I kind of agree. The benefit of "wireless" charging was the convenience to set the phone down and pick it up without having to fuss with a cord or anything. The MagSafe charger requires force to be removed which isn't much different than just pulling the lighting cable out from the bottom.Frankly I'm kinda "meh" over MagSafe at this point.
I'm not entirely sure just what problem the system is supposed to solve?
The problem will be next year... when iPhones have no ports at all. And this certainly doesn’t solve all the problems that will generate.Frankly I'm kinda "meh" over MagSafe at this point.

I wouldn’t mind something like the car mount for use in the home. Basically just a plug that you could attach the phone to.
Which is what I've been doing for years - and thus perhaps my less than wide-eyed view of this Magsafe puck.I kind of agree. It also allows apple to sell a more expensive charger and allows them to, in the future, make a port less phone. That's probably more of the goal.I kind of agree. The problem is pesky regulators will eventually force everyone to abide by the same charging plug standard, and Apple wants to maintain a proprietary standard to generate licensing revenue (MFI program). If/when those regulators require all charging ports to be USB-C, Apple will just get rid of the port altogether and rely exclusively on their proprietary portless solution MagSafe.
It’s solving the problem of replacing the Lightning cable. Instead of switching to USB-C, I could see Apple having no charging port at all on future iPhones and just using the MagSafe charger.
You are correct, the current requirements only impose standardized chargers. Last time when they imposed microUSB on everyone, neither consumers nor OEMs were happy with it, so they're being more careful this time with regard to actual device-side ports.Serious question though - when I looked at the EU commission documents (rather than news article) earlier this year, I saw reference only to standardizing chargers -- which I interpret as power adapters -- and not device charging ports. Anyone have primary documents mentioning device charging ports? I've seen the news reports talking about device ports, but suspect those authors may have misunderstood. Thus my curiosity at the difference between the primary docs I've seen and the other reports.
I mean I haven’t looked into this before so I’m not sure what’s out there, I’ve always used a wired charger. I’d love such a charger that would literally clip the iPhone to a wall as easy at that! You mean like any of the myriad existing Qi pads or stands currently on the market?![]()
Thanks -- I'd be against forcing device-ports on manufacturers, but have no qualms about a move towards power adapter port standardization. You are correct, the current requirements only impose standardized chargers. I agree. However, I do see potential there for the future.Frankly I'm kinda "meh" over MagSafe at this point.

Oh, it's definitely in your lifestyle if you're here talking about it.Apple...the lifestyle company. Maybe somebody's but not mine.
