They aren't going to do any colours only white. A pair of Airpords, and now the new AirPods Pro,, are so iconic they just scream Apple everywhere you see them. It's the white that does it. Colours would lessen the impact.
What exactly makes them "iconic"? They are not very good looking and sound quality is average at best. Apple fans like to think they are "iconic" probably to justify the price they pay for them. Nobody else think they are iconic.

Tube TVs for all of those decades did a lot more damage than AirPods.

Great logic. Thing X isn't as bad as Thing Y, so... nothing matters? Please.

The sad/lame thing here is that 1) Apple makes such a huge show of being "green" and 2) if they figured out a way to just make the battery removable and replaceable, millions of pairs of AirPods could be kept usable and out of landfill. But that would probably make them a few millimeters larger or a gram heavier, and we can't have that. Instead, everyone has accepted that after 18-24 months, you basically throw the whole glued-together package of plastic and electronics completely into the trash. The only "green" here is the money Apple makes off of it.

OMFG.

So much drama.
Headphones don’t turn into garbage after 18 months any more than phones do.

the battery will get weaker over time. Instead of getting three hours of life you will get two hours. Eventually the batteries might swell and destroy the pods. I had this happen on an iPhone once, after it was nearly FIVE YEARS OLD.

You say the sound quality is average best...might I ask where have you have a chance to listen to them already?

OK, Just picked mine up at lunchtime (in Brisbane, AU) and I'm surprised at the amount of noise cancellation on a busy street, it's pretty scary!.

For reference, I've been using Gen 1 AirPods since release to cycle to work every day (never had an issue with them falling out or sweat related mishaps!) and Beats Studio 3 at work and flights.

I always found the Beats sound not quite as 'excited' as the AirPods which I really missed. However, bass at low volume and sound was great. Recently did a trip to the UK and wore them pretty much the entire trip. The bass on the AirPods Pro is slightly less at lower volume but really punches perfectly for me at louder volumes.

I work in an office and I can hear a lot less with these on compared to the Beats. The clicks on my keyboard as I am typing are more like little clip clip clip sounds.

I'm finding the new controls on the AirPods Pro a bit clunky, but I'm sure I'll get used them. I think the old 'whack the ear' when riding my bike will be probably easier than the squeeze, but then again, these now have the Hey Siri, so maybe I need to get onto that so that when winter comes again I won't be knocking them out my ears with gloves on!

Supposed 'audiophiles' will say what the want about them, but it's also personal - no two people have the same set of ears. Are they expensive? You bet. Are they comfortable, fit in with your phone super easy and keep a tiny form factor? Yup.

These are the headphones I've been waiting for, so will sell my Powerbeats Pro and get a pair of these I think. I don't need 9 hours of battery life from them - the main reason for switching was the in-ear factor as AirPods just don't stay in for me.

Thanks for the short review; How is the call quality? I'm concerned because of the smaller stem, my voice would not carry through during a call as loud as in regular AirPods..

Finally got home after work, gym and dinner to my new AirPods Pro. Default seal are perfect for my ears, after having to adjust the left one a bit and re-run the seal test (in Bluetooth > AirPods (i) ).

Have run a few tracks from my HomePod reference playlist and they sound fantastic. Clearly better than the AirPods with deep bass where it drops in in Say Something (although the very start sub bass gets cut off). Podcasts also sound natural without any of the “voices in your head” effect you can get from in-ears.

It sounds better with ANC on rather than Transparency to me. I can’t comment on the ANC just yet because I’m alone with the cats in my apartment. But I’m pretty happy with them so far.

The case is slightly bigger, but not enough to make a difference in practice. The lid is a bit looser than I’d like, but it still snaps shut with a satisfying twack.

I’ll probably give more thoughts on them tomorrow with commute and work putting them through its paces.

