Why? If the line isn't profitable, it doesn't matter how much a tiny group loves the product. I love mine too, but that doesn't mean the company should keep it on life support if those engineers would be better served on another project. For all we know, the next AppleTV will have this functionality integrated or something.
That would be insanely stupid in 99% of cases.

Honest question: where the hell are all of Apple's resources going? This is a company with thousands of employees that has exponentially grown over the years so it baffles me that when they were smaller, they had a much more diverse line up of GOOD products that were regularly updated. Now it seems like they are haphazardly updating a few of their products and abandoning the rest. Apple seems kind of lost at the moment.

To be honest, I have two Airport Extremes and I have FIOS as my Internet provider and they provide a router plugged into their fiber optic gateway and it is an Aris piece of junk. I m forced to use my provider's router as it supplies the guide for Fios TV. If I could use another router (Apple) I would. Now I have my Apple Airport extreme plugged into the FIOS router and love it.

IBM was strong and is strong in business IT.
Sony is in a thousand markets.
Samsung owns several companies in several sectors, not only tech.

... Apple?
The discussion starter was about the complaint that Apple might not make anymore Macs.
I pointed out companies that used to make PCs, but decided not to anymore due to market changes.
There are multiple business case studies about IBM's decision. They are strong now BECAUSE of their decision back then to stop making PCs and reinvent themselves.

Apple now has the most powerful and efficient mobile SoC, multiple custom chips. You can see them transitioning, preparing for the possibility of needing to switch business model.

There is nothing "free" about modems from ISPs.
True, but you have to take them whether you like them or not. :(

I have a router connected to my Apple router, and the router from my ISP is in bridge mode. It technically has more features, including 802.11ac, but I just don't like it. Its UI is a mess and it doesn't offer anywhere near the same level of functionality.

I think all the bloggers have overlooked the biggest reason Apple is getting out of the router biz: most every ISP in the country now, or will soon include router and wi-fi capabilities built-in as part of their modem hardware.

Hard to compete with "free"...

ISPs have already been doing that for years. Those access points are garbage and most people know it.

You can find a good solution for 75/109 these days - no reason to pay 199 for a wifi router in 2016. Unless they stripped out all the 39.99 POS wi-fi solutions people buy out there this is meaningless.

You think designing chips only take an intern or two? Go ask intel, and what are they doing with their money.

...which hasn't been updated for years and is incompatible with the more recent models.
Wrong. It will work with the most recent Apple extremes of which I have 2 currently running in my home setup. You should really check your facts before you post definitive statements which are false.

They reinvented themselves based on their strength; for example for IBM the strength was in Business IT.
What is Apple's strength? Products. Simple, easy yet pricey products that can live in an harmonic ecosystem. Remove/reduce the Mac and see what happens.

They were really close to turning it into an extremely useful product. I was actually looking forward to the next revision to see them complete it. It seems the 85% complete rule is set in stone. Get it 85% of the way there, put it out, but instead of doing the last 15% of the work over the next revisions, just kill it.

Another piece of the Apple ecosystem down.

But really profitable.
It is better to sell a subscription than a product that can last for 10 years. And once you put your data on iCloud is even more convenient to have an Apple device, so you stick with their ecosystem.
Sad move for customer, great move for the company

If something is sad for the customer, it will eventually become sad for the company.
Being "another Google" will not work for Apple.

Apple was about the "complete ecosystem", which included:
- Macs
- iOS devices
- Apps
- iCloud
- Apple peripherals (like Time Capsule, Displays, iPhone covers, etc.)

This was good for the customer, thus good for Apple. Not every "part" of this ecosystem is maximum profitable, but the whole is more than the sum of all parts.

Moving towards just iOS and iCloud = Google, oh, and Microsoft.

In the short-term this is all about "maximising profits" (and people will praise Timmy for this), but in the long-term I'm afraid Apple will have to fight for marketshare by... lowering the prices... bye bye, high margins etc.

It's ranked highest in satisfaction as it's one device Apple doesn't have much possibilities to show how much courage they have and totally CRIPPLE the product with their stupidity.

Why they wouldn't keep developing these products -- even with a smaller team and making only incremental improvements over time -- is beyond me. I purchased the airport specifically because it was integrated well with my Macs. If my network is no longer part of the Mac ecosystem, then this simply raises the likelihood that my next hardware purchase will likewise not be part of it either. Another short-sighted decision that fails to recognize that the Apple brand is a holistic one and not about a particular product being thin or light.

Go look at the amount of profits Apple makes from iPhones.
Now go look at the profits of the likes of Acer/Dell/Asus are making.
They are all in IT.
So?

I never said that Apple is a Mac-only company a-la Acer. I said that it's about an ecosystem of which all products, from the iOS devices to the Mac, are an integral part. The Mac in general weights quite a lot on this ecosystem.

Unbelievable. More reason to get Cook out. The entire eco-system is collapsing around him, and he doesn't even realize it!

Getting a product best in class (huge deal) after allegedly discontinuing it?!? I agree with J.D. Power, my Airport AC station is one of the best wireless devices I've ever used. It just works. I do not understand why Apple is pulling out of the Mac ecosystem (Displays, Wireless, Accessories, no update to most of it's product core in years). I'm scared what Cook will discontinue next.

Why Apple Why, why are you doing this to us, First you made us addicted to amazing products and now you stopped refreshing them. (Mac Pro, Imac , and now this )
iMac is almost definitely getting refreshed in the spring when the new high end Kaby Lake processors become available. Mac pro will probably see an update at the same time (maybe). And while it's sad to see this router go, the fact was that it didn't sell well enough to justify future development.

Sad to see this happen. I've used Apple Routers exclusively and have zero issues. Not looking forward to the day this one takes a crap on me. Everyone one I know that uses other brands hates them and has patchy signal throughout their homes.

Go watch Steve Jobs' keynote again when he announced iCloud. He demoted the Mac from the media hub into "just a device." Meaning that in his vision, the Mac is just another device, and should be expendable with the hub being the cloud.
