I'm sure they thought they could address it in time for launch. These things happen ALL THE TIME. My company misses deadlines quite frequently and so do our competitors. In fact, we've announced products that never shipped!

The people who are complaining don't understand how complex a product launch is, and are definitely spoiled because Apple is such a well-oiled machine compared to other companies. And for anyone who says this never happened under Steve Jobs, you either have very short memories or you haven't been following Apple for very long.

The ability to sync audio between the buds is fundamental technology to the product. These things should have done that long BEFORE they did anything else. It's unthinkable that the essential functionality of the product doesn't work even as they are announced to the public as the ameliorating factor in removing the headphone jack. What good is easy pairing, pause when removed, gyroscopic controls, etc. when the most basic function fails?

There is absolutely no justification for giving Apple a pass on this debacle.

And removing the floppy was a way for Apple to include CD-ROM drives and charge more for original iMacs. It also helped them secure a deal with Sony to supply all of the CD-ROM drives. Everything is about business but you don't understand Apple or business if you think they care about selling dongles.

There's nothing wrong with that, as long as your solution actually fulfills a real, important need. I don't care if they charge $400 more, if the need is real.
What gets me is when they remove a perfectly functional piece, for no real reason ("courage"? Really?) and sell you a non-needed solution for $150.

Also this "floppy disk was also removed" rethorical crap has to end sooner or later.

Lets be honest they didn't bother checking that the lightning EarPods worked properly before releasing them . At least these aren't available yet.

You'll notice that the Airpods have not been released yet. It's precisely because they did a quality check before releasing them that they are not available.

They even tested the batteries before releasing them, unlike some companies...

So the release was postponed due to an audio distortion issue.

In other words, it was delayed by a delay issue. ;)

I've shot off an email to Cook (I'm sure his staff gets it) asking him to address the delay. If they are not viable, tell us. Stop all this ignorance.

Removing the floppy disk was a necessity.
Bluetooth headphones is just a ploy to sell more dongles and stuff.

Uh oh. Apple screwed up another evil plot. The Evil Plot Department removed the legacy headphone jack to sell dongles, but someone forgot to tell the shipping and packing folks not to add lightning equipped headphones and a free dongle. And to make matters worst, the idiots in sales are selling dongles for half price at our cost! Time for Tim Cook to go if this is how he runs his evil plots!

How long have you been a customer? I've been buying their stuff for 34 years. I promise you, the majority of those years did not see anything innovative released. I agree the Mac is being neglected and that worries me the most of anything as it's the backbone of the company. Every company has problematic releases. That doesn't worry me. Mac neglect does.

One could argue that the iphone & iOS devices are the backbone of Apple's business now. Not saying that Apple isn't neglecting their macs tho. I agree that they are. I'd love to buy a new IMac, but am waiting for the next update so as not to buy the older tech. It is amazing to me that Apple hasn't updated the Mac pro in over 3 years. I remember the time when the art community(photogs, graphic designers, filmmakers) were Apple's main customers and Macs were their bread & butter. Theyd constantly be upgrading them. Not anymore. It's all about the iPhone & ipads now. Apples main customers are the mass public not the artist community. Not saying you can't be creative on iOS devices. I'm an artist and use my iPhone & my iPad all the time for creating Art. Love them. It's just interesting how Apple has changed in who they prioritize now.

Not young (36), and I witnessed the removal of the floppy, which I welcomed very much.
And where did I say that it's a big deal? I am saying that it sucks, and as a customer that makes me unhappy especially looking at the trend. Should I smile and draw unicorns and rainbows?

No. But you should put it into perspective. Removing the floppy drive was a much greater inconvenience. We didn't have fast broadband for distributing software. CD-ROMs were slow. Zip drives were expensive and unreliable. Hard drives were expensive. Overall it was a much greater inconvenience than plugging your existing wired headphones into a tiny little ten dollar adapter.

The Airpods are coming soon? That reminds me of something else that was coming soon. I even have a picture of it.

I've had bluetooth on all my smartphones for the last 6+ years and never wanted to own wireless headphones. I hate wireless headphones; terrible sound quality, i gotta fiddle around with turning on/off blue tooth to reduce battery drain, it's another device i need to remember to keep charged, it's expensive and worst of all, after 400+ charges, you can throw away those wireless headphones straight into the trash.

All that BS to put it up with just for the sake of wireless isn't worth it. I'd actually pay extra to be wired. I do a lot of running these days and wired hasn't bothered me one bit.

NO THANKS.

There are other units on the market that does no suffer from this.

This has cemented my concerns. Tim should be voted out. Phil next.

They provide a lightning adapter. Hope that helps (sic)

I bicycle a lot and wires never bothered me either. Removing the headphone jack is causing people to buy more (dongles, wireless headphones, whatever). That is the reason behind this. Otherwise, people could keep using the headphones that have always worked.

EDIT: I stand corrected. I forgot they included the adapter and such.

Good grief. You're either very young and didn't experience removing the floppy first-hand or you're just a complainer. Either way, it doesn't change the fact that removing the headphone jack is no big deal.

What's your point?

My headphones exist and they'll still sound great 8-10 years from now.

Wired isn't going anywhere because a wired connection is going to necessarily be better than a wireless connection. Even if there are consumers who pick convenience over quality there will still be those who want the higher quality product.

There are still people (like myself) who choose high quality wired mechanical keyboards over the cheap wireless membrane keyboards.

To each their own.

And another example of screwing up evil plots. First Apple removes the floppy to sell CD players, then some bozo in engineering removes the CD? How incompetent can Apple get with screwing over consumers???

Who the heck is heading up the Evil Plots Department these days? I'm guessing it's Eddy Cue and he's too busy working on Apple Music deals when there are evil plots to carry out. Fire him and Tim Cook, NOW!

Gimme a mini review!
Impressive, They really have a comfortable fit. I am using the foam tips and worked out with them this morning and they stayed in my ears the whole time. Usually I have to adjust my earbuds a few times during a workout. I like how they turn on automatically when you take them out of the case. I did not experience any drops this morning. I wore them for just over 2 hours and the battery still said it had 1 1/2 hours left. The controls are easy to use. Left ear bud controls volume up/down and press and hold a few seconds for a short beep and release to skip songs. Right bud is used to pause and turn off. I haven't played with the app much more than updating the firmware, but you can create your workouts in the app. I like the idea they are IP67 rated with a 3 year warranty. I don't think the AirPods are sweat resistance but these are.

Consider that others don't have the same usage pattern as you. Very often, I plug my phone into a set of computer speakers in the shop to listen to while I'm working. If I'm forced to buy a dongle or a new set of speakers, then removal of the jack doesn't benefit me. In fact, it simply benefits Apple.

I realize others don't have this, so it's not a one-size fits all situation.

I get where you're coming from. I took a road trip recently and forgot the headphone adapter. I plug my iPhone into my car stereo via a headphone jack. So I had to find the nearest RadioShack and buy a $10 adapter. And now that one just stays in the car.

I believe Apple chose to remove the headphone jack for the reason they've given, to utilize that space for other components, fully recognizing that we're headed in the wireless direction and lightning provided a suitable compromise. To me its not a big deal.

3 1/2 hours battery life that's soooo impressive.

I don't buy the synchronizing audio between the two as the main issue because that is a super easy problem to solve. If that is the main issue, Apple has a big problem when it comes to competence of their engineering and firmware/software teams.

I'd also have expected it to be brought up in reviews, etc.

I'm going to say maybe battery life, maybe usability issues they didn't think about i.e. using just one, sticking one in your pocket causing it to pause when you only want to use one, etc.
