Hrm.. what happens when you want to hold it in portrait mode without smudging fingers on the screen and/or preventing intended gestures? The narrower rims work on the iPad mini because you hold the back of it with one hand, but that doesn't work with the full-sized iPad unless you have very big paws..

I suspect that THIS is the real reason for the fingerprint tech, not some fancy new home button trick. Detect the difference between a tap etc and a grip. Have palm rest as well hopefully

Nice, this is what I've been wanting. If there are this many parts leaking out, it will probably debut sooner rather than later. iPad 3 was released in April....

iPad 4 was in October. Combine this with the mega sized in Feb, which could have been a 'one more thing' if there was a launch this soon and it spells a fall release being more likely. Post WWDC and the release of iOS 7 with perhaps a fancy new touch detection to avoid false hits that would be needed on a device of this design.

It's far from perfect. And only works around the bezel. Which is why the fingerprint tech they bought could be needed

We should go to a format that has the Front Page, Page 2 and then Digitimes - in that order. They're a joke. Gruber and some of the supply analysts at least have a record better than aggregated every rumor and averaging it.

Page One for big company wide type issues and major events. Mac. iOS, Legal, BS (to cover analysts, digitimes etc)

I was thinking of upgrading my iPad 3, not so sure now.

For me, it all comes down to what new features this iPad will have, and how it will make the most of ios7 (compared to my ipad 3). No way would I be prepared to upgrade for a spec bump and slightly thinner bezel.

I don't hold my iPad anyway (using a Logitech Keyboard case with it), so weight is not an issue.

They used new battery technology in the Mini, which is why they managed to get it so thin.

If you check the specs they are both using lithium-polymer batteries. The watt hour difference could be due to nothing more than the physical size. Bigger battery, bigger output.

And the battery being thinner in the mini could be due to the lack of a retina display which lowers the power needs and thus they just don't need as fat/large of a battery.

----------

I can see it now... "We've taken what we've learned from the RMBP and the magical new iMac and put it into the iPad. The New New iPad now features a thinner laminated screen process that allows for over 40% better color saturation and better viewing angles."-Tim

If it also means that I can see it better outside, good

----------

Next redesign they'll remove the home button.

Perhaps. They could make it a software thing. Have detection points in the bezel. Map things like screenshots and hard resets to the volume buttons like on the iPod nano. Wanna take a screenshot you press in both volume buttons at the same time. Need to hard boot, DFU mode it could be some combo like deactivating mute mode then holding down power and both volumes together etc.

I actually prefer a little more bezel than the iPad mini. That "ignore finger press" tech doesn't work perfectly especially in Safari where things get detected as a long press and you get options. This size bezel looks more usable.

As the panel and digitizer aren't fused into one, does this rule out igzo technology for a thinner LCD panel?

This site has been extremely lack luster for a while now. Just stupid leaked photos of the front panel of the next product with some breaking bad hand wearing a protective glove to make it look like it's being assembled in Area 51. Looks JUST like the other ipads. Oh the bezel is smaller. Who cares.

Other posts include how many people use ipads and iphones. Let us not forget the depressing posts about how bad Apple's stock is falling. And the cherry on top goes to the endless amount of lawsuits Apple are involved in.

This is coming from a guy who owns an iphone, ipod, brand new imac 27" fully loaded and several imacs before that. I like apple, I do. It's just Apple as a whole has been pretty underwhelming for quite some time and there's really nothing interesting to report anymore.

I want one of these thin-bezel iPad 5, but if Apple comes out with a "iPad 5S" in the fall with fingerprint sensors and NFC, I will be cross. I may even stamp my feet.

I wish we knew whether Apple is on a yearly or six-month cycle on the iPad. Was the iPad 4 just a blip?

Perhaps I should wait to buy the iPad 5 until after the iPhone 5S comes out. Then I'll know what improvements the iPad 5S will get. ;)

PS: Yes, I want fingerprint tech on the iPad for the same reason I want it on the iPhone: Security. And NFC on the iPad for the same reason Square makes a Square Register app.

Then why are you on MacRumors? What exactly are you expecting?

Odd how those renderings are almost always accurate. Even for the iPhone 5 before its debut...

I agree with Mikeoley. Macrumors is boring now. It's utterly predictable, a reflection of Apple's product lineup.

I'd rather have numerous deliberately false, fun, and crazy rumors, than an accurate, boring, 1-iphone/iPad/iMac per year update.

I wonder if the resizing in the bezels means I can throw my $80 smart cover in the garbage...

So far Apple has not figured out how to resize the bezel of existing iPads. If they enable such a feature in iOS 7, there will probably be a way to switch it off.

Looking forward to putting the lightest thinnest ipad ever into a chunky otterbox case :p
