All of the new devices Apple today announced at its "Wonderlust" event feature no battery life improvements at all compared to their direct predecessors.

This comes contrary to a multitude of rumors prior to Apple's event, which suggested that the major efficiency improvements of the S9 and A17 chips would bring battery life improvements. The approximate battery life of each of the new devices Apple unveiled today is as follows:

  • Apple Watch Series 9: 18 hours/36 hours in Low Power Mode
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2: 36 hours/72 hours in Low Power Mode
  • iPhone 15: 20 hours
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 26 hours
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 23 hours
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 29 hours

This is exactly the same as the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Of course, efficiency improvements may still result in slightly better real-world performance in Apple's latest models.

This is a little surprising with all the rumors talking about efficiency.

My guess is that real world battery life will indeed be better, but Apple chose not to update the rated battery life (likely so that that if 2024’s phones dip a little due to larger displays, it won’t seem like a downgrade then)

There’s still a chance it’s longer, the quoted battery life doesn’t always reflect real world. The 13P and 14P had the same quoted battery and yet the 13P lasted longer… every other year it seems to get better then worse in a pattern.

this whole 3nm process is one big disappointment. Only 10% increase in CPU performance. And the 2 year old GPU in the iPhone 15 is only 20% slower while it has 5 instead of 6 cores. No wonder we got so many messed up reports about the 3nm process from TMSC last couple of years, it’s a big fail.

Well yeah. People who were expecting leaps and bounds were mainly fanboys. For anyone paying attention, lithography advances have been getting slower and slower every year. It's physics. 3nm is very much marketing.

Like with previous nodes, Apple had the option of choosing between performance or power. They almost always choose performance (more transistors).
