While wireless charging isn't a huge deal, I am kind of excited to see what kind of charging dock they come up with to go with the phone. I wonder if that will be a separate purchase and the phone will just come with a lightning cable, or will we get a dock of some sort in the box...
If it's long range, a "dock" won't be needed

And it'll be yet another one of those gimmicks AND not an industry standard because we all know Apple doesn't like those. Say bye-bye to your Qi chargers, hello Apple-exclusives.
Long range charging will be superior to Qi charging anyways. Won't even need a pad to charge it.

I would rather not pay 1000£$ for the phone and stick to using my lead. I'm sure along with this added premium, we'll still have to ditch all the expensive apple leads and buy even more expensive charging mats.

Really? you are going there? "You're unplugging (plugging) it wrong"
Ha ha ha!! Yup, going there!!!:D Because it's true. If you regularly pull your cable out of your device at any x, y, or z angle/vector other than 180, 0, 0, relative to the charging port, and especially if you are pulling it out by grabbing the cable section and not the connector itself, premature damage will be caused.

The only Apple original Lightning cables I've ever had problems with were those chewed on by my kids when they were toddlers! ;)

Wired whatever is better than wireless, whenever possible. Wireless charging is a waste of energy and aggression to planet Earth.

I've recently converted back to Apple after being on Android for several years. Wireless charging is gimmicky and not as useful as you think. The one battery related thing I miss from Android is fast charging. Really hope Apple implements something similar. Going from dead phone to 70% in 20 mins is more important than being able to charge without having to through the huge inconvenience of plugging in a cable. 20 mins on a wireless charger will give you about 5-10%. Wireless charging is incredibly slow. Only useful for when charging overnight. Even then, your phone isn't on the charger just right and you wake up to a dead phone.
Fast wireless charging exists nowadays. Your phone obviously didn't have it.

On a Fast Wireless charger, our Galaxy S7 charged from 9% to 100% in just over two hours, cutting the total charge time in half. A quick look at power input through Ampere confirmed that Fast Wireless Charging was delivering almost exactly twice the amount of energy to the phone. This isn't quite as fast as a rapid charger, which will take this same Galaxy S7 from 9% to 100% in 90 minutes, but it's still pretty great when compared to the alternative.

I find it more convenient to have a device that I can still use without being stuck to a charging pad. Was it a magnetically attached inductive charger?
No, it wasn't, it was more convenient to me to just set the thing on a pad than plugging a cable in though.

I disagree. It's not a gimmick. Plugging in devices is one of life's tiny annoyances. Good riddance. Being able to just plop your device on a pad is quicker and more natural.
And it'll save you a whole 2 seconds. Good riddance. But it'll cost you $100 more because Apple.

I would pay $999 for a device that has many of these features:
  • 5" display using a newer display tech that still reproduces colors accurately
  • Minimal bezels so it's not bigger than the 4.7" 6/6s/7, and maybe even shorter
  • Dual cameras
  • Wireless charging
  • Two day battery life
  • That rumored 3D depth sensing module - perhaps for better portrait mode or facial recognition?
  • New casing materials
  • 3/4GB RAM
  • Better 3D Touch/Taptic engine
  • TouchID built into the display
  • Improved low-light camera
  • 60fps 4K
  • 30fps live photos
  • >= 480fps slow-mo (Sony's latest mobile imaging modules can handle 1080p at 960fps)
  • 256GB storage
  • USB 3.0 over lightning like the iPad Pro for fast camera transfers (if it even has a port aside from diagnostic, lol)
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Better balanced stereo audio—on my 7 the earpiece volume is noticeably lower than the one on the bottom, which somewhat reduces the stereo affect
  • OIS on the telephoto lens
I could see this being a third tier "special edition" device if Apple removes most of the buttons. First of all, many people might not be ready to go completely button-less. Second of all, it might be difficult for Apple to scale up if they go button-less, as having Touch ID built into the display could prove to be an issue at scale as it's a pretty radical design change and I think I read some rumors that there have been some issues with manufacturing involving that part.

I will keep my iPhone 6 Plus (and be HAPPY) if all they did was update the iOS so it doesn't just have individual apps to be selected on each screen. That style of iOS has been used since the original, 10 years ago!

People in here said it. It's small feature push out after small feature push out. iOS 11 needs to be a compete refresh, not just a color scheme and font change.

This rumored Microsoft Surface Phone is looking more and more appealing.

While the fingerprint sensor is shown on the left corner, I think it would be better to have it in the middle and have the icons get out of the way when the sensor is needed.
On the phone the dock has four icons. Add a fifth in the middle for the permanent home button, and let the dock, if it isn't already there, pop up along with the control panel on an up swipe - or include a Home button on the panel itself as a fifth icon in the bottom row.

The only reason I want wireless charging is to stop people complaining about the lack of wireless charging...

Unless it is true wireless charging (not needing a mat to rest the device on whilst it charges) all wireless charging brings is the need for multiple charging mats that are wired to a power outlet.

Man, if it's the latter, I can't wait to not be able to pick up my device while it charges. Woo!

I genuinely don't get the appeal of inductive charging.

I prefer inductive charging over long range and over plugging in. The downside of long range is that it's inefficient (for now), and plugging in requires two hands and visibility. With inductive charging I can plop my phone on my nightstand in the dark and it charges. I can reach over in the middle of the night with one hand, pick it up to use it, and plop it back on the night stand without looking and without groping around for the cable. I can place it on my car dock, again in the dark with one hand, and it charges. I can quickly grab it with one hand when leaving the car. Etc. It's a very small but very repetitive action that is sometimes a nonissue but can sometimes be a major annoyance. But either way it is repetitive so if it can be removed without any real downsides then why not? As for charging while using the phone in hand (which is necessary in cases like while waiting at the airport), or even just charging on the go, a cable with an inductive charger at the end should do the job. And portable chargers can also of course use inductive charging.
Inductive to me seems the way to go and I'm looking forward to it. Depending on how appealing/invisible they make the charging mat, I might put them on other pieces of furniture throughout the house which would make charging even less of a thing to think about.

Edit- Just had a thought. True, inductive is not really wireless. But magnetic charging does have every common use advantage I can think of over an inserted plug. Until true wireless charging becomes efficient, I think going with inductive is a no brainer.

Well Apple will have to use standard technologies if it uses inductive technologies, considering cars have the pads built in now and I'm pretty sure they won't stick different charging systems in just for the iPhone.

The iPhone certainly is taking more and more of the features from the competition... the more useful ones that is.

I feel your pain pain but really people shouldn't need a science lesson to use something because you know "It just works"

What's the advantage being wireless overnight as opposed to plugged in if you're in bed and asleep?
Is not it clear? You don't need to connect the wires. And it's not only over night and not only at home. For example, BMW cars have wireless charger. You just put your phone on it and the phone is charged.

This. Flush camera and fill out the space with a bigger battery.

Yes but if you start to get into having a bigger battery then there will always be people wanting bigger, bigger, bigger. I had this argument with many people complaining about the iPhone 5s and it's battery life. They all complained that it was impossible to get the claimed battery life on it so I tested it and proved them all wrong. I would argue now the same point I did then..people who complain about poor battery life tend to have EVERY feature turned on and also tend to be glued to their iPhone.
Like driving a car at 150mph all the time and complaining that the car runs out of fuel quickly.
Then complaining that the fuel tank needs to be bigger.

Unless you can wireless charge the iPhone without having to place it on a charging device, I don't see the big attraction / selling point. On the other hand, if you could wirelessly connect to it in the same kind of manner you would a wifi network, that would be something to look forward to.
