I mean, whilst i'm not remotely interested in these as the sound quality will be no where near my acceptable standards - comparing these to current bluetooth headphones is a bit like saying "there is already an iPod, it's called an MP3 player you can get them for $20" when it first came out in 2001.

So what headphones would you recommend for running or riding my bike?

See.. I'm happy to have a discussion about these, and compare opinions.

The pairing to multiple devices is a nice idea I guess. Personally I tend to use different sets of headphones for different circumstances.. 'earphones' for my mobile phone, and 'headphones' for my desktop computers. So again I guess not much use for me necessarily, but I can understand if you have multiple devices it could be useful.

I guess I never found wires to be such a chore as some people find them. I did run a set of cheap Amazon bluetooth earbuds for a while and they were pretty good but the units poked out of the ear a bit and became uncomfortable if you tried to put a hat on over them to secure them in place, and would eventually just drop out of your ears because of their own weight. I guess the Apple design solves that one :)

I think the ideal / preferred wireless solution for me is a pair of buds joined by a cable that you can just pop round the back of your neck like a band. That way when you need to remove an earphone (i.e. to talk to someone) it has somewhere to go, rather than having to hold or pocket them.

Anyway. Good points, well presented - I totally get the case for these. And I can see why people will want them. I'm just not as enthused as some others are. To each his/her own though.

I can understand that. I have a set of bluetooth cans (Sennheiser PX360BT) that I use only with an Apple TV - they work well and it's an easy process (turn them on and they take over the audio, as I never move them from one device to another).

For workouts I've been using Jaybirds for 5-6 years now (2 buds connected by a wire), and with time I slowly despised the wire on the back of my neck.. always falling one way or the other and tugging too much on one of the buds. But I put up with it. Even when listening to podcasts around the house or at work I tend to only want to have one ear occupied, so I leave one bud dangling, and it drives me crazy how it pulls on the other. And over the past few years, what's become annoying as well is moving between devices (watch for outdoor runs and strength training, phone for treadmill running, and iPad on a mount for indoor cycling).

Along with those I also use a Moto Hint (mostly for single ear, no wire, listening to podcasts and phone calls). But the audio quality is pretty bad for non-call stuff.

I've always dreamed about fully wireless buds, for the past 3-4 years at least, but honestly never thought we'd see them done. So I'm quite excited to try these out and retire my jaybirds & moto hint.

Another Apple product that you can't actually buy. Awesome.
Actually, people are buying them all over the world. This is such a weird comment I don't even have the words...

I was specifically talking about myself, knowing my ears, knowing how the Airpods look - I have used similarly-shaped earphones before, they tend to fall out. That's why I don't use them. If you want to believe Apple have created a magical shape that fits all ears that's fine though :D

Exactly. I wasn't claiming they will fall out of everyone's ears, only that that they look like they would fall out of mine.

*shrugs*
Reasonable. I'd recommend trying them at a store, however.

Yours is even weirder. There are people in threads here, Reddit, and many other sites where people are responding saying that they have gone to Apple stores and they had none to purchase. If you order on the website, you have to wait a month and a half. Like I said, another Apple product that you can't actually purchase. Awesome.

For a tech site that is not about politics, This Sig says one thing. I need to inject politics into everything. So here we are
So you refuse to keep it in PRSI or PM? You can't help yourself. Seek help.

On a RELATED note I'm going to check my local Apple Store today and pick them up if they have some. If they suck i will return them.

Because I think she belongs in jail for mishandling classified data I can't have an opinion on AirPods? How close minded are you? Just stay on topic.

Your red, political in nature, signature makes it hard to see anything that you post - let alone take you seriously. But I think that you wanted to make a statement, and you did. If you want people to see beyond your sig, at least change the color...

HILLARY FOR PRISON 2016

I refuse? Every post you do is Political. Your refusing to see that.

I am guessing you are being sarcastic here.

That said, every other wireless earbuds is selling at a higher price than the EarPods. I don't think it's feasible for these companies to engineer a similar product, sell it at so low a price and still hope to stay profitable.

