What doesn't work if your'e not on 13.2?
Surely they work as normal bluetooth headphones on non-iOS devices (and sub 13.2 iOS devices).

What's the skinny on what is limited by iOS version requirements?
From what I read 13.2 is needed for some of the features (maybe all and the entire AirPod?) to work. I think that sub 13.2 iOS does not have the controls, and features or even ability to connect to the new AirPods but that at very least the controls allowing it to work the sound cancelation to transparent modes is needed if it even connects to a sub 13.2 iOS device.

From what I read that is why 13.2 popped so fast yesterday so folks could even use these new airpods

Apple did the right thing. I can't stand wires anymore. I can't work out in the gym with wired headphones. The wires snag on clothing and pull when you move and come out. Sometimes they have pulled my ears where it hurts.

Wireless is the future. You don't need to buy Apple's options. I tried many other options, but the AirPods worked for me best.

If I didn't have money to afford AirPods, I could have run the wires for the headphones under my shirt. But I didn't like doing that every day. Very annoying. It's worth it not to.

For my job as a football referee, I need to run the radio transmitter wires under my shirt, and that's a pain. I wish there was a better solution to that. Those wires still snag occasionally under my shirt. And it takes a good 5 minutes (with help) to run them every time.

I find it amusing that you think that you couldn't go wireless UNTIL Apple removed the headphone jack.

Part of the problem is that most of the alternatives are so darn bad by comparison. Windows 10? Hell no. Android? Hell no. Even though Tim Apple is making it tougher to justify sticking with Apple, where else is there to go at this time?
Hence my statement regarding the mouse and the cheese.

@rjjacobson Thank you for that. I'd be surprised if they didn't work at all without iOS 13.2, but to your point, like with previous AirPods, there are simply features that only work with the lates OS versions.

I wonder if we’d all still complain if Apple decided to take some of the iPhone 11 Pro precedent to the extreme and stopped including/producing EarPods, stickers and Lighting to 3.5mm adaptors in iDevices to absorb the engineering and development costs associated with the AirPods Pro? Component costs aren’t everything...

Let’s be honest with ourselves—anything above and beyond EarPods is a luxury and not a necessity. If you think they’re too expensive (because we’re all experts in what goes in to making tiny noise cancelling headphones), don’t buy them. If you want them and can’t afford them, re-prioritize what you spend money on and you’ll probably realize you don’t actually need them—since nobody actually needs them.

Sure, the world isn’t fair, but neither Tim Cook nor Apple are trying to bring you down. They removed the headphone jack, and included an adaptor while updating the connector on the freebie headphones. Like any company, they introduced a product to give their customers more options, but they didn’t alienate anyone. It’s not their responsibility to subsidize nice-to-have items just because they might be out of your reach.

I find it interesting that you and several others interpreted my post as anything other than a factual observation. I commented neither on my ability to afford them nor on the impact it has on me personally.

The removal of the headphone jack saves Apple money, and opens up a several new revenue streams at the same time.

From a profit perspective, it's brilliant.

You clearly know nothing about the headphone market so you’re not the target audience for these so I wouldn’t sweat it

Actually I used to sell headphones so it was literally my job to be on top of the market. People can do what they want with their money, but over $300 for audio equipment should get you something that lasts more then two years. Am I saying these won’t be popular? No. But its disingenuous to say that these are even considered high end or offer more then $225 more value then Airdots (which are also true wireless earbuds with tiny batteries that will die in a few years).

Unfortunately so much of Apple's appeal is wrapped up in status and lust now that many in the demographic simply can't fathom the concept that something very expensive from Apple may not be "high end" and "worth every penny".

So many have fallen for "it's very expensive and thus it must be the best and certainly worth it".

Apple has won the brain game with so many people.
Marketing is amazing

Jesus Christ. Moan moan moan. You sound like you want them but can’t justify the price.

Competitor products have similar pricing.
If you can’t afford them or justify the cost then pass on it but Christ..... so much drama.

I took my family to a relatively affordable restaurant Saturday. Three entrees, one beer, soft drinks and a kid’s meal. $96 with tip. Could have gone to McDonald’s and fed everyone for $12 off the dollar menu but don’t hate myself that much.

