People here have been clamoring for the mid-range xMac since the dawn of these forums. Ain't gonna happen.

Sad really, because it is exactly what I want too.

Pissing match - my 2c

Ok for those of you in a pissing match about the cost and HP, Dell vs Mac Pro, from a video editors point of view I don't see a HP workstation being that much cheaper than a MacPro, expandability aside. Go to the HP site and see how much those workstations are, thousands and thousands of dollars. Some are $10k +

And sure if you're way into After Effects / Alias you're going to have a render farm but for small shops this will be a nice machine at not too bad a price. Sure you can fanny about and build up a machine yourself but 90% + of the population will never do that. And if you want to run Premiere Pro and that works for I'm not sure you'll save much by getting an HP workstation - correct me if I'm wrong here chaps with some real numbers from the website, not some you pulled out of your bumms!

As for me I'm still slumming it running a 2012 Mini with an SSD, 16Gb or ram and can edit anything, even with a 1000+ clip event library on FCPx, (hint proxy is your pal), all on a little machine that cost less that $1000.

Your work can self-pay a $9000 MacPro in 2 days, okay great. How about I could do the same with a $2000 machine? In that case I make $9000 with less so instead of break even I make it profitable already.

But you're likely not getting that work done in 2 days with the $2000 machine. Which I'm guessing is part of his point.

Prosumer audio guy here and thinking of picking up the baseline quad model.

I know I should probably wait a couple of months for the bugs to be worked out (I hope it's not as bad as the 2013 iMac audio issues, still not fixed!), to see what the Mac Mini update looks like as that might be powerful enough, and for NAMM show to see what new thunderbolt/usb3.0 audio interfaces might come out, but it's so tempting...

My 2012 2.6 i7 Fusion Mac Mini just got here and I'll be installing 16GB of memory. It will be the master and my 2011 2.7 i5 27" iMac(where my 200GB of samples are) will be the slave using Vienna Ensemble Pro over ethernet. The iMac will also serve as a monitor for the Mac Mini using Apple Target Display Mode. I have a 1GB NewerTech miniStack for the Mac Mini back up drive and an OWC 2GB Mercery Elite Pro coming for Vienna Ensemble Pro. If needed I'll get another MiniStack to record to. I should be able to use the Mac Mini backup drive also for the recording drive backup for at least awhile.

When my DAW host and sample libraries are actually utilizing those dual GPUs with OpenCL I'll buy a Mac Pro.

I'm with you there, except that I run Premiere instead of FCP. I've been running Lightwave 3D and gobs of CS6 apps on my 2011 quad i7 Mini Server with 16GB of RAM and a couple of 500GB spinny drives, creating full animated commercial spots in 1080p. Problem of late has been in recent jobs I've been animating figures that get close to a million polygons, and dynamic fur effects with wind and gravity. My poor Mini is game but it struggles and render times are killer, even when I farm off some of the work to my i7 MBP as a second render node. I finally brought in enough this year to have some end-of-year hardware cash to spend and it's time to take the plunge and score one of these shiny new MPs.

I think Apple have made an error in not putting in any slots/bays for internal conventional or hybrid SATA drives. Many folks don’t want external storage drives connected by cables hanging off their Mac Pro’s. It rather negates the neat design. Our oldest desktop a 2005 dual 2.3 PowerMac needs to be replaced because it will not run up to date software, such as Photoshop CC, Office 2011 and Intego Internet Security. I think I will be looking for a previous model MacPro 8 core ex-demo model at a good price. That way I can just move the 1.5 TB B and C hard discs with all my images and data back up from the PowerMac over to the new machine in seconds.

How many people who need a 6 core MP would even want their data inside a single desktop computer? If you are buying one of these you likely have a notebook mac and maybe want your data in a location where yo can get to it from either computer.

Keeping data inside a specific computer is really about the worst place for it, unless you only own or use just one computer.

I suppose you think that dishonors the christian holiday of christmas by satirizing a popular tune that honors one of it's non-christian traditions?

The irony is that I am an Orthodox Christian but I am open minded, I think I know why he/she may be insulted by my comment but seriously I never meant to insult Santa Claus or "Saint Billy" as we call him who was invented by coca cola. Honestly I know it s neither funny nor clever but we are on democratic forum. Perhaps if he was the real Santa Claus, then yes I would apologize. :p:)

The Mac is actually cheaper. Add up all the parts and Apple is the lowest priced option. (The big cost drivers are the video and the PCIe Flash storage.

Here is an NY Times article from 1984. It describes the cost of an IBM PC with 256K or RAM (not even one megabyte let alone gigabytes.) this PC cost about $50 MORE then an Apple Mac at the time. Guess the price? was $3,200 just dropped to $2,500. The Mac was about $3K and IBM's "portable" PC sold for about $3K.

People in 1984 paid $3,000 for computers and thought they were getting a "deal". I paid about $$2K because I got a stripped down model with no hard drive. Later I added a $600 hard drive that held 10MB (yes MB, not GB or TB)

Personally, I'd say the idea you went through all that trouble just to gripe about someone's attempt at humor says a lot more about you than about anyone else posting here.

Thanks a lot, I am an Orthodox Christian but I am open minded, I think I know why he/she may be insulted by my comment but seriously I never meant to insult Santa Claus or "Saint Billy" as we call him who was invented by coca cola. I can’t wait for one of these to show up on the desk of some scientist during a PBS science program, or on Morgan Freeman’s “Through the Wormhole.” You know it will happen. It’s just too cool.

It will probably show up in the recording studio on ParentHood first :) I am watching the early seasons, not sure if they still have the studio in the current season :)

I really didn't get what such people found to get all incensed about, but I doubt it was a religious thing, personally. TBH I thought your post was kind of lame, myself, but the idea that it was so terrible as to incite such (IMO) extreme reaction seems kind of silly to me. Again, I think it tells me more about them than about your post.

I have to agree. That was about the least funny and clever post I have seen. I suppose a 10 year old might find it funny. But just changing a couple of words in an entire song demonstrates zero creativity.

Oh come on! Don't be so cruel! I was not taking part in a creative contest! But trust me I am creative when I must be :) Piece

Ok, now we know that they will be available for "pre-order" tomorrow. Next question is "how long before they start shipping"?

The string-along game continues….

yes, it's a conspiracy designed just to torment you. Tim cook is laughing from his castle now...

yes, so sad. a tear escapes my eye for this great, tragic wrongdoing in the cosmos.

I really dislike that Apple does this. But hey, for the price difference you could probably just come down to the US and pick one up here.

It is not Apple, it is your government taxes plus the fact that they have to ship them all the way there and also don't forget that in the US the tax is not shown until a delivery address is selected due to the fact that taxes vary in each state.
