I've heard it's an option to tap to play/pause. Not sure how many taps.

It is for double tap, but to use it you must deactivate the Siri feature. What I'd like really is 1 tap for play/pause and 2 taps for Siri.

Or it would be nice if you could configure the left bud 2 taps for play/pause and the right one for Siri etc

Because they want them? I don't understand why people feel the need to comment in this thread and every other AirPod thread when they have no intentions to buy them either.

is it 6 weeks or 6 months? Just want to know what your made up dates are.
Online orders are 6 weeks out. And If you think back they were announced in September and wont be at the point of walk-in whenever or immediate shipment till 5-6 months AFTER they're announced. It'll be March.

If I order today the earliest they'll get to me is mid-Feb. 5 months after announcing them. Make sense?

Ok, how about instead of archaic we call it a terrible experience?

I've been using bluetooth headsets for over a decade. For the past 5 years I've been using some combination of bluetooth buds as the ONLY headphones with my iPhone.

Two things make the AirPods quite "a new thing":

1) W1 and seamless pairing to all devices - I use a combination of 2 different headsets (single bud and stereo buds) with a Watch, iPhone, iPad and Mac. And switching between devices is an absolutely terrible and annoying experience.

2) Fully wireless buds. These are quite new (very few others on the market, and the ones that are on the market are more expensive and lack the W1). I absolutely cannot wait to have zero wires when using these (as I suspect many people are).

See.. I'm happy to have a discussion about these, and compare opinions.

The pairing to multiple devices is a nice idea I guess. Personally I tend to use different sets of headphones for different circumstances.. 'earphones' for my mobile phone, and 'headphones' for my desktop computers. So again I guess not much use for me necessarily, but I can understand if you have multiple devices it could be useful.

I guess I never found wires to be such a chore as some people find them. I did run a set of cheap Amazon bluetooth earbuds for a while and they were pretty good but the units poked out of the ear a bit and became uncomfortable if you tried to put a hat on over them to secure them in place, and would eventually just drop out of your ears because of their own weight. I guess the Apple design solves that one :)

I think the ideal / preferred wireless solution for me is a pair of buds joined by a cable that you can just pop round the back of your neck like a band. That way when you need to remove an earphone (i.e. to talk to someone) it has somewhere to go, rather than having to hold or pocket them.

Anyway. Good points, well presented - I totally get the case for these. And I can see why people will want them. I'm just not as enthused as some others are. To each his/her own though.

Question: I'm on the subway, and it's packed. I open the case, and the person right next to me has their iPhone up and running, do they get a prompt to pair the phones to their phone?

My local Apple Store had 11 units and sold out within 4 minutes after opening. I got there literally right after they sold out.

Apple sure did F up this launch. Orders are 6 weeks out online. Announce a product and wont be available for some until 6 months later......ridiculous.

We must have went to the same Apple Store! I left that store and went to another Apple Store that was 25 minutes away only to find out that they did not receive any stock!!!

Don't know but I have to hold case inches from iPhone to register.

I really didn't think there'd be people lining up for these. $169 for mediocre sound?
Have you tried them?
I haven't so I can't comment but honestly until you have tried them for yourself it is very difficult to pass judegment on the sound quality.
Sound is a very subjective thing. Some people don't like the sound my Quad Electrostatics produce. Not enough Bass for many. I do like them. See, subjective.

Yesss. Mine just arrived. Same deal as yours: 2 days earlier than promised. :D

Their charge was down at 11% for one, 17% for the other and 72% for the case. (The case is tiny, BTW. Super portable)

Can you post pictures of them in your ears? I really want to see what these look like on. the few pictures I have seen they look pretty dorky.

So if this product flies off the shelves, and if between this and Beats, Apple dominates the revenue and profit stream of the headphone space, is Apple then doomed? I mean think about it. Won't this be another space where a "_____ killer" can now come out? "Is this the AirPod killer?" should become common headlines in 2017. And man, at $159 there is so much room for cheaper stuff to come out with similar functionality.

I think it is pretty clear that Apple is setting themselves up for trouble with this success.
I am guessing you are being sarcastic here.

That said, every other wireless earbuds is selling at a higher price than the EarPods. I don't think it's feasible for these companies to engineer a similar product, sell it at so low a price and still hope to stay profitable.

Apple is basically sucking all the oxygen out of this market, and only Apple is coming to the fight armed with an oxygen mask.

Wear them anyway, until someone says otherwise. We KNOW it doesn't' interfere with anything because we have wifi on lots of planes now operating in the same (and with much more power) frequency range, so there's no reason not to use them.

I do love doing these sort of pretend presents for ourselves, I've put a few things away until the arbitrary day (mainly cos I haven't got time to use them at the minute anyway!)

The AirPods are now wrapped up under the tree! I thought why not, it's only a few more days.

Plus, I can read more reviews and build the hype up.

Apple needs the competition, and we need it as users.
But headphones, wow.
How about some new computers and better software?

I know, I know...but this is part of their complete package for removing the jack on the iPhone...so, it's really an extension of that. It's also set up for incremental updates that add some semblance of difference between generations and across platforms.

So...the next airpods will ship with USB-C cable/charger. It will be marketed as a step up. The next line of MBP will lose their audio jacks (not because the audio jack is "pro," but in the move towards thinner). I wouldn't be surprised if Apple moves to the USB-C with the iPhone next round, either...it'd be a move towards consistency across lines. Currently, we're in the growing pain part...especially without the "legacy" USB-A on the MBP (which really isn't legacy, yet). I've complained about the MBP refresh...but I'm hopeful that next year (if they do an update to Kaby Lake), is the year that they'll iron out some of these issues.

And Apple delivers yet another blockbuster smash hit product that has demand far outstripping supply.

Doomed? Ha. Tim wins yet another round against the doom and gloomers.
no, he loses. The Doom merchants and the 'Tim must go' fans will slag him off for not making enough of them for the release.
He'll be accused of creating artificial shortages when the first pair go on Fleabay for $300+

Just got to wonder why people who comment on sound quality and comfort didn’t go for Beats Solo Wireless 3 instead. It has the same tech (Apple W1 chip) but they are actually decent headphones for consuming content.

Portability? I can't keep the beats solo 3 in my shirt pocket the same way I can with the airpods.

You're the 97986th person to say this, but you're still wrong. All similar products, meaning true wireless earbuds that have about the same features as the airpods, are pretty freaking expensive. The airpods are expensive, but not a ripoff compaired with competing devices.
you are so right

Mine get delivered tomorrow. Can't wait!! They are supposed to be an Xmas present. I think I'm going to open them and use them a couple days. Then put them back in their packaging, wrap them and open them this weekend. :)