Apple is basically sucking all the oxygen out of this market, and only Apple is coming to the fight armed with an oxygen mask.

Yes, being sarcastic.

The current competitors by the little startup guys are interesting but not really competitors. Those are products that will sell in the 1,000s of units if lucky. A big manufacturer who can be sure of selling a million of these over a year (think Samsung) is going to be able to drive prices down. Also I'm not sure how much value the market will see in there not being a wire between the phones. Certainly in the "cans" style that sits on your head there is no need to not have a wire between the earpieces. And I think the strap that goes around behind your head and which can be used to let the earphones dangle around your neck looks fine and has a functionality value. It also makes manufacturing much easier.

But I expect all the little guys that stick individually in your ear that have come out by smaller shops to be dead on arrival. It is sad, but I expect they won't work as well as what Apple can make and as you say they cost more. But in six months or so the Chines companies that reverse engineer will figure something out that is cheap and works similarly. They always do.

I wonder if the massive lines like in the picture are to get people xmas gifts?

I just tried, they sold out and neither store in my area had in stock

an employee said people lined up early and they didn't have an early open but wanted to get the crowd to diffuse so sold them early than opening, and only like 1/3rd of people got them

thats ok I have December 29th delivery, better than unknown or 6 weeks/2 months out

I don't refuse to see. I disagree. I've been posting here since April with that signature and my tech opinions have never been overshadowed by my signature until today.

If YOU can't see past my signature then don't respond to my posts, but do t waste our time by commenting in a thread that's about the AirPods. Take it to PRSI or just don't comment. But I'm not going to keep feeding the troll here. Stay on topic or talk to me in PRSI if you want to talk politics.

Done.

Is the limited availability just to create buzz?

hard to say,

I think its so predictable that apple has supply issues or purposefully shorts demand

seems to happen with like every product, not to mention online availability more prevalent than store ( I get that they have more people to cover ,but as a consumer I look to their site instead of b&m)

Timmy is really a supply chain genius

I got my this morning, at 6am, on my way to gym, Apple store in Manhattan, 5th ave, no line at all, got my and left, feels great, good sound, happy with it.

Earpods don't fit in my ears at all i.e. they don't fit, the slightest move makes them fall. Same for the old earphones or for any non in-ear earphones actually.
Is it worth for me even trying to see if they fit?
I'd love Apple to release in-ear Airpods. Don't get me started on their Beats stuff...

:D Nice to see Regent Street queues again. I thought Apple tried to beat that kind of Apple "Magic" to death.

While waiting for them like crazy I can't help but wonder - Will I be able to use them during a flight?
Or I need to go back to wired earbuds?
FAA regulations allow BT headphones, so on domestic flights you'll be fine. A few international airlines still don't allow them though.

The bigger issue is that the airpods are an open design, so they don't block out the engine noise. You'll have to turn the volume up very high (and might bother your seat neighbor). In-ear models or noise-cancelling headphones are much better on airplanes.

Not provable.
What if an "audiophile" wanted something light to use instead of the set of expensive cans.
What if an "audiophile" didn't want a set of Bluetooth with a wire or some physical connection between the two ear pieces.

There could be any number of scenarios where the so called "audiophile" might opt to use these.
Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I meant an audiophile would not buy them for the sole or main purpose of having superior sound quality.

I was at the Stanford shopping center store 830, store opened early at nine. About 20 line and was able to pick up a couple, but I think I was at the end of their inventory availability for today. So they probably had somewhere between 60 and 100 units

Got to the store when they opened. They put 15 out and sold out within 5 minutes, then they put out a bunch more. Demand seems strong.

Did you get a pair? When these were initially delayed, it was evident the tensions were growing to get a pair of These. It doesn't shock me with the hype. Mine will be here next week.

Yeah, I got a pair but only within 5 minutes of the store opening. They're apparently receiving regular shipments so if you want to get them early you can try tomorrow morning.
