to me that corners have a different brightness. So I think now about replacement but I'm not sure, that other iPad doesn't have this issue or yellow tint screen.

Sorry for bad English.

I wouldn't exchange if you've got a good screen..

Yeah, I know the feeling. When I got my iphone 5 a couple of months ago I pretty much got obsessed with battery life.

I won't go crazy about it but just hoping there are no major issues with the display. Anyhow, my parents ipad 3 had some yellowish tint compared to my ipad 3 and I baked it for 5-6h between cloths, max brightness and white screen. And after that the screen was, from what I could tell, exactly as good as my screen.
So is there any use for trying this out with the air as well?

I got my hopefully final Air today. A week 52 one and the screen looks mostly even. Certainly better than the ones from earlier weeks and many I've seen in the Apple Store. The week 50 I got earlier this week was good too apart from dead pixels. So far this one looks promising.

I'd say production problems look like they're receding a bit. Thankfully.

Of course Apple deny there is anything wrong with screens and that dead pixels are OK. And that's fine but I don't have to take a device like that from new.

I'm glad you're willing to bend over for sub par products but not me. When they try to market their screens as the best of the best with their "retina" technology and act as if one can do photo editing and video editing on it I have a major problem with that.

These screens are unevenly lit, non uniform, defective by either design or defects and just generally poor. I won't accept that.

No more and no less than any other brand ...
You won't be satisfied with a tablet: you need a white sheet of paper. Evenly lit and definitely white.

----------

If it has a defect it's not excellent.

It's not a defect in 99% of the cases discussed here ... it's the LCD technology.
Most of the people in this thread are just looking for something doesn't exist yet, at least on this class of devices.

Yes it's the LCD technology that's strangely absent in all of my other LCD displays including my 4s.

Oh my... Here we go again... My iPad 4, with its heavy CRT screen, has a perfect display. So yeah, no doubt LCD tech must be the culprit. Sigh .

Today I had to give up my iPad. As my 2nd replacement had the tint issue and 4 dead pixels I took it to the store and after opening 2 brand new units, both had the book spine problem and the Genius offered me a refund.

As I already have tested 5 iPads and all were problematic in display I decided to accept the refund and now I should live some months without a tablet. As I literally hate Android tablets and I love iPad except for the screen issues, I have to wait some months to see if Apple will rectify the issue.

All things aside, the customer orientation and helpfulness I received was beyond my imagination. I will be a life time Apple user if I happen to get a non-problematic iPad Air :apple:

That doesn't explain those who finally got a good one after repeated returns and are happy or those who were happy with previous models.

Getting a refund for my ipad was like lifting an annoying yellow weight off my shoulders that was dark on the left side.

I feel much better. Ill get a different tablet to enjoy.

It's present in every device of that class .... Maybe less noticeable, especially on small screen like iPhone, but still present

It's not perfect ... It's better.
When iPad 4 was released I remember a lot of whiners on the forum reported how bad it was compared to the iPad 3. And the same was for the 3 compared to the iPad 2 ... This is macrumors normal behavior

They got a better display, not a perfect one.
It could be less noticeable, on some units, and more on other.

Can you give me a source for this apparent inherent flaw in LCD tech? I've gone over my displays with a fine tooth comb and only notice backlight bleed. That's it. So far you're posting here and insisting that all of our experiences with other tech is wrong and that you know for a fact all displays have this.

It's not a flaw ... It's just the way they are designed.
They are good panels, but they are targeted at a sub 500$ device, so they couldn't be like 2000$ professional monitors (and those still have "defects").
There are better and worse, but there isn't a thing like a perfect display.

It's silly to say "I'll buy another brand" since Apple isn't designing nor manufacturing any display, so there are good chances you are going to get a display from the same manufacturer on another brand tablet.
