I wouldn’t mind something like the car mount for use in the home. Basically just a plug that you could attach the phone to.

Still trying to get an answer from Belkin to see if their charging stand will ruin cases like the Apple MagSafe charger does.

Which also begs the question, why didn’t MR put that into their “caveats” for the Apple MagSafe charger??

Frankly I'm kinda "meh" over MagSafe at this point.

I'm not entirely sure just what problem the system is supposed to solve?
I kind of agree. The benefit of "wireless" charging was the convenience to set the phone down and pick it up without having to fuss with a cord or anything. The MagSafe charger requires force to be removed which isn't much different than just pulling the lighting cable out from the bottom.

I went ahead and ordered this transparent case for my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm going to get the Pacific Blue. It's supposed to be thin enough to still work with MagSafe, but be a little more protective than their even thinner opaque cases. I feel like with the enhanced durability, a thinner case is a good trade off. Hopefully it works out well, but even so I'm not really expecting to use MagSafe. I think I'll buy a MagSafe charger for my wife's iPhone 12 Mini since she doesn't have a wireless charger coming from the first-gen SE, but I'm content to plop my iPhone down on my Belkin charging station that can charge my iPhone, Watch and AirPods Pro at the same time. If I need to do a quick charge, which is hardly ever during the pandemic, I've got a lightning cable I can plug in.

That 3-in-1 is speaking my language, but I'm not paying $150 for a Belkin anything. Hopefully the mysterious Apple Duo is under that price point, but I'd be surprised if that was the case.

The sleeve reminds me of the days when Blackberry was huge and their sleeves and holsters were everywhere

Apple's seems too bulky to be useful but that's just me, I prefer a slim profile

Which is what I've been doing for years - and thus perhaps my less than wide-eyed view of this Magsafe puck. :)

I would really watch out for the cable of the disc charger. It looks as it's made the same way as the charging cables from Apple, which breaks easily. They really should put some R&D on strengthening the cable.

It also allows apple to sell a more expensive charger and allows them to, in the future, make a port less phone. That's probably more of the goal.

I went ahead and cancelled my MagSafe order. I was really bummed to see reports of it leaving rings in the silicone cases and potential scratches on the back of the phone itself without a case. I'm just waiting on the leather case now.

The problem will be next year... when iPhones have no ports at all. And this certainly doesn’t solve all the problems that will generate.

The problem is pesky regulators will eventually force everyone to abide by the same charging plug standard, and Apple wants to maintain a proprietary standard to generate licensing revenue (MFI program). If/when those regulators require all charging ports to be USB-C, Apple will just get rid of the port altogether and rely exclusively on their proprietary portless solution MagSafe.

It’s solving the problem of replacing the Lightning cable. Instead of switching to USB-C, I could see Apple having no charging port at all on future iPhones and just using the MagSafe charger.

Yes, that may be the path Apple chooses if/when they end up dropping the Lightning port. They could take an Apple Watch approach and retain a service port of some sort for technicians to use while pushing consumers fully wireless. Though they could also do the same thing currently with Qi, albeit at 7.5W charging.

That however is a potential future problem and thus not one I'm currently experiencing. :p

Serious question though - when I looked at the EU commission documents (rather than news article) earlier this year, I saw reference only to standardizing chargers -- which I interpret as power adapters -- and not device charging ports. Anyone have primary documents mentioning device charging ports? I've seen the news reports talking about device ports, but suspect those authors may have misunderstood. Thus my curiosity at the difference between the primary docs I've seen and the other reports.

I'm tempted by the wallet since it would mean I'd only have to bring my keys and phone when I go out. Though I'm curious how it looks in real life and not online renders.

You are correct, the current requirements only impose standardized chargers. Last time when they imposed microUSB on everyone, neither consumers nor OEMs were happy with it, so they're being more careful this time with regard to actual device-side ports.

You mean like any of the myriad existing Qi pads or stands currently on the market? :p
I mean I haven’t looked into this before so I’m not sure what’s out there, I’ve always used a wired charger. I’d love such a charger that would literally clip the iPhone to a wall as easy at that!

I was hoping we’d at least be getting announcements about some battery cases by now.

Thanks -- I'd be against forcing device-ports on manufacturers, but have no qualms about a move towards power adapter port standardization.

I don't know about wall-mount stuff but I placed Anker Qi pads at my kitchen side-counter chargepoint and bedroom nightstand or dresser, and stands at my work desk (home office and office-building office). I very seldom ever actually plug in my iphone. I also seldom find myself low on battery and needing to charge any faster than Qi already achieves.

Oh, did a quick Amazon search and found this thing - looks like a neat setup for a kitchen counter / kitchen desk setup where the outlet is above the counter.