Arrived 10am London-time, express delivery from DHL. Got a good fit with the out of the box medium buds. A little thing but loved the attention to detail of “fit test” feature. Do feel a bit weird at first because of their bulbousness. Sound is just wow compared to my first-gen’s. Well done Apple. Now going to try in gym where they play music I don’t like, so let’s see how the cancellation works (and dealing with my sweat - yikes).

I really love my Airpods 1. Gen but I‘m not sure if I should switch to the new Airpods Pro. I mainly use the Airpods for workout at the gym (nearly every day) and for some flights, but that‘s only 2-4 times a year. The also charge us here in germany roundabout 280€ (what is roundabout 310$).
So I‘m really not sure if I should switch or not... maybe someone has the same problem or has some advice for me.

Doesn’t sound like you have a problem to solve.

Can fill you in on my situation. I love my AirPods gen 1 first day purchase. Having worn them for commutes, work, travel, gym and even swimming, pretty much all the time since I got them the battery is wearing down. I still love them, but I now get the sad noice even after 30 minutes wear with Google Hangout meetings, or about an hour with music/podcasts. They were a perfect fit for me, sounded good (although needed semi-regular cleaning).

I love over ear headphones, and as a DJ I use B&O H6 - which I consider the gold standard for audio quality (even using them as a second monitor for music production). I have no experience with ANC headphones at all.

I also have an on/off again relationship with in-ear buds. I bought the first “pro” Apple In-Ear headphones and ended up not using them very much at all. I found some that I really loved and used them for a few years. But all in ears have bugged me in a few ways: the oddness of isolating yourself from the world, the way voices sound like they come from the center of your head, and of course the cable bumps echoing through your cranium.

None of those last issues seem to be a problem with these at all. There’s the transparency mode which seems to work well without blocking the world out, the venting stops the isolation, and ANC kills the outside world and makes the sound quality even better. Best of all they feel good and are quick to insert. They’re still a bit awkward getting out, with sometimes inverting the tip, but that’s an easy fix. I’ll need a few days with them to see if they’re as easy to get in and out as my AirPods or if the cons there outweighs the pros.

For me, having skipped the gen 2 and the PowerBeats it’s a no-brainer. I was skeptical about the in-ear form factor, but so far it’s been great. Great sound. Great comfort. Great value.

One thing I don't understand is why Apple switched from a tap to a squeeze for changing the song and pausing. It seems so much less intuitive.
Read an article that said with it already jammed in your ear, they didn’t want any action that could potentially push it further. I’m willing to try something different, but I did enjoy “tap tap” to skip songs. Wouldn’t even have to tap the Pod, I could tap my pinna and get the same result.

I'll keep the powerbeats pro there are times that having the ear hooks and the physical controls will be preferable, like when I'm mountain biking or running a snow blower with my head completely covered up.

WoW....

Now I know why I left these forums.....I read most of this thread, so much negativity and BS passed around.
I'll move on and enjoy my new AirPod Pros without the drama, just like I did for 3-years with my Gen 1 Airpods.

For those they got them, please enjoy and forget all this drama.....
I just joined this forum because I just ordered an iPhone for the first time (Android user).

I ordered the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Apple Watch 5 SS, and Airpods Pro. I currently use the Note 10+, Galaxy Watch 46 mm, and Galaxy Buds (not a Samsung fanboy at all, just my current setup).

Like you I have read most of this thread and it really is rough.

First 30 min. impressions:
  • Sound is fine. I never had the original AirPods, and I do have a really nice headphones set up at home, so I wasn’t expecting to blown out of the park. I was hoping they would be a bit more impressive but they’re fine.
  • Transparency mode and noise cancellation are both extremely useful. Transparency mode has been super useful walking around campus, and I’m kinda blown away when I turn on noise cancellation and can just tune out the world.
  • Gestures/fake button thing is a little awkward. We’ll see if it gets better.
  • They’re very comfortable and natural feeling.
  • Pairing was really convenient. Again, this is my first time ever wearing any kind of AirPods so even when I was expecting it to connect immediately, I was still caught off guard at them just working right away.
