of course... this will be like the original ipad, and then they'll slide some slightly better model in to upsell to customers. it will be like ipad air: better than the original ipad, but less expensive than the pro.

Honestly... what on earth would a Phone need anymore?
Sometimes, these yearly updates, are so forced.

I have an 11 Pro Max - does everything I need it to do - It's a phone.
Will probably update to 14 (not sure yet) or the next 15, as long as it works there's no reason to spend money.

I bet most of the people use the phone to talk, do social media and take pictures most of the time.
Of course there are those doing professional videos but even to this day, most of the consumers of those videos barely have a high resolution screen.

Wasn't it that Apple said the device shouldn't stand in the way of the user?- what more tech specs one needs in this context besides small tweaks.....

You dont have to buy them yearly though. Without a yearly cadence you wont have the iterative improvement and process that is driving the "whole" technology industry. That is everything from Silicon Foundry, IPs, Network, Sensors etc.

For probably 90% of people we have hit the plateau a few years ago. But 5G was enough as a push that will last another 3 to 4 years. A billion iPhone user upgrading at 200M iPhone per year will still take 5 years at minimum. Just enough time for the network to move everything to 5G while turning off 2G and 3G.

The final improvement will probably be battery. Which should come to the market by 2025 ish. And then it is sort of beyond my imagination what is after that. It will just end up where iPhone like Laptops and PCs with average replacement cycle of 4 to 5 years. Which is still not a bad business to be in.

This is 100% what I expect the new iPhone's to look like this year, no way will it be the pill shape. I even said that in Feb.
I think we could see changes to the 14 Pro models, however, for anyone with a 13/13 Pro, especially the 13 Pro, the 14 Pro is looking to be quite the small update. And people said the 13 Pro was just an S year over the 12 Pro. Turns out, it was quite the big upgrade. ProMOTION, smaller notch, much better battery, big camera upgrade, ProRes. I don’t think the 14 Pro is going to offer much other than a possible redesign to the notch, which looks even worse in my opinion.

What everyone has to remember is any phone company don’t release phones every year because they want you to upgrade to it every single year.

They launch new phones every year so anyone in market for a new phone gets the latest tech available, yeah we could argue that technically they didn’t need to release the iPhone 12 line or the iPhone 13, and now essentially the 14 isn’t much different, but imagine having an iPhone 8, iPhone X or XR and you decide to upgrade it later this year and the best available from Apple is the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro lines which have 2 year old tech in them… it would just feel a bit of a dated device almost immediately.

I am not sure they would get away with keeping the same processor and the same design, would need to be one or the other. I am not seeing the appeal of the normal 14 at all, compared to the 13, at this point.

Exactly. A 14 with the same design and same chip? What are they going to market? Just the budget Max size?
That's why I think Kuo's tweets are just soggy tea leaves and nothing more.

I agree.

I do the same upgrade cycle - phones is usually 4 years as I rather replace it with a new one vs replacing the battery for 1 more year.
Battery technology needs to advance and have a radical shift - not just in mobile devices but in general. It's not sustainable and it's underwhelming in terms of performance.

Imagine the day when an iPhone will last like a Nokia did in the past... 5 days.
With these M chips and low consumption even Macs and IPads would have insane autonomy for several days.
And cars should follow - as nobody wants to carry a ton of extra weight for a barely recyclable battery with the scarce Lithium availability on the planet.

Yeah... I went overboard and started dreaming with my eyes open :)

I can’t think of any feasible important improvement to the current iPhone design. Of course, a flush design would be ideally great, but since with current technology (unless there’s an unexpected surprise) that means creating a giant brick of 14mm, that has a ~0% probability.

Look at the side of the phone ffs, it clearly is a new design based off the iPhone 4.

It has the iPhone 13 Pro smaller notch and it’s a massive change compared to the 12 to 13 upgrade.

Its obvious the 14 Pro will get the pill and hole punch so whoever still thinks it’ll be the same as 13 is deluded.

It almost sounds like a 13S.
I was going to complain, but then your comment brought me back down to earth.

13s is right! They shouldn’t call it 14. And I completely forgot about S series having no design changes, and it totally is in line with Apple release history to have repeating external design.

Sooooo now the question is what is the upgrade for the 14, then?

So Apple’s 2022 iPhone strategy is upsell people to Pro who don’t need Pro, because their greed continues to hit new heights previously thought to be impossible.

Uninspiring. If Apple goes its usual route and discounts iPhone 13 once iPhone 14 are released, getting that discounted 13 might be a much better option for many people.

Well, my guess it’s the usual suspects: A16 (this is our fastest iPhone ever!), possibly more RAM (not that it matters much), perhaps ProMotion trickling down to a non-pro line and, maybe, some more camera tricks.
