Imagine if it's charged via WiFi. Or via cellular.
And imagine the ensuing health crisis. Neither of those technologies are powerful enough. You'd have to push an insane amount of power around, and that's very inefficient.

Apple is widely rumored to launch three new iPhones this year, and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now claims that all of them will feature wireless charging.

Kuo said wireless charging increases the internal temperature of smartphones, so he expects the rumored iPhone 8 with an OLED display and glass casing to have a new 3D Touch module with "additional graphite sheet lamination" in order to prevent the device from malfunctioning due to overheating.

An excerpt from Kuo's research note obtained by MacRumors:The new 3D Touch module could be up to $5 more expensive for Apple to procure per phone. While that is a minimal increase, it lends further credence to a report claiming the high-end iPhone 8 could cost upwards of $1,000 in the United States due to a significant redesign and the use of premium parts.

Kuo previously said Apple will switch to all-glass casing for next year's entire iPhone lineup, including the more iterative 4.7-inch iPhone 7s and 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus, in order to support wireless charging. It remains unclear if the wireless charging will be based on long-range or inductive technologies.

So your saying that I cannot pick up my phone while it is charging? Are we going backwards or something? Wireless charging is a useless feature since you still need connect the damn pad to some power port. I don't see innovation here.

I rather have Apple invest in solar charging than this gimmick.

A lot of posts so not sure if anyone brought it up yet but wireless charging on the iPhone possibly(probably)means the death of the lightning port.

Hmm... old iPhone starts at $650.

R&D Dept: "Well, if we include wireless charging, the phone is more susceptible to heat. We can add some extra shielding for about $5."

Tim Cook: "Well... ok. Just be sure to raise the retail price of the phone by $350!"

well how else are you supposed to make up those extra $5 while keeping your cash reserves in the hundreds of billions.

And i most certainly looking forward to this day.
Why? What ever wireless charging solution Apple uses the thing that charges your iPhone plugs into a port somewhere. Whats the difference between (1) iPhone plugs into mains supply (2) iPhone wirelessly charges via "device" that plugs into mains supply?

Honestly, I would rather they dump wireless charging, and make the phone thick enough to accommodate a flush camera lens and bring back the headphone jack. If they did that, it would be a day one purchase, but it is wishful thinking. Wireless charging is inefficient, and causes the heat issues. I have never had any issues with any of my lightning cables, and don't have a problem just plugging it in. I usually charge it on my nightstand while I sleep and start my day with 100% battery every day. 99% of my days I make it back to the charger without issue.

Nobody wants a brick in their pocket. Apple is correctly making devices smaller. I have no problem with adding a headphone jack or charge port but I don't care either way.

....who said anything about a pad? Why does everyone think a ****ing pad is how you do wireless charging?

Also, a solar panel would have to be bigger than the damn phone to charge it in any reasonable about of time.

So much negativity for wireless charging surprises me. If they have worked out the kinks and the batteries / factories storing them don't explode then I'm all for it. Every iPhone I've had has always ended up with a slightly dodgy port by the end.

I really dislike how Apple is left and right justifying the time and date. It should be positioned in the middle. There's no merit in the current presentation imo.

Distance.

Maybe!

If wireless charging can extend the distance from device to charging pad/block/whatever (as rumoured), so that the device(iPhone) can charge at several inches, feet or maybe further, then it's a huge game-changer.

Imagine your iPhone charging just by being in the same room as your charger!!

Yup, perhaps fantasy at the moment, but every technology we currently take for granted was fantasy at some point!!

:)

At least now the lighting charger cord can last longer with less use. Finally, Apple has joined the club.

You'll never know until you have experienced it. Been using wireless charging on Samsung phones for awhile now, and it's a great experience to just put the phone on a pad or stand up dock and take if off without the need to unplug anything.

The convenience is equivalent to keeping your car key fob in your pocket and using push to start. Not a big deal, until you actually get have it.

As opposed to every non-removable battery dying by the end.

I'm sure during testing and planning they thought of that

Since that seems to be the #1 concern among members here, I imagine that question was asked at least once throughout the engineering process

Would be kind of self defeating with Apple's whole health focus/movement if the wireless charging makes you grow a third arm right?!

LOL best reply so far; at last a realist!

How is KGI right so many times? Are they straight up just predicting?

Here’s how. They look at industry news regarding Apple’s parts or materials suppliers. They look at investor reports to see what the suppliers are planning for their future business strategies. They may even tap into the knowledge of employees at those suppliers. Based on what materials and tooling suppliers order or invest in, One can guess as to what they are making for their customers.

This is going to be at least semi-distance charging.

Imagine just being able to place your phone, watch, airpods, anything Apple on your bedside table and they just start charging. Imagine never needing to charge your Apple Pencil or Magic Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad ever.

Even if you can't charge at a long distance, being able to charge within a few square foot area is still a real improvement over charging mats.

Personally I don't really care about wireless charging unless Apple gets it to where wireless charging charges my phone just as fast as charging it with lightening cable and the internal heat doesn't cook the inside of the phone. Once Apple perfects that then I will be into wireless charging but til then I am happy using a lightening cable.
