Technical question: Does this mean I won't need to buy a separate :apple:TV? Will I be able to just sign in with my account details onto the Samsung? I'm thinking of replacing my tv if this would be the case.
Yes, you will not need Apple TV.

Wow! Mine works perfectly baby. It actually seems even faster than the 4K Apple TV I had. No update ever showed up for my Samsung tv. I just searched the Apple TV app and it popped up

The 1251 update with Airplay support has been in your TV since before yesterday. They just had to push out the final touches with the macos/ios update and TV app.

<<The 1251 update with Airplay support has been in your TV since before yesterday. They just had to push out the final touches with the macos/ios update and TV app.>>. I've got Q9FN (2018) with FW 1251 (which is the latest one at present). I also updated mi Iphone and Ipad to Ios 12.3, but still no traces of Airplay on the TV :-( !! Any clue?

I have a UE49MU6100 here, version 1270, bought in 2018. No update or app has appeared yet... If anyone knows how to get the update, please share it with us.

MU series is 2017 model, so your TV not support for the Airplay 2 or Apple TV App.

NU 2018 models
RU 2019 models

Hmmm....

I wonder when the firmware update will drop. I have a 2018 model on the list, but no firmware updates are available at the moment.

You can check if you have the update easily by checking for “Apple AirPlay Settings” under your tv Settings > General

Once this is present, when you try out airplay from your iOS device, you’ll see your Samsung Tv pop-up on the list on your airplay compatible devices. Be sure to download Apple TV from the Samsung App Store from your Tv. Im using software version 1251 and model code is QN75Q7F5A

This is the change log from Samsung for my tv:

Version 1,251.0
Release Date: April 2
Details: Support iTunes App Feature on 2018 TV. Add TV control feature using 3rd party speakers (eg Amazon Echo / Google Home).

Samsung ‘MU’ models were the 2017 model. I would not expect them to get this update.

THANK YOU for all the great details --

Do you know, once you login the TV app into your ITunes Account, does it let you set Download Restrictions? I want to buy one of these Samsung's and put it in our Airbnb unit for guests, but don't want them to be able to make purchases from the TV app.

Thanks!

PS - For reference, the regular Apple TV does let you set download restrictions... info here if you're not familiar...

Yes. I just made my first movie purchase on the TV app on my Samsung TV. It asked for my Apple ID password and even 2FA, after that it asked me if I wanted to ask for a password after 15 minutes, always or never.

It seems they decided not to update my Series 6 UHD SmartTV. Although I’d love to have the update, I can live without it. They’re are plenty of other features.

Yeh it appears some/most TVs had their firmware updates prior to Apple's software updates so the ATV app and AirPlay 2 started functioning with Apple's Mojave/iOS updates yesterday! I've got the Samsung UE82NU8000 and the update to 1251 took place 4 weeks ago. ATV and AirPlay 2 working great. Love it!

I’ve got a 2018 Q65 Samsung TV (Costco version that falls somewhere between the Q6 and Q7). I can hardly wait to get home and give it a try and see if this works on my TV...

I have a 75" 2019 Samsung Q90R (stellar TV BTW 110% recommend it) and the Apple TV app loaded fine from the store and is working great. I did not need to update the firmware. I'm assuming I will need to update firmware to add Airplay 2 native support. There is no current update available for the TV. My Q90R is currently on version 1065.
Getting the 82” flavor Thursday... great to see this post...

Given that Apple is now open to 3rd part support, is there something like a dongle I can buy to stream iTunes content? Like Chromecast? I really don't think this capability is worth $180 for AppleTV when you can find Chromecast as low as $35

I was surprised to see Samsung allowed the Apple TV app on their lower end 2018 TVs.. I have the 65" NU7100 and was able to download to Apple TV app and it works perfectly fine, Just need to move the Apple TV to another part of the house. I haven't tried Airplay support though. I'd be thrilled if that works

Same here, I just bought the UN40NU7200 on sale for $299 and it's working great. Apple TV App, AirPlay, etc. There was no update, I believe it said the last installed update was 5/2

I was able to buy a 50" 6 series for around $300 last black friday. Never expected I'd get AirPlay 2 support on it :)

I think we got the same TV. Unfortunately my 50" is connected to our ATV 4K, so I haven't used the smart TV feature. But I'm okay with that.

Apple won’t be supporting the Chromecast, but they will be supporting the $40 Roku stick soon. That’ll be your cheapest option for streaming iTunes content.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting this update for airplay 2. But I am however GREATLY disappointed. First of all I have a 2018 Samsung UN65NU8500. I updated the tv and updated my iOS devices to 12.3. At first I tried to airplay a tv show I was watching in safari to the tv but I only get the audio from it with the scrubber on a black screen. Then I tried to send a music video in my iTunes library to the tv and my device gives an error message “this file type is not supported on the tv”. I know Apple used m4v format but I didn’t expect airplay to be a problem. The only thing that works for me is screen mirroring which I’m not a fan of.

I was holding out on getting an Apple TV because of this announced update but it looks like I’ll still need to purchase one. I feel they hyped this update up for no reason. :(
