I don't believe the headphone jack was removed simply to sell AirPods. The removal of the headphone jack is a non-issue. They give you lightning headphones with the iPhone, as well as a tiny little adapter that is far less bulky than many headphone cables I've seen. There are plenty of Bluetooth headphone options out there. Apple plans to offer a premium option with AirPods, but they are hardly the reason the jack was removed.

Sometimes things take longer than planned. It's not the end of the world.

They're certainly not doing it for charity, and there's no other reason to remove something functional for something that... doesn't work yet. The alternative solutions (lighting headphones) are just to sugarcoat the medicine; they're bulky solutions (can't even use the headphones on the new MBP!).

So they were potentially delayed for technical related issues. So be it. I would rather have a product that works exceptionally versus be riddled with intermittent fault errors. And it won't change that these won't sell, because they will sell out/back order with in the hour.
You're fooling yourself if you think after all this "delayed testing" that the Airpods will be flawless. The simple fact that they ARE delayed suggests that once they are released, they will be fraught with intermittant fault errors.

This is embarrassing for Apple, but it's still much better to not release them until they're ready.

Agreed. I'm glad they're not fielding it until ready. But really, they have to be careful of setting false expectations of a launch date and then failing to meet it. Better to wait till sure before announcing. But then they did this sort of thing with the original iPhone launch and got away with it even though their demo phones for Steve kept crashing if you used them in the wrong order.

This rumor sounds like it was originated from China and was translated wrong. Apple's entire approach involves independent pairing and operation of the Airpod if one should not be paired. It's either a supply issue or they're still tweaking software last minute.

Of course, it's a supply issue.

15M Airpods would have to ship.

The constraint is clearly the W1 chip production.

You can say what you want but sorry it's not about me.
When you're passing judgement and speaking about how THESE THINGS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN then it is about you. I actually want to buy these but am I bitching? No. I don't claim to be able to do better. You do.

So as I said, please tell us all about how YOU would be so much better and would NEVER let things like this happen.

You don't know this until they are released. If and when this happens, then you have a case. Until then, this means nothing.

He's a customer. He was promised a release date of 10/30/2016. As of 12/9/2016 the release date was not respected. He's right: "These things should never happen." (Esp. During christmas season)

Ah yes! It's called the aritificial apple supply shortage.

That doesn't excuse Apple. If a company says : "Delivery date is X" and/or "Net Pay 30 days"; that is the acceptable and accepted deadline. A second later, and it becomes a "delayed product". Two months later, it's a "failed launch" and in the business world this is usually unacceptable.
No one forced apple to name a date, no one forced apple to do anything. The reason for the failure is not a random guy posting on MacRumors, but it's within Apple's walls.
So then you know exactly what issue is that they are having right? And in your experience launching products on this scale you've never had this happen at the 11th hour right?

So tell us more about your experience and knowledge. If you say "this should never happen to a company..." then clearly you know better than Apple on matters like this. I'm sure Tim would love a long, thorough email on how to do things better.

How did you survive the removal of the floppy drive?!?!?!?

There's plenty of reasons to remove the headphone jack, starting with the obvious trend towards wireless headphones. Just because they don't have an Apple logo doesn't makes any of the numerous offerings any less functional.

Second and more to the point, why waste the space for an outdated jack? Whether they removed it this time around or in a few years, it's going away.

You're making a mountain out of a mole hill. They provide an adapter. It's anything but bulky. Same goes for the lightning headphones.

Don't even compare the two. Two total different issues; this is not equivalent to removing the floppy drive.

Worked my ass off to prevent this to happen during my aerospace years. And no delay was acceptable (unless it was a government program) in that industry where a program spans 20 years.

Exactly. Removing the floppy was a much bigger deal. You need to get a grip. There are hundreds of Bluetooth headphones out there. AirPods will be one of many options. You act like it's all or nothing. AirPods or bust. Seriously???

If what you said was true, every tech product released this year would be fraught with errors because they all receive software/firmware tweaks just prior to and after their release. Only hardware issues creates unsolvable problems.

OK so Tell Tim how to do it better. Put your experience to work. Bitching on a forum isn't helping these things get produced.
