I've been waiting FOREVER for an update to this model since the current one is 3 years old.
When I heard this news a couple days ago I went out and bought one.
SO SAD!

I don't like that strategy, but we as customers have our vision for the company and I guess it is easy for us to complain and to judge. I do complain a lot of time, but I'm not managing the company and profits are terrific, that's what the board of directors and investors care about. I'm not sure they care about the long run.

Their main source of money today is iOS devices, and iOS relies mainly on iCloud.
Latest macOS version synchronise stuff to iCloud (I believe it is the Document folder, I don't use the feature), and that's the first step into moving everything there.
More profits, more people bound to their ecosystem. I agree with you, that's sad for me and could take me away from the company so sad for them as well, but we "loyal" Mac users are now a minority of their customer base.

True, but as consumers we can at least judge the products and their trends. They are not good. iPhone 7 is just an iPhone6++ without a jack. MBP with touchbar is a laughingstock especially for that price point. Remaining Macs lineup is struggling. Apple Watch is allright, but not the next "big thing". iCloud is so and so. Apple TV 4... i like it but it's far from 'good'. iPads... I love my 12" but I don't see the need for separating between iPad and iPad Pro. Siri is way behind.
It's NOT good.

They can't and they haven't been for some time. The Mac Pro is languishing, the rest of the Mac line-up receives mediocre updates with outdated specs, customers are leaving in droves. Meanwhile Apple is focusing on diversity & harmony, being a fashion company, parading exec's around to do damage control for their hardware mistakes (see Phil Schiller recently) and designing "Minimalist" Christmas, scuse me, Holiday decorations and self-indulgent photobooks.
I'm sorry, but if you think having the most powerful and efficient mobile SoC on the market today is not innovation, then I'm glad you are not working for Apple.

This is the first time I've ever felt legitimate outrage over an Apple announcement.

At the discontinuation of Displays, they announced LG as an alternative. With this, no alternatives or suggestions at all.

I see lots of scary complaints about all off brand routers and none of them include a Time Machine drive as far as I can tell.

Our Time Capsule is getting old and I am not sure what to do.

This is not an announcement and is ALL based on a rumor.

If rumor is true - people have been moved onto another project
This Happens all the time!!
Said new project may be the Muted Siri Speaker which 'May' have Router abilities
Also Next gen Router 'May' already be designed and ready to go.
What would happen to Time Capsule - 2TB is not something that can be easily clouded.

Apple Press Release
January 1, 2017

Starting at the first Apple event this year, we will have a "One More Thing..." at the end. Not only that, we will have one at every Apple event this year! That's right, the iPad event, WWDC, the iPhone event and the Mac event will have "One More Things..." as well! Only this year, we will be announcing a beloved product we will no longer be manufacturing. Just wait until you see who we are partnering with to make our stuff! 2017 will be magical!

Though their wireless routers were both profitable and highly rated, Apple's inability to make them thinner or secure a cross-licensing deal with HERMES sealed their fate.

Where does the focus need to be on?

the apple watch that is stagnant?

the ipad that is continuously losing sales?

the imac which hasnt been updated in years?

Interesting. I have found my Netgear Nighthawk performs much better than my Time Capsule. The problem with this survey is that it encompasses the $49 special that you can buy at Wal-Mart, which drags the scores down for others I am sure. The Nighthawk was as expensive as an Airport Extreme, but the range is much better and has not needed a reboot in almost a year now.

I actually just purchased the nighthawk and found it to be performing worse than my Airport. The range is fantastic, but the speed just seems to way slower than the Airport, what settings do you have yours on if you don't mind me asking. I do have the dual 5ghz bands in one band and I have it set to have the router automatically swapping the devices on that network between the two different 5ghz networks.

You may know this, but many Mac users don't. Apple don't communicate this, so it is an issue.
Exactly. It's like Apple Pay, so many people still don't know what it is despite this being advertised by Apple. Every time I pay with my phone people in line or the cashier thinks it's some sort of app you download through your bank.

And how many people out there think the Apple TV is an actual TV? Many many because I always had to explain it.

Some people don't even know what iCloud is!

With this in mind, I always got "Apple made routers???" With a dumbfounded look. They didn't market these well at all.

the one more thing is a train wreck. Only steve jobs can do that and it's jumped the shark.

call it dead. apple don't ever do a 'one more thing' again

This is a bit misleading. Apple router ranks highest among the old technology routers. They should include eero and other mesh networking routers. WAY BETTER experience. I know, I switch from Apple routers to mesh and am super happy. I still have the time capsule for backup, but disabled the wifi router component.
For $500 I would hope eero is better.

Well, actually from "One More Thing" we're moving towards "No More Things"

Well, what kind of update would you need from a router? This "old" version still supports 802.11ac and gigabit ethernet. Until a faster wireless standard is finalized, there's really nothing else to add frankly.
It's the same thing on previous versions, Apple only make new ones to simply adopt faster wireless standards.

Apple's product rankings are getting lower and lower these days, so they decided to remove the one product people actually liked and rated well.

The board NEEDS to remove Tim Cook before it's too late.

Apple under Jobs was something else. Tim has been "succeeding" off his legacy, however as Job's magic is drying up, so is Apple.

The man is a liability with no vision. No charisma. No passion. Nothing.

#FireTimCook
If Apple gets to that point again like they did back in the day, I wonder what they would do next. You can't turn back to Steve Jobs this time.

I'm not happy either, and I can tell you I stick with their ecosystem just because I'm an iOS app developer.
I really like iOS but I'm disappointed by the Mac, I would have moved to some other vendors and used Linux if I didn't need macOS for my job

It wouldn't be so stupid if Apple offered more iCloud storage for free. Like, buy a 1TB Mac, get 1TB iCloud included, or buy 128GB iPhone, get 128GB free.

The problem is: try to backup 1TB from the cloud, especially if you really really need it. iCloud and TimeCapsule offer two similar, yet very different, purposes.

It really does stink. Maybe they don't make a huge profit on routers but I live and breath the Apple ecosystem and for me Airport Express, Extreme, and Time Capsule over the years have been very reliable, easy to integrate solutions for my home.

I won't claim that something like this would make me stop buying Apple products but things like this (and killing the automation team, getting out of monitors etc.) are what begins the long slippery slope. Apple is still 100% on top of the market but so was Microsoft once upon a time and no one is too big to fail.
