It's not selling like hot cakes. They underproduce them. They do it with several products to boost the hype.
I agree that this might not have the best stock at launch but what products you’re talking about?

UK is showing as 9th Jan for Sky Blue

I knew these would sell well, despite the initially shocking price. They look really good and distinctive, and we can reasonably assume they'll sound good too.

The features are there...it's an Apple product.

For those that can afford to, why not? If I had the money to burn (and liked wearing cans), I would too.

I'm not surprised these are going fast. Contrary to what many here think, they are actually not that expensive if the quality of sound delivers, it's on par with many audiophile headphones ( usually in the 400 - 1500 $ range ). And these have many features nowhere to be found in similar headphones, like the surround sound for movies.

Audiophile headphones can go up to $5k or so, and not uncommonly bought in the $2-3k area (just check out head-fi).

To me, the star of the show will have to be how good the DSP is. This is becoming more of thing in hifi, esp. in speakers as all-in-one systems (just look at Dutch and Dutch 8c and Kii 3s, both $10k+... and high-end studio monitors like Genelecs w/ their GLM system).

I'm willing to give Apple a good leg-up over competing solutions. They have the R&D budget to eclipse them, and for that, plus seemingly better build quality, these really could be worth a $200 premium over some of the competition in the consumer-fi wireless space.

I've been an audiophile for about 20 years now and I just picked up a pair... for no other reason, than I find my Airpods Pro perfectly acceptable and enjoyable, more than I would have expected for such a product, and if these can pull off a similar feat, they will be totally worth it IMO.

I guess people need the dopamine hit from staying home for weeks/months
Just because you’re not willing to pay for this product why are you going through the whole thread chastising people that are. Are you one of those that gets jealous when others have things that you want but can’t afford ?Or is it because you have no understanding of the audiophile market and therefore are not the intended market ?

To expensive they are not for pro’s this is for everyday people and they wouldn’t spend £550 for headphones

Enjoy your new purchase and the 10 minutes dopamine from it mate
Oh, I didn't buy a pair of these yet, as I already have a fantastic pair of headphones. But I LOVE music, and the best part of amazing headphones is that you can get a true dopamine hit every single time I listen to something I love. No shame in that at all. I'm eager to try these Airpods Max out at some point, too, but I'll probably wait until I can demo them in person.

Good headphones are truly the gift that keeps on giving. I like to spend money on things that bring me pleasure, joy and comfort, and headphones can do that especially well, again and again. If that makes me some hedonistic psycho, then so be it

"So... Tim.. yeah... so we can't make the new AirPods the same color blue as the iPhone 12 Pro."
"Well they can't be the same blue as the 12 and 12 mini, we need to give the pro more value."
"I could just make them a new shade of blue."
"I'll issue a press release."

BREAKING NEWS: APPLE INVENTS SKY BLUE!

That's funny, but consider that anodizing aluminum in specific shades of blue with the quality and consistency that Apple would demand is extremely difficult compared to other colors. I know some people that manufacture some parts for a large company (not Apple) that you've all heard of in a very specific shade of blue and they have never ending problems with quality. They are constantly switching between the small handful of anodizers in North America capable of it, but none of them can keep doing it over the long term (machinery issues).

I'd suggest that it is likely that the sky blue color is going to always be in short supply compared to others.

These do not appeal to audiophiles though....
Agreed on the audiophile (lack of) appeal.

My Bowers & Wilkins P7's cost $399.00 list. My P9's (now discontinued) cost about $900.00 when first introduced. The new AirPods Max's cost fall somewhere in between. Some really high end "audiophile" headphones go sky high.

I can wait until my friends at https://www.head-fi.org/forums/ get a hold of this news:p

That said I'll be watching the Apple refurb. store ;)

Update: Off to the races on Headfi.org! Enjoy!

my Sony MX4 are great and I dont feel the need for anything else but I have a feeling these will also sound great with some new apple technology as well as look fashionable and futuristic in person and we will all end up drinking the kool Aid once again. there will be forums and debates about buying these and keeping them for 10 years instead of the old style plastic crap from other brands and $550 will be promoted as a steal in comparison to other tech and materials. Hmmm I think I convinced myself

Why are people surprised, a new product- essentially- they are not going to produce units for immediate sale like they would a new iphone.

Im sure all 500 people will be very happy.
