one thing i really don't like about CarPlay is that it respects the "silent" switch on the phone. i'm one of those people that doesn't like my phone making any noises, and with the watch on or phone in my pocket, the haptics let me know there's a message or some other kind of notification.

when that switch is on silent, despite the fact that i'm streaming music from my phone to the car, Messages does not make a noise when a message is received. thus i miss messages all the time while driving.

i realize this is "working properly" like this but it maybe doesn't make a lot of sense given that the car does not have haptics. you can say "well, just flip the switch when you get in the car" but it's a little silly as i set that switch to silent when i got the phone and never touched it again.

i doubt this was fixed in ios17 but we'll see.
I'm pretty sure you can just set an automation in Shortcuts to toggle Silent Mode when CarPlay connects, though Apple might not have put that in yet... will have to check and report back.

edit: nope, you can only check the state of the button using the Actions for Shortcuts app. I would set Back Tap to toggle the Silent switch and then do a notification to remind you to Back Tap when connecting to CarPlay. About as close to what you want to do with the current Shortcuts. ☹

I just want it to display the track number of the currently playing song (e.g., “track 5 of 12”) as well as more characters in the song’s title.

Their solution is to use announce messages. You won’t miss them but it will drive you insane, especially if you have group messages “in a group with x,y, and n others.” I eventually turned it off and now enjoy a less distracted drive.
You also want to make sure a message from your mistress isn't announced when you're in the car with your wife...

meaning there is a setting that just reads any incoming message without tapping anything? where is that setting?

anyway, that's no good either, if i'm in the car with the family i don't want the car reading texts from my foul-mouthed friends.

basically i just want to hear a sound that alerts me to an incoming message. it would be nice if they put in an "override mute button" setting for the car.
Top right corner of the messages app. It literally says Announce 🔔 so you can toggle it on and off while driving. I believe there is a setting in CarPlay’s settings as well (as opposed to the iOS CarPlay settings). Not near my car now to look. It’s hooked into the iOS Siri announce settings so you do have control over where it’s announced to (car, headphones, etc)

Here’s a good site that has more info.

Ok... So if you don't pay for Apple Music you can't use SharePlay?.. That's kinda dumb.

Also, with all these wonderful updates, they still can't make an incoming phone call NOT take over the entire interface covering up your map?.. I remember years ago when they solved this for the iPhone, wonder how long it will take for CarPlay...
This is done deliberately for attention reasons.

CarPlay at the OEM level is desperately needed aka the New CarPlay Experience. I don’t want google dominating that field and they have a major head start with Android Automotive.
That will never happen outside of an Apple Car. Android Automotive is an Operating System, Apple does not bother their platforms teams with having to develop an OS that works on other hardware. Frankly, this is the perfect place for Android to exist, replacing awful proprietary auto manufacturer systems.

Microsoft got into this game decades ago with Sync, head starts don't mean much if you don't do it right.

Really? So covering a map you may be following is being done for attention reasons?..
Someone like yourself could handle multiple interfaces at once, an old person could easily become confused. I don't like it either, much like I don't like my car not defaulting to a 360 degree view when I back up...but safety regulations force it to use the single backup camera instead. If only these regulations were so stringently applied to "Full Self Driving", people might live.

I mean, I'm not sure how much old people really use CarPlay, but I think they would just as easily get confused by where the F the map went and might start tapping on the screen/getting distracted.

The 360 issue has nothing to do with CarPlay. I get where you'd want that. My car has a split — showing both, but again — that's the manufacturer, not Apple.

maybe once the switch becomes an "action button" as is rumored for the next iPhone this will change.

i already have back tap set to bring up the camera but i think you can do one, two or 3 taps with different actions? don't remember.

i don't know about you but i don't watch the center screen while i'm driving. i watch the road. need some other indication that a message has arrived.
It depends on the car, but my Mazda's screen is closer to the center of my view than the lane to right of me is. I'm not actively watching the screen either, but if I can't notice movement that close to my main view, it's not even in the peripheral, I'm an unsafe driver.

I haven't tried but I wonder if you can route the pings through CarPlay.

What’s going on with the backgrounds in Apple Music? Almost every album art is just displaying an ugly shade of brown.

Before I left for my trip, I was trying to find a way to bring Car Play back to my 2017 Honda Accord. I found out it wasn't really possible because of the way Honda designed it. I really hate that I bought a car for Car Play features and it stopped working after 3 years. Now it's the only thing I regret about buying the Honda and not the Subauru Legacy.

Are you sure you cant replace the head unit with a CarPlay complaint one?
