They don't repair or replace on the spot.

For an iPhone that goes tango uniform, you are stuck waiting for the repair to come back. Never mind you no longer have a phone for a week and cannot call or be called.

As iPhone hardware is very buggy (every iPhone I have ever had has had a factory defect), this is a very lame service.

All Best Buy does is check out the hardware with an Apple diagnostic tool and apologize for leaving you without a phone line for a week while they send it in to Apple. Pure Applesauce

That is not true. Stores have some replacement units and they have parts to replace things like screens and batteries.

I was one of those "Apple certified" techs at the Geek Squad/Best Buy I worked at for 12 years. The training is a joke, you read a few articles and watch a video, then are expected to be able to repair every iPhone that Apple is willing to give you parts for. Forget about same day replacement or loner phones cause that is not going to happen. The few parts that can be replaced in-house are ones that I have hardly ever seen fail, like a speaker or a cellular receiver. Most items are shipped out and your lucky if it takes less then a week to get is back. Some items have a very quick turn around time like Apple TV and sometimes Apple Watch. Your better off just going through Apple, even just mailing it in to them is faster then taking it to a Best Buy, and you will get much better customer service. When anyone in Geek Squad sees an Apple device all they want to do is run and hide cause the process is so horrible, even just to check it in.

The program has changed. If you are an apple certified repair tech you have hands on training and stores have parts like screens and batteries too. They even have units for same day replacements.

Does this mean that now Best Buy will tell me my machine is hopeless by quoting huge dollars only to then suggest a new machine?

I doubt the OP is exaggerating. Every iPhone I owned (three total) were replaced while they were under warranty. Every phone owner I know (notice I didn't say iPhone specifically) has experienced hardware issues.

Electronics are complex. The more complex that something is, the more potential failures. And ekectronics are delicate. Why do you think race cars and rockets require so many handlers and constant observation? Why do you think Apple's stores are packed with repair seekers?
I've owned 3 iPhones and never had hardware issues with any. I've also had a few Android-based phones and only had hardware problems with one of them but it was a really inexpensive phone so I didn't expect much.

But do I trust Best Buy to make a good repair? I don’t know - never had them repair anything before.

That does not matter as long as Apple trusts them...right? Your concern is once you are out of warranty and find out BB used ketchup instead of thermal paste or something similar.

I've had a 1, 3g, 4, 5, 5s, 6, and currently on a 7+ that's just starting to show its' age. No factory defects in any of them and on most of them exceeded their battery spec. You've had some lousy luck. There's no way your experience is anything other than extremely rare.

This has all of a sudden dramatically expanded the Apple Repair Services. An additional 700 repair location is a big improvement. I hope they have more to come. Apple will still need more Apple Stores around the world.

The next Step is trying to replicate this plan around the world. Where Apple's repair services could greatly expand without significantly lowering the brand image and quality of services.

Of course, it would be great if Apple design their product to be extremely durable and easy to repair in the first place.

Why do you just make stuff up and pretend it’s fact?

Clearly states they will perform repairs. Screens, batteries, etc.

Also, enough of your anecdotal “evidence” regarding iPhones being faulty.

Every iPhone you've had you say?... Sounds like you should buy a different brand and move on....

Indeed; I started on an iPhone 3GS, then 5, 5S, 6, 6S, and now 8 Plus. I've never had a failure, defect, or screen crack.

Defects are a bound to happen of course, but I've never bought Applecare because iPhone reliability has been perfect for me.

But a BestBuy employee is not getting anywhere near any of my Apple gear.

I'll request an express replacement under AppleCare+, or just buy a replacement while a unit is being serviced.

BestBuy may help those that are not picky about quality, but it won't help me because BestBuy is the bottom of the barrel to me.

You are the most unlucky person ever or full or it.
Our family have over many, many iPhones and never have any hardware problems within the first few years.

Seriously? Most every iPhone I've ever owned has been replaced at least once. Dead touchscreens, broken camera zoom, dead GPS module, display failures. This is not an uncommon experience.

Tango Uniform, lol

Best Buy bricked my 6s touch ID after a screen repair. Required a few trips to sort out but they got me a next day replacement shipped in from Apple. I learned my lesson though after this and another bad third party experience: best to have Apple repair the phone themselves.

No, there are just people who live in cities that don't have an Apple Store. Or who live on the opposite side of a large city from the nearest Apple Store, so it takes hours in traffic to get there vs. the Best Buy that is only a couple miles away.

i guess i don't know the exact locations of apple stores vs. best buys in all of the major us cities :)
