Funny all these "under promise, over deliver" comments. Given TC is the god of supply chain management and would not on purpose be so off on estimated/actual ship dates unless by design other theories are a lot of cancelled orders could be:
1) because Apple was just punking everyone on actual stock to gin up sales but then reality that these are not the "Jesus Buds" in the was the iPhone was the "Jesus Phone." Even Rene Richie says they don't sound any better than $10 EarPods. These are geek buds at this point -- weighted to tech wizardry rather than great sound. Plenty of other great sounding BT buds at the $150 price point.
2) eBay profit margins are turning out to be slim with pairs selling for $250 because demand is OK, but not off the hook. Take out eBay and Paypal's cut and the seller is left with $40-50. Would be nice if they had hundreds of pairs to sell, but 1-2 why bother? And also on that note, a lot of people seem to be buying these just to resell them, hoping for big bucks.
AirPods are shipping faster than expected but were released later than expected so, truly, how is that under promise, over deliver? Apple just about missed Xmas with these. To me that is over promise, under deliver.
And then, reviews are these are OK, not revolutionary buds. Again, how is that over deliver?
This is not to say they are not worth the money or can't be enjoyed. I'm not saying that. I'm saying Apple missed a true opportunity here to really over deliver and they missed it like they seem to do with everything of late. Let's not appease it with credit it does not deserve. Let's save it for when they do next come out with a really great product.