Oh no! Did I offend your favorite company (by pointing out that they're profit driven) so you had to come to their defense like a knight in expensive armor? Such drama indeed!

And how DARE you besmirch the name of the venerable McDonald's! When you want a Big Mac, nothing else will do. Even Tony Stark wanted a BK double cheeseburger.

But seriously, it's cool if you want to blow $250 on some (again, very, very nice) headphones.

If you can afford it, go for it. Buy the most expensive car and biggest, most expensive mansion you can afford while you're at it. And the yacht, get the yacht. The biggest one they make. It doesn't matter that you don't need it. I mean, you earned it, right?

Live a little!

Recently learned that Jony Ive did not want an audio jack in the first iPhone! Not sure how he imagined users would listen to music since Bluetooth audio was very sh*tty at the time. Given Job's penchant for wireless solutions, I imagine he was on board but it has taken this long to achieve the required engineering.
If true, Jony Ive is a dummy for that.

Like I said before, the existence of the headphone jack does not preclude anyone from going wireless.

Apple was working on a kickass pair of headphones. They drive adoption by taking the jack out of their devices, including the adapter for a gen, then removing it, and selling the adapter going forward.

They really know their customers. We're obsessive, we want everything to be Apple-branded.

Not everyone will bite, but a significant number will, and now they have even more products to bite into.

Again, brilliant.

sony wf-1000xm3 $228 on Amazon --These have ANC and are the ones to beat, + they are cheaper than Apple. Lets see how the Apple ones sound...

The Sony have no sweat proofing, fit is suspect and sound quality is average. So, I agree they are the ones to beat but I hope and expect that for $250, they will. If they can't top a very mediocre sony product, then back they go.

So now, when Apple updated a product. They will just add Pro to it and increase the price? :)

I guess the next update Airpods will be Airpods Xpro. :)

Can someone please explain what is "PRO" about these?

A few new features...

BOOM! Just like that got my shipping email for tomorrow delivery!!! Can't wait!

And it's coming UPS. That's interesting. Don't they usually ship these things Fedex?

True, I guess that's something. With my AirPods v1 I couldn't do that.
You could on Series 1, it just didn’t have the “Hey Siri” voice activated functionality. You could configure it such that a double-tap invokes Siri, then say “Set volume to 50%”. You have to speak out loud to the world, but when biking/running, that’s not as much of a problem as, say, in a quiet office.

Since I have an Apple watch, I set double tap to “skip to the next song” and used my watch for volume control. Until I got a watch, though, double tap was for Siri.

I was a few hours late to make the Wednesday delivery cutoff it seems. Placed my order yesterday at 2:58pm EDT (showing Thursday 10/31 for delivery), and got my notice that it had shipped this morning at 5:20am. However, UPS still isn't showing anything for the tracking number when I try to track it on their site.

I think you are confusing airpods vs Sony........Airpods are average sounding earbuds.

I just bought the PowerBeats Pro, and I don't know if I should return them for these?
My Brother got the PowerBeats Pro (on sale currently) and he was dismayed that something new came out so close to his purchase... until he remembered that he just doesn’t like the AirPods form factor, so now he’s fine :) If you’re within 14 days and you’re sitting on the fence, Apple will accept your return, no questions asked. Then, check out the reviews and purchase the one you want. Of course, if you got the PowerBeats at a discount, you may want to be careful as the sale may expire.

I misinterpreted your intent and see your point now that its not about what you think about the price, but rather Apple's strategy that has led up to today--especially considering the iPhone 7 and 1st generation AirPods were released together.

Do you think AirPods (all generations) would have been as popular if Apple hadn't removed the headphone jack? What I can't understand is the removal of the headphone jack shouldn't have really affected people who were already using Bluetooth headphones, and the people who were still using wired headphones don't seem like the demographic to jump straight past mid- to low-tier Bluethooth headphones in favor of AirPods for their first pair... But we/they did! Maybe it was all mental jujitsu.

Thanks for re-directing me.

Pro. Laughable. Higher tech shouldn’t cost more money. Pro should not mean “more advanced technology.” I shouldn’t have to pay more for a house with more bathrooms or heated floors.
I'm sure your builder would love to give you added, more expensive features such as additional bathrooms or heated floors, for free. Yeah, that's the ticket.
