This might be a silly question given Apple's track record, but do you suppose there is a chance that TouchID would be an optional function on the new iPad? I feel like that would be a great way to offer a price break for those who don't want this feature like myself.

I know it's a great security feature and all, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am giving up my finger print to a company so high on the NSA's priority list. Even if it is just stored as data, if anyone can access it, it's probably them...

TouchID is perfectly safe. As Apple have explained multiple times, the device stores the data as highly encrypted unreadable information which not even Apple themselves can read - the same as all your iMessages e.t.c. Furthermore, Apple also said that the device doesn't even take an image of your fingerprint...the information it stores doesn't even look like a fingerprint and can't even be used as one. TouchID works on the data which tells it that the finger is yours such as the bumps and ridges in your finger print and where they are in relation to each other (mathematical data). Your fingerprint is not saved as a whole, you're perfectly fine. The NSA or whatever you're bothered about CANNOT get hold of your fingerprint, Apple don't even HAVE your fingerprint.

Finally, after ALL of that, the data is stored on a chip within the specific device unit which is inaccessible to anyone or anything and is never uploaded to anywhere. I'm not even sure the phone can access the information inside that chip (other than the TouchID unit itself).

Ps. Why are you so bothered about 'organisations' having your fingerprint? Unless you're planning to commit a serious crime any time soon whereby they'd need to track you down, a fingerprint is useless information. So I guess, don't do crimes?

Well here we go. I knew I'd regret plunking down $700 last year, only to be disappointed when the next iteration gets Touch ID and better specs. Should have waited? ...Never ending question with this company. Love my current Air though.

I love my iPad air but it has that hollow gap you can both see and hear when you tap the screen. Makes it feel cheap.

Please stop with the thinner/lighter. My Air cracked after no obvious trauma - it's massively more fragile than other iOS devices.

#1 He is a problem for us
#2 Go into NSA database, get finger print
#3 Plant it at crime site
#4 hey FBI, want to lookup that finger print in our database?

You think STASI didn't use their archive against people?

Wow an even slimmer iPad Air !?
Maybe they are making room for additional ram

----------

Make thinner display, bigger battery. The same overall thickness as the current air, I would be happy.

I don't have any complaint about iPad battery

----------

And hopefully gone will be the days of dust under the glass.

I've yet to see one ....

----------

how about those innovative incremental updates ... ZzzzZzzZzzZzz

Would you like to have an oval tablet ? Or you just wanna buy the same iPad for three years unlike something new will come ?
Incremental updates at the same price are more than welcomed

It is just a thinner glass ... Nothing cheap

I haven't seen this since I had a 1st gen iPod Touch.

Back when Cube Runner felt amazing because of the accelerometer...ahh I didn't expect I'd feel nostalgic already.

Instead of opsessing with thinness Apple should try to add functionalities to iPad. I have a 3rd gen and don't have much reason to upgrade.
Having a laminated display is not about thinness - it's about significantly reducing reflections/glare on the display. Compared to the iPad, the Surface tablets have much lower reflections, and this is the main reason.

That third reflection is due to the gap between the glass and the display panel.
It also reduces contrast in bright light conditions due to glare.

2GB RAM and I buy.
Air 1 crashes apps way too much.
I wonder if this is actually a problem with the apps you're using. I haven't had a single app crash on my Air so far.

That said, Safari is constantly reloading tabs, so more RAM would be welcome.

Just one hour of usage and the difference in weight could give you plenty of reasons to upgrade

Wow...today only I was contemplating on whether to get apple care for my ipad 4 or upgrade to iPad Air.

Now I will wait for iPad Air 2 :D

Just enjoy what you have or sell it just before the new one is released and get a new one. You should be able to sell your Air for 80-90% of what you paid for it (assuming it's free from obvious damage or wear) and get a new one. There are a number of people who buy and sell iPads every year with an upgrade cost of about $100 per year after resale.

Just make the iPad Mini with Retina 2 not suck as much as version 1.

And be sure theirs TouchID.

Thank you for the feedback! That was genuinely informative. :) As far as committing crimes go, I don't plan on it of course. The problem lies in the language of the Patriot Act. The guidelines to what they can consider part of a terror investigation are very loose. If there is even a slight chance that anything I access on the internet warrants a closer look at my data I'm certainly not about to gift wrap it for them! My money will go to what I feel to be the safest option. If I'm forced to have a Touch ID just for a few other incremental hardware updates, I would be just as happy with the current gen. It will probably be cheaper by that time anyway!

I'm not trying to be a troll, so forgive me. I think I would just like to err on the side of caution here. I want to believe what you and others say, but my gut tells me where there is data, there is a way to access it with the proper resources. Something about a Patriot Act and a HUGE data center tells me the US Government just might have these resources! It's not Apple I don't trust. It's the jackasses with the "court orders"

If you are worried about this; then your fingerprint should be the least of your concerns.
Just stop using network connected computing / communication devices of any, and every kind, right now.
Also, if you think the threats you are concerned with start and stop with (as you say) the "US" government, then you are a tool.

PS,
Unless you are wearing gloves at all times, everywhere you go, the "government" can get your fingerprints any time they wish.

I think it's funny that you can see the photographer, er, iPhoneographer, reflected in the screen and the legs of one of his co-workers in the background. Leakers used to be careful about creating neutral backgrounds, protecting their identities, etc.

Agree. And there's no Early Termination Fee hassle as with iPhones (and most other smartphones).

No one thinks you're trolling, but your concern is misplaced. While you are correct that a court order plus sufficient technical resources in theory would allow someone to extract data that exists, that is not a concern here for two reasons. First, the data is not transmitted off the device, so the government would have to have actual possession of the device to have any chance of extracting the data. Second, if the government (or anyone else) wants your fingerprints, they have far easier ways of getting them, by simply lifting them from smooth, non-porous objects you touch in daily life. These include, among other things, cell phones, which likely have some of your prints whether or not they have Touch ID capability.

I never said it started or stopped there, but they certainly are a threat don't you think? This tool sure seems to think so. Assuming ALL of your data is secure is ignorant, no doubt, but if there is a way I can prevent even one piece of information getting into their hands I'm certainly going to do it.
