Apple trying to solve a problem that isn't even a problem. The killer feature is the ability to place devices in any orientation and order on the mat, and they'll still charge. Have we become so pampered that we can't place our devices on a mat in the right place?

If Apple is having overheating issues, that tells me that the mat is massively inefficient at converting input energy into actual recharge energy in the devices, likely due to the overlapping charging rings, which in turn means either a bigger power brick or a slower charge rate. even when compared with other wireless charging mats.

The crazy thing is that Apple could have produced a regular multi-device charging mat with the ability to charge an Apple watch, and the Apple faithful would have bought it in droves.
Ding ding ding we have a winner best reply yet

There is no news. Article might as well have been about the Apple Car not being launched in 2018 and rumored to be launched someday.
You're being disingenuous. It is news when Apple announces a product, provides a timeframe for delivery, and fails to do so. It's magnified by their silence on the subject. This is definitely out of the ordinary and not something that Apple typically does. So to pretend as if it's not news is a protestation that rings hollow.

Apple didn't announce a Car or a date associated with said unannounced car. Not a good analogy.

I’m not sure. I have an iPhone 6S and don’t intend to upgrade at these ridiculous prices nowadays. So, whenever I do, I’ll be in the market for a wireless charger. I’m sure lots of people are holding out. And true Apple fans will still buy it when it’s released.

But it doesn’t really matter. It’s just a charger and market share isn’t relevant. I find the HomePod and Apple entering the smart home a far bigger failure of 2018. If Alexa and Google Assistant become the defacto standard every third party device supports, then Apple has already lost.

Apple has never been the "de facto standard" for any of its products, nor does it want to be. There are over 1.5 billion Apple devices in use worldwide, and those users are more likely to use Siri and HomeKit than the alternatives.

The article does not provide anything new that hasn't already been rehashed a dozen times in similar articles over the past year. That is the analogy that is lost on you.

what are those ? im not price sensitive

I have one of these. Nice combination with iPhone - I’m not about the specs

I'm looking forward to seeing AirPower come out. I am looking for a charger to charge my phone and also my AW S4. So far, none of the 4 chargers I've tried off Amazon that are cheaper can do it. They're all junk

They are not junk - they cannot offer the feature of AirPower though , but neither can AirPower for now . You can compare what is available to hardware made on promises.

None of those are truly wireless anyway , as in contact is still needed , it’s really “contactless” charging

Earlier articles were speculating Apple may not deliver. It was still 2018 so there was still a chance of the product hitting the market. The calendar finally rolled over so it's now official. The product missed the launch window... which is what the article is reporting. Outside of missing the launch window, there's nothing new to report because Apple has gone silent. That can't be blamed on the reporting. As I said, to pretend Apple missing a product launch is not news is disingenuous. As you stated in a different post, you can't really name another time it happened.

Hum... read the article, maybe?

You don't have to have them tell you. There's such thing as circumstantial evidence. Apple is hiring people to work on wireless power. There are still references to AirPower in new products. If it were cancelled, they've had plenty of time to remove those references or not add them at all to new products and they wouldn't be hiring people to work on it.
Apple hasn’t made an official announcement of any kind. There are some references in software for other products that MAY mean something or may just be leftover references that haven’t yet been removed. There hasn’t been any official announcements about the AirPower pad.

I understand that what they are trying to do is technically difficult. No one else has released a pad where you can place a phone/watch/iPad anywhere and in any order and it will charge. I believe all of the multi component charging pads require you to place a specific item on a specific part of the pad for it to work. If it was easy one of those other suppliers would already have a place anywhere pad for sale.

But this secrecy BS needs to stop.

If it’s been canceled say so.
If you don’t know if the technical issues can be solved but Apple is still working on it then say so.

Not saying anything isn’t better than giving an honest status. This is similar to their battery fiasco. Had they said up front what the IOS update would do and the consequences of turning on the slowdown feature vs not turning it on they they would have been better served.

Instead they decided not to say what they did or why.

This isn’t some secret product that Apple has never admitted exists but a formally announced product that was promised within a specific time frame. They don’t need to go into details but they should say whether or not the product development is dead or not.
Are they legally required to say anything? No. Is it bad PR? Yes, especially on top of other problems Apple has had with keyboards and homepods and software features.

