Engraving is just a way to lower resale value, so Apple is all for it
I think it's fine in this case, since people generally aren't reselling AirPods? At least I know I wouldn't (knowingly) buy 2nd hand ones.Engraving is just a way to lower resale value, so Apple is all for it
Not wrong. How many other companies control the hardware, software and OS the way Apple does?“Something only Apple could do”
I got mine engraved with my name and that did not appear when I connected my AirPods Pro 2 today. So I believe it’s only emojis and memogis like the article mentions. Just wanted to let people know that personal words or names don’t show up on the phone.
Customers who personalize their second-generation AirPods Pro charging case with an engraving will now have that engraving reflected directly on iOS as they pair and connect their AirPods Pro.

Apple allows customers to personalize their AirPods Pro charging case with a special engraving that can include select emojis and Memojis. Unlike before, starting with the second-generation AirPods Pro, that engraving is now reflected on the digital case on iOS as a user pairs and connects their AirPods Pro.
The second-generation AirPods Pro began arriving to customers today. The new AirPods Pro include better Active Noise Cancellation, the new H2 chip, and an updated charging case with deeper Find My integration and a lanyard loop.

Know it alls are a major pain. the team who works on syncing the engraving process to the serial number of the AirPods box so that your engraving shows up on phone may have an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT skill set from those who fix bugs written in Objective-C or Swift. So this idea that their resources were wasted on the engraving technology instead of fixing bugs is just insane. It’s like making the argument “why are cleaners vacuuming on the 7th floor when they could be deep in a Sev1 memory bug???”. Apple’s a 2 trillion dollar company that is incredibly desirable for most software developers to spend a while at, they can get WHOEVER they want, they just run out of time for a strict release cycle. Fair or not, for us to decide but stop this silliness that coding resources were wasted on engraving rather than on bug fixes.Ah, that's literally what they were working on or the feature wouldn't even be here. The best you can do is to claim that they did not neglect fixing bugs.
My name showed up. I used capital letters (which it defaulted to), but, yeah, my name is showing clear as day.I got mine engraved with my name and that did not appear when I connected my AirPods Pro 2 today. Like janitors stepping in for MDs if needed. More cross-training is needed. One team for UI things like this, another for other aspects of iOS. I would believe that. It's a real shame they don't have the ability to move people between teams, though, because the bugs could really use more attention.
I imagine it does phone home. This is probably using the same mechanism apple used to look for counterfeit devices - look up some serial numbers in a database to authenticate the device. And if it has an engraving in Apple’s database, that gets downloaded and displayed on the screen.I'd be interested im how that data gets to your phone. Is it saved in the airpods, when they are engraved (unlikely), or do they phone home when you first pair them?
Absolutely not. They’re specifically working on picking out single MR members that make accounts just to complain about the company, and purposely putting bugs on their phones. So that's what the iOS team was working on instead of fixing bugs before iOS 16 release.

It’s all digital. Not sure how human error would come in outside an order being shipped to the wrong person. A file is generated when you place your order, and that file goes to the digital printer/engraver.I’m pretty sure there will be an error somehow and somebody is going to get the images wrong.