The secrecy may be legal but that doesn’t mean it’s smart.

Overpriced != Premium

We all know Cook's Apple.

You can call it whatever you want. But anyone that would try to make the argument that Apple doesn’t have better product quality than most similar products on the market is just not being very genuine.
And anyone that’s been to business school would recognize that Apple clearly is not differentiating themselves on price. They are differentiating themselves in quality of product, and perception of product superiority. It’s up to consumers to decide if that quality difference justifies the price difference. Ridiculing it, or calling it names... doesn’t really do anything to help the conversation, other than make you personally feel better about your decisions I guess.

Exactly. Not to stray off topic, but the XR in every storage size is less expensive than the comparable 6S/7 Plus models were priced.

6S / 7 didn't release with outdated tech.

There is nothing "superior" in latest Apple products, except their marketing clearly, more like late technology, some a bit more polished some hardly "superior", some other stripped to cut corners & downgraded like the Mac line. MacOS is still better than windows and thats what's left, but it's been stagnant for years and Microsoft is catching up.

Shiny chasis with mediocre hardware won't do for long, also many of these devices they may look great to you, but they offer poor reliability / longevity, and don't forget you can always get Apple Care for the full girlfriend / boyfriend experience.

Do you have any you can recommend? I assume the feature of AirPower you mention is just the ability to place it wherever on the pad? I don't care about that so much as the ability for it to just work, even if phone and watch have dedicated spots.

Is this product really such a big deal? Pretty much every company in existence has charging mats for sale, in every size and shape imaginable. Apple may have painted themselves into a corner, realizing they couldn't make this product worth the premium over competitors.

We're the only ones who care. Apple isn't going to say if they're having technical trouble finishing a product that only tech nerds have heard about. If they had cancelled it, there's a high liklihood that they would have leaked it to the tech press so it could be over with and nobody would talk about it ever again. The fact that they haven't and they're actually hiring new specialists in wireless power and filing new trademarks for AirPower is more than enough evidence that this isn't dead.

Wasn't one of the other things about it that you could place your devices anywhere on the mat to charge? Current mats have specific points you have to align your device to if you want them to charge. Maybe I'm wrong.
Current Qi chargers also don't handle Apple Watch charging and might have a problem with the AirPods case too. Apple's AirPower would deal with all of the issues raised with their own proprietary device charging. It might also have a steep price for handling all those issues in one device.

Perhaps their market research revealed that people weren't interested in paying (rumored) $150 for a charger to replace the chargers they already got with their devices.

It's a big deal for a few reasons:
  • It will charge various Apple devices at the same time. I don't know any other mat that does this?
  • It is a first party adapter. Usually these are built to better specs for the devices they build.

Do you have any you can recommend? I assume the feature of AirPower you mention is just the ability to place it wherever on the pad? I don't care about that so much as the ability for it to just work, even if phone and watch have dedicated spots.
Sorry - I’ve gone back to my mechanical watch so only need one mat for my wireless and like the Orée, cause it is class

I don't think is has something to do with hardware and software with Apple releasing this product. I just can't imagine what causes them any trouble in putting this product together. I think the only reason why Tim is having trouble releasing is the pricing. There's no way Apple will be selling this for $79 that's a tough sell and I don't think Tim would sell this below $129. This is where Apple starting to struggle, pricing their product when people started to notice how ridiculous it is.

AirPower really didn't catch my interest when Apple originally announced it back in 2017. At this point, I have a Anker wireless charger for my Xs that suits my needs perfectly.

While I'm sure AirPower isn't dead, it's definitely on life support.

It does seem kind of odd that a company with unlimited financial resources and access to some of the cleverest minds on the planet would be scuppered by a charging mat.

These cleverest minds always knew this concept wouldn't make compelling meaning for phones. Only MacRumors and a lot of other people here hailed that zeitgeist crap. Not smart, not efficient, terrible ecobalance, just a questionable tablecloth...

Nobody would spend a lot of money on such bells and whistles either. I am happy for Apple that this thing is finally dead.
(I hope so. But still there are non-technical marketing guys in powerful positions at Apple.)
